This is the type of unfolding of events that would be written into a comedy movie: Passenger seems timid but trying to fake enthusiasm. Then passenger sees that the chute opens (unaware that the chute is downplaning) and begins to cry out in genuine excitement. Simultaneously the instructor is starts to freak out knowing he has to cut away. Then the reserve is open above their heads and the instructor has to feign enthusiasm through the residual fear he's feeling.

Hey mate I have my first skydive with an instructor next week in Sydney and I am absolutely shitting myself. I can’t stop thinking about what happens if the parachutes fail. I am seriously considering cancelling my appointment. Any advice?
@TheLilstoker3 жыл бұрын
Awesome. Fear of falling is, one of only a few fears, humans are born with, don't worry it's only natural. As a skydiver a general stat is that we cutaway 1 in every 1000 jumps. So far I have had two cutaways in over 4000 jumps, everyone differs I generally jump where the gear is well maintained. The reserve parachute is packed by a qualified rigger. It gets repacked every six months and checked over very thoroughly. It is also made slightly different, primarily made for the best chance of opening and saving your life and therefore doesn't have the best in-flight characteristics. The main thing is it is different and designed to give you the best chance. Chances are extremely slim you will use it. From a psychological point of view. During your ride up to altitude, just remember we do this everyday, for a living, and are mostly very relaxed during all of it. The most nerve racking bit is when the door opens and when exiting the aircraft. Try remain calm, when in the plane take some long deep breaths. This really helps and is very simple to do ! After exiting the aircraft there will be a few seconds where you are still scared until you get slightly used to the feeling after which I'm sure you will feel ecstatic. 😀 during the freefall don't forget to breathe. If you have trouble make sure your chin is up so the wind isn't directly in your mouth and if you need to yell out a holy sshit or something along those lines which will push the air out your lungs andake you the your next breath haha. I really hope you don't cancel, you will be so proud of yourself for achieving it. I went into more detail than I needed too and I'm sure your instructor will help put your mind at ease. The only thing you need to remember is to try relax your body and breathe. Trust your instructor and most of all, have an epic time!!!

Can someone explain to me why he had him hold onto the straps? This is the second video I've seen where the instructor tells them to hold on tight, what's the reasoning?
@TheLilstoker3 жыл бұрын
in this intance i was asking him to hold the cutaway handle and the reserve handle.. its a good idea to keep these as you save a cost if you don't drop them. if you can communicate with them during a malfunction, holding on to the straps before cutting away is what you want your student to do, ideally you want them to arch their body as well.. It means when you cutaway and open the reserve it minimizes the risk of a poor body position during the reserve deployment.
@bbs54003 жыл бұрын
@@TheLilstoker Ooohhh okay, I went back to the other video I saw and they both ironically held onto the straps with the reserve handle in their hand immediately after XD that makes a lot more sense, thanks, I was a bit confused, you were telling him to hold onto and not let go of the the reserve handle, not specifically the straps, as you were already under the reserve when you told him that

From someone who has never skydived, i'm just wondering how scary it is for an experience diver to cut away? On a scale of 1 to 10? Must be pretty terrifying until you see the reserve open and stable.
@TheLilstoker3 жыл бұрын
i would say a 2 or 3.. reason for it being low is that we are trained for this situation. you have to be very aware of time passing and you are mostly distracted by trying to fix the situation rather than being scared of it. At the time it was my first cutaway and i hadn't done too many tandems - had been a tandem master for 6months. The other reason it is a 2 is because it didn't take long to realize i couldn't fix the situation before moving to plan b and cutting away.. In skydiving we have fast malfunctions and slow malfucnctions, fast malfunctions relate to still going near terminal velocity whilst dealing with a malfunction Or a slow malfunction where you have some fabric over your head. That said ,when the parachute is spinning, you can eat up altitude quickly. Scary factor increases a lot when you add other things into the mix, say you have pulled lower than intended, over a spot where you can't make it back to the landing area, you have decided to cutaway very late. and many other variables. which add problem on top of problem creating a worsening situation. :)
