Hello! I would suggest adding this video to the Tanares Adventures list. The game is awesome but also a bit overwhelming (specially the status tokens are messy), so this kind of videos are so helpful! Many youtubers prepare unboxing videos, but they do not seem to play the game at all afterwards. Also, you explain the game in a very clear English (it is not my mother tongue), and I really appreciate it too.

Thanks for the playthrough. This is definitely a step up in complexity from Arena but hopefully it looks to make combat and strategies more interesting. There's a whole bunch of things to track and remember but you did a great job of that. I'm a bit worried the skills and villain targeting leading to automatic reactions are unbalanced as you never looked close to failing and a couple of times villains killed themselves which felt odd. Would love to see more gameplay from you but appreciate we want to avoid spoilers. Thanks again.

So, one thing I didn't cover is what is called the Kemet Hunt. It is an evolving system of difficulty that awards bonus loot based on how efficiently you finish a quest. You "level" up (or level down) the hunt as you go, but each level puts you at more of a disadvantage at the start of/during the quest (i.e. start with one special attack spent). This system is meant to balance out the game as you go. So, in other words, the game rewards good tactical decisions and positioning for the situations I was in, while later balancing that with progressive restrictions. That being said, there is allowance in the rules for what is like a survivor exception for the villains, if you feel it is weird that they would "kill themselves" from reactions or otherwise. I don't have the rules in front of me, but in the targeting section, there is a highlighted variant that explains a "survivor" instinct. However, the scenario I played is really designed in the favor of the player and heroes. The quests following are more balanced, challenging, and possible to fail. They really put some excellent thought into the combat system and the implications of the targeting and movement system. It's fun, dynamic, and makes you feel like each turn matters. Thank you so much for watching!

when you say line of sight a person could argue that hes behind a character and to left there a wall.
@tabletopforone
@tabletopforone Жыл бұрын
Yes, that's true, but this game only accounts for walls and doors. On pages 19 and 20, the rulebook illustrates the rules on line of site. Draw an imaginary straight line from one corner of the attacker's square to one corner of the target's square. If that line doesn't touch a wall or door, then you have line of sight. "Obstacles, terrain, barricades, and combatants do not block vision." It's not very thematic or realistic, but those are the rules. Thanks so much for your comment and for watching!

Very didactic and well done playthrough. I appreciate to see the game before receiving it. Question (I don't have the game yet). Aren't you supposed to roll the dice when you perform a reaction attack?
@tabletopforone
@tabletopforone Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for the compliment. It really is encouraging. I had originally thought that regarding reaction attacks (perhaps that was originally in Arena), but on page 41 of the Tanares rulebook it says, "Reaction DMG is an effect, not an attack. It is dealt automatically and requires no roll against the inciting enemy's defense." I hope that helps. Thank you so much for watching!

Yes, there are quite a few. When I first dove into Tanares, I thought it would be an easy sidestep from Arena. But, I'm having to learn a new game practically, yet my experience with Arena still confuses my thoughts sometimes. 😆 however, Tanares Adventures is a better system I think, and I'll eventually have it all down. When you approach the game, just approach it as if you don't know anything. That might make it easier to learn.

So, on page 12 of the City Book, in red it says where the "Campaign Introduction ends." At this point, you'll have access to Adventures D & E (with A & B removed from the game). This is where the "true" campaign begins. Is there a particular reason you want to skip the Introduction? If you haven't played Tanares before (i.e. on Tabletop Simulator), then I very much recommend doing the tutorial quests. There are many changes and additions to the game since Arena The Contest. So, if you don't do the tutorials, it will be more difficult to learn everything you need to play. Just a suggestion. 😁 But, of course, play as you'd like. I do hope you enjoy it!

@tabletopforone
@tabletopforone Жыл бұрын
When determining los, if one corner of the square your character on can "see" one corner of the enemy, then los is achieved. In this case, the upper left corner of the character had los to the upper right corner of the enemy without going through the wall. I hope that helps! 🙂

At 30:45 would the reaver take damage from the spikes while moving on his turn? Killing him on his way to attack the healer ?
@tabletopforone
@tabletopforone Жыл бұрын
No, I originally thought that, but according to the designer (and the rules) he would not take spike damage here. He only takes it entering into the spikes. So, he would have had to exit and reenter to receive spike damage. Even then, the spike damage would hit first, then part of the bleed and part reaction, then rest bleed. Bleed is residual damage and cannot kill. If I'm wrong on any of that, let me know. Thanks for the great question!

