The paintings on the wall were all done by her, you can see she was the only one doing them in the songs where she's explaining what she does in a day. So her subconcious drew the symbol on all of her paintings not knowing where she saw it, but it was there in her memory. The painting of her as a baby also wasn't in the tower, she was remebering it from when she saw it in the city before she and Flynn danced in the town square. Seeing the symbol on the flag and then noticing it somewhere in all of her paintings triggered a memory she didn't know she had, of seeing that same symbol when she was a baby, and when she noticed the resemblence of the people in that memory to the ones she saw on the painting of the lost princess, she realized she was the lost princess and remebered putting on the crown infront of a mirror.

27:20 SO HAPPY TO ANSWER THAT. Rapunzel was the one who painted the tower - she's been painting the sun symbol unconsciously because deep down she remembers it from her childhood.

To explain the scene at 26:53 she (Rapunzel) was subconsciously painting the sun design her whole life so, when she realized, she remembered the thing above her bed had the same design. Then, in the same memory, she saw the king and queen/her parents causing her to think of the mural in the actual town. Then that caused her to realize that she looked like the lost princess with the crown on.

Rapunzel painted them on the ceiling, she's been painting all the walls, she said it in the first song. The reason the sun made her have the memory is because the sun was in her crib when she was a baby, laying down and looking up at the sun is what made her remember, she couldn't see clearly the image of her mother and father but then she noticed how similar their silhouettes looked to a mural that was in the castle of the three of them. Then it looked at her as a baby, she realized that she looks a lot like the princess and when she put the crown on she was her, then she realized she is the princess.

27:14 LOL Okay, so when she was a baby, her crib had a picture of the sun above it, which is the kingdom's symbol. She has been subconsciously painting that symbol all over her room in the tower for her entire life. When she went into that town with Flynn (when they danced), she saw a mural of the king and queen and learned about the lost princess. She also received that cloth with the sun symbol on it at that point. When she goes home to the tower, she's looking at the sun, sees the subliminal sun paintings she's surrounded herself with, and has a flashback to her 1-day-old baby day(s) in her crib where she first saw that sun. (How did she remember something so vividly from her newborn baby days? I don't know. Maybe the hair on her head healed her memories or something? Movie magic, I guess LOL) She remembers the story of the lost princess and realizes that she is the lost princess. The ownership of the tower and its construction is unclear, but Rapunzel is the one who painted the suns in the tower and the mural was in the town, not the tower. The real question is why Rapunzel even knows what a birthday is, let alone why Mother Gothel told her her actual birthdate instead of making something up months later so this birthday/lantern/princess correlation could never be drawn Also, this commentary was a wild ride LOL

The reason why she kidnapped Rapunzel was because that flower could give her eternal youth so now that Rapunzel drank the flower when she was a baby she absorbed all its magic. That’s why even her tears at the end were magical even though she didn’t have her hair. So yeah Mother Gothel basically kidnapped her so she could keep her young.
