I wouldn't miss a minute of the process! Pure gold, every minute!

It’s always a learning experience, so NO it’s not all about you. We, or at least me, are great full that you share your thoughts and stimulate our thoughts. I’m still using the information you provided years ago about using Jarvis photos, and mine come out very successful. Thank you for all you do.

As always Rus, Love your videos. I haven't tried greyscale engraving for years now. I always found that dithered images products a more consistant results. Especially when the wood being engraving on have different grains caused by the rings of the tree.

very interesting video, thank you very much I'm new to laser engraving (just bought a machine), and I'm slowly acquiring the necessary tools I have a question: What's the name of the tool you're using at 19.13 to set distance from the material?

Hi Lucio That is a step gauge I designed for setting the focus. You can make it yourself from acrylic or MDF. . Just add your disguised email address to another comment and I will send you the DXF and also delete your comment. Best wishes Russ

Not really sure but i heard that changing the frequency makes some kind of difference to color. Are you going to try changing it?

That question will be answered with a practical comparison in the next session. The short answer is no. There are many myths and lots of armchair experts that don't even have a laser machine . Be careful about what others tell you. I try to demonstrate and learn the truth for myself. I share what I find but some times my early conclusions may be wrong. So even I am not to be trusted. Hey Russ, Great video as always. Been following you for a long time. I got my red 60w machine around the same time you got your 50w blue. You are definitely one sharp man. Really quick I just wanna say thank you for everything. All your videos have taught me so much 👍☕. This grayscale engraving is definitely a challenge, but when it can be done people go crazy over it. I wish there was an easier way to perform grayscale. The way I achieve the best results currently is through dithering. I manipulate the image with high contrast then convert it to grayscale and then I dither the image. Turning the image into many dots. I'm sure you are aware of this process. It's not easy haha. If you ever wanted to know the exact process I use, feel free to reach out to me anytime. I'm definitely following this approach you have. Really interesting and love watching your trial an error. Are you using RDworks bmp import feature to perform grayscaling/photo engraving? Keep up the awesome work Russ! Cheers, Lance

Hi Lance The process of dithering to produce a binary image is the only way to get realistic photo replication. However, there are many dithering algorithms that try to convert grayscale into binary (black and white). These have all be developed for the black ink on white paper print industry. We have tried to hijack these techniques for laser engraving and with careful attention to detail such as dot size, material choice it is possible to get amazing images that are maybe 90% ink print quality. Choice of dithering algorithm is very important because not all algorithms suit laser engraving. The one I have found to give superb results is Floyd-Steinberg. It is hidden within Photoshop as Diffusion dither . If you use Lightburn, turn on the Pass Through switch so that your image is not reprocessed. I had high hopes for photo engraving with an RF tube, Sadly, when I lift the hood on this technology, I find it is less capable for this task than the slower glass tube technology. Best wishes Russ