Here's the quote from page 41 of the rulebook under Retaliation: "When you make an attack on your Prime Action, the first NOT-Fatigued villain you target must take the next turn." The example below that text also clarifies it further "Villain C is not fatigued, also. However, it was not the first not-Fatigued villain targeted by the attack....therefore, villain C will not retaliate (not even after villain B takes its turn). Does that help? I hope I still got that rule correct in the playthrough. I'll have to check later. Thanks so much for the question and for watching.

I have a question about blast: you played as it doesnt affect the combatant source of the effect, but where in the rule you find it clearly?
@tabletopforone
@tabletopforone Жыл бұрын
I'm not sure it is clear in the rulebook. In Appendix D, it says "Deal X damage to all enemies in 1 space of the target." I read that as referring to any hero except the target hero. Furthermore, I think of it logically. It's a blast attack, which its epicenter takes the most damage (the target from the initial hit) and then it radiates out to enemies within one space from the center of the blast. I could be wrong. I hope that helps.

I quit Arena after five sessions. So many things to keep track of and relay to the players. No visual aids (monster stat cards etc) so I had to constantly tell everyone the stats and all the special rules. Do you think Tanares Adventures would be an improvement for me? I do have it but I'm not even sure if I want to try it.
@tabletopforone
@tabletopforone Жыл бұрын
I don't know if Tanares would be a good fit for you then. In some ways there is more to track, but the payoff is far more rewarding. The combat is so greatly improved, but it is more complex. I have a few playthroughs on my channel to give you an idea.
@p0ck3tp3ar

@@tabletopforone Complexity of combat is not something I'm particularly worried about but I really dislike the troves of rules that vary from quest to quest. In particular: doors/chests/switches/unique room rules/unique room monster rules. I feel like it's difficult to remember all of it so I repeatedly have to look down at the book. I find it to be disrupting to the experience. Would you say Tanares would be worse for me in this regard given this additional info? Thank you.
@tabletopforone
@tabletopforone Жыл бұрын
It would probably be about the same. For instance, one scenario I played had a miniature move along a track based on how many enemies were on the map. Then where the miniature landed (on floor, spikes, switch, rune, or book) something would happen. It wouldn't be anything easily memorized, and I had to reference the rulebook at the end of every round. It was a clever timing mechanic, but it was less thematic in that case. I hope that helps.

I'd like to ask a rules question: Can Mobbed be combined with Focused? Taking a defense down 6 points?
@tabletopforone
@tabletopforone Жыл бұрын
No, it cannot in the base rules. Focus is for ranged attacks where no villain is within 3 spaces and you forfeit movement. Mob is for melee attacks where two heroes are adjacent to an enemy but nor to each other. Now, there are some attacks that give you focus automatically. So, I suppose that if your hero is mobbing a villain and uses a ranged attack with auto focus against that villain that you would then get +6 to your roll. However, you would then cite a reaction attack from that villain and suffer damage. I personally would think it's better in that moment to sidestep and attack to avoid reaction damage and still get +3 from the auto focus. Unless of course, you wanted to keep the villain mobbed for the other hero's turn who is part of that mob. I'll double check the rulebook to see if they can stack bonuses in that scenario.
@tabletopforone
@tabletopforone Жыл бұрын
Ok, so the wording is that mobbing causes the villain to be "exposed." Focus also causes a villain to be "exposed." Exposed is a "condition" that provides -3 defense against enemies. And according to page 26 under Conditions, conditions stack. So the end result of that scenario I mentioned is that the villain would have -6 defense against the ranged attacker for is mobbing and auto-focused. I erroneously said "+6 to the roll" instead of "-6 to defense," even though in most cases the outcome is the same mathematically. I hope that helps. Thanks for the great question!
