This was originally released on the TD web site. If I recall correctly they had a special section on the web site where, for a subscription price, they would post rarities and occasionally Edgar would recount experiences. The Nick Mason mix of Stratosfear was one of the postings. I don’t think it was available for download but Cliff Proctor who I know is a long time TD fan has done a really good job in recording it for posterity. I remember hating this mix when I first heard it. So much so that I didn’t listen again until now. I guess I don’t hate it so much now but the TD mix is really a million times better IMHO. Glad they scrapped this mix.

Lots of magic moments gone in this mix. But interesting all the same. Tells you how much mastering and mixing engineers are pretty much co-arrangers.

I'm glad you compressed the tubular bell strike , it was too loud on the original by TD

I can see why TD disliked it and decided to mix it themselves. Its too conventional, lacking energy and the suspense just doesn't build to that orgasmic release.

Really interesting mix - in that the more overt beats here really seem to "structure" the solos (4:20-7:08). To be honest Edgar shouldn't have done the free form guitar thing after the solos we hear on the record: it seemed like it was just a placeholder solo and not a real one which meanders in spots, is real tentative in others and the out of tune over-bend was really ugly sounding (specifically from 7:09-7:55 ish) - but after this when we return to the quiet part - we're hearing other parts added in some spots like extra rhythm guitars, extra synth sounds, rhodes pianos, clean guitar, I'm sure glad I heard this - maybe in the future we'll hear some other remixes. Does anyone know when this was supposedly done?

My guess is that maybe this derives from an alternate mix from 1976, quite possibly Nick's, but that it's been further chopped about and overdubbed with drum machines three decades later. It very much reminds me of Tangram 2008, the way the material has been handled.

This is sure not their best work, and this is sure not the best mix of this work. Whoever mixed this brought this down to muzak.

who *actually* made this remix? come on , 'fess up.

Dunc I would posit that what we're hearing here is a 2000s edit/development of an alternate mix from 1976. Edgar wouldn't have had access to the multitracks to get at those bits of guitar that were mixed out of the original, otherwise we'd likely have had alternate mixes on ISOH, so my guess is that this is someone's (possibly Nick's but who can say) alternate mix that's been chopped about and had drum machine loops slapped over it. The way it's been handled just makes me think of Tangram 2008 and such.

I was party to some of the goings-on behind the ISOH set, & I know SW had virtually nothing by way of stems for any of it. lots of out-takey stuff, some stems, for the earlier albums, but 'stratosfear' was lost. possibly CF is sitting on it- he's known to have accumulated a bit of a library that he's keeping to himself. nothing of 'sorcerer' either, though that was missing from the set for other reasons.

Actually, it is. It was on TD's website for awhile back in the early to mid 2000s.

@@LouiePlaysDrumsdoesn't mean it's all from 1976. This has Tangentization written all over it, just as with Soundmill Navigator etc. Mostly just drum machine loops but still. Edgar couldn't resist contemporizing old stuff.

Drumming ...uninspired and ruins the whole track .TD did right in sticking with their own mix.

I would say the drumming was added around three decades later. This is very much in the manner of the Tangram 2008 release.

There's more than one Nick Mason in this world
@robertforman34947 ай бұрын
He actually did. You can read about it in Edgar’s autobiography.
@synoneiro6 ай бұрын
@@robertforman3494 I would take a fair amount of what Edgar wrote in his autobiography with a good pinch of salt. For a start, in the book he gets the chronology of members joining in the late 60s and early 70s hopelessly wrong. Sure, memories can become unreliable after several decades but more pertinently, elsewhere he's been known to spin a hefty yarn or few here and there (horse riding accident, Green Desert being from 1973, etc etc). I don't doubt that Nick Mason did have a go at mixing Stratosfear and maybe his unused mix did form the basis of what we're hearing here (extra passages of lead guitar which are clearly from 1976, etc). It was from around 1976 that TD started holding onto their multitrack tapes and these became unavailable to Edgar after Chris Franke left, so presumably the only way of getting hold of this alternate mixdown was via a backup copy. I say "basis" because the audio here has clearly been further edited, chopped about and overdubbed with contemporary drum machines much more recently, very much in the style of Tangram 2008. To call this hybrid work the "Nick Mason Mix" is somewhat misleading, but it isn't really any different from calling Livemiles a live recording (it's nothing of the sort, just a faux live album intended to fulfill a contract) and Soundmill Navigator a 1976 recording (when it's clearly an audience recording overdubbed with digital synths from two decades later).

@@synoneiro Because it was only released for a very brief time on the “fan club” portion of the web site it never occurred to me that it was a remix of the Nick Mason mix, but you could be right. As a long time fan of TD I’m well aware that the tings Edgar/the band said are sometimes less than true. When I read Edgar’s book I realized that for many reasons a biography of the band by a historian would have been preferable to an autobiography. I believe that TD’s live albums became actual representations of what was actually played after Jerome joined the band. That being said, I really like the official “live” albums including Live Miles. As a fan, I’m glad I have both the actual concerts and Live Miles in my music library.
@synoneiro6 ай бұрын
@@robertforman3494 yes, as I understand it Livemiles was collaged from soundchecks and rehearsals etc and bore only occasional resemblance to the actual gigs.
