How it went down: Tangled the series director: All right animators! Season one was fire!! Keep it up!! Some mf Disney advertiser: Yeah, actually, kids don’t care about plot. Let’s change the title and make the the story more “child friendly” and pack season 2 with filler. Later: Our viewer count has dropped. Let’s just stop advertising and do one showing at 7am on Sundays like in the song! Tangled story writers: We have a big plan for season 3!! Animators: yes!! Disney producers: Yeah, well no ones gonna watch it so let’s just cut some corners. Later: Tangled story writers: We have this idea, it’s called “Varian and the Seven Kingdoms” It’ll help our branding!! Disney: does it have Rapunzel? Writers: N- Disney: forget it Result: Frozen 2 and TTS/RTA is forgotten.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought season 3 was pretty weak. I mean, it has its shining moments, but like you said, the majority of it was rushed, especially when it came to lack of character development (glances at Rapunzel) and a weak villain with no motive to her plans.

The reason why is because Rapunzel is closer to Cassandra than she is to Varian. Rapunzel knows Cassandra better than Varian and knows that the way Cassandra was acting while a villain wasn't the real her and that there was at the heart of their conflict was a misunderstanding. So Rapunzel never gave up on Cassandra because she believed that some how she would be able to get through to her eventually. Anytime Cassandra gets brought up by anyone the sentiment Rapunzel always expresses is that, "don't worry, we'll get her back someday." Rapunzel's friendship with Varian unfortunately just isn't as strong as it is with Cassandra (who she spends her every waking moment with) and though I am convinced that Rapunzel and Varian (and also Cassandra) spent time off screen with each other working on the mystery of the rocks together and getting buddy buddy between Great Expotations and Queen for a Day, Rapunzel knows less about Varian than she does Cassandra. Factor in Varian's bad reputation and you can see why Rapunzel gives him a lot less grace and benefit of the doubt then she gives Cassandra for doing almost the exact same things. Rapunzel doesn't know enough about Varian to know that he is acting out of character to who he truly is and is acting out of anger and pain. I am sure that Rapunzel wrote off Varian's behavior after he stole the sundrop flower as him showing his true colors...maybe unstable from grief and pitiable for that, but still living up to his unsavory reputation. So therefore no need to reason and plead to his better nature, since he doesn't have one, and all his kindness before was a mask. As far as Rapunzel was concerned Varian was living up to his reputation and she treated him accordingly. I always thought that there was some deeply unconscious prejudice or bias on Rapunzel's part when it came to how she handled Varian's predictament after the snow storm do to his dangerous reputation. As opened minded as Rapunzel is portrayed to be I think Varian's reputation definitely influenced how she dealt with him without her even realizing it.

2:00 Well No, I have to heavily disagree with that. Varian did serve an important role for the rest of this Season. As you said here at 2:37 The Episode titled "Be Very Afraid" where The A-plot focuses on Varian's Character Growth/Development of learning to face his fears. Yeah, if you look at it in face value you think it's "Not much" of Varian's Character but actually It's a GREAT way to progress and develop his Character so much more and so as the rest of this Season. #1. It addresses Varian's PTSD about loosing his Father again thinking he might accidentally go back to making the same mistakes again and It nicely addresses the fact that Not Everyone in the entire Kingdom of Corona forgives Varian after what he did during the Season 1 Finale and off-screen during Season 2 while Rapunzel & the gang were away on their journey to the Dark Kingdom and Varian & The Saporians took over the Kingdom. Which kinda makes Rapunzel's hallucination vision of Varian by the cursed idol in The Season 2 Episode "Happiness Is..." pretty accurate to what Varian is doing while she's away. It actually adds to what Varian was saying during The Season 3 Premiere where he said Nobody would forgive him after everything he's done and that's why he went through with the memory erase serum called "Quirineon" He took their Queen Prisoner, He Threaten their Princess, He Waged war against the Kingdom, He committed Treason, Attempted to kill Cassandra & Queen Arianna in a fit of blind rage and he helped break The Saporians out of prison and took over their Kingdom. Yeah, in real life around this time period Varian would face some serious jail time for that if not a whole life prison sentence or worst hanged. And The Citizens of Corona said that Varian enslaved them in forcing them to supply him to get the syntheses materials he needs to conjure up some more Alchemy. Hence why Feldspar in "Be very Afraid" said "Don't You Got A Kingdom To Take Over Or Something?" showing us that Varian's worries were true that not too many people are willing to forgive and forget and we see that progressively lowered his confidence throughout the Episode. And that great Character moment of him hesitating to use the Amber Alchemy potion again on The Red Rocks due to him being afraid it might repeat the process all over again, even admitting everything was his own fault in 2nd half of Season 1 finally owning up to the blame and responsibilities that happened wrongfully pinning the blame on Rapunzel and saying this potion made him do terrible things and he doesn't blame the people of Corona for not forgiving him. And thus learning how Rapunzel deals with facing her fears and worries and her reassuring him that he's not "ordinary" like he thinks he is and thus gained his confidence back that's how he came through in the end. And everyone now forgives him for doing a selfless heroic act in saving The Entire Kingdom from The Red Rocks. Kinda added to what Todoroki said in The Anime My Hero Academia "Actions Speak Louder Than Words, You have to show what You're trying to prove" You know to earn someone's trust and faith in you show them through your actions. Like another Example Katara refusing to forgive Zuko at first in Book 3 of Avatar until he proved himself to her. #2. In The Episode "Cassandra's Revenge" Off-Screen, sadly. Rapunzel & Eugene gave Varian The Demanitus Scroll to translate and decipher the ancient text and thus he discovered a Major plot-point by The Season half way point where there's 4 Incantations 2 of which Rapunzel knows, Heal & Decay with the 3rd is for anyone possesing The Moon Stone's powers Which many Tangled fans called it "The Moon Incantation" and there's a secret 4th Incantation on the back of the scroll where Varian used sunlight to see it Thank to Zhan Tiri giving him the hint, but you've gotta think about it Varian saved everyone's asses in The Season 3 half way point! Eugene & Rapunzel could've pretty much died if Varian hadn't translated the scroll in the first place and gave it to Rapunzel for "The Sun Incantation" And Need I mention The song "Nothing Left To Lose"? No, otherwise you'll see another long paragraph from me and I think this comment is going on long enough as it is. And also Varian was also partially unintentionally responsible for building Cassandra's 1000ft+ Tower. So anyway, let's move on. #3. Varian did helped during the last 3 episodes of Season 3, yeah he didn't cause any BIG changes or meaningful stuff but at least he tried to execute a solution in getting rid of Zhan Tiri once and for all. Like yeah he helped trying to build the Kingdom stronger defenses with Eugene. Varian made Lord Demanitus' old machinery to make a portal sending Zhan Tiri to some sort of "netherworld" Yes granted it didn't work as the Castle was crumbling down and smashed the portal but it was still a good plan and solution at the time before it all went to hell And Varian tried to fight back for his Kingdom as well as everyone else, it was a futile effort but everyone knows this and they're still willing to die trying. Even Varian said it earlier in the Series Finale during the song "Through It All" where he said "Onward We Ride, Who Knows If We Will Make It Back" basically his way of saying "We might all die from this battle but, who cares!? fight on!" #4. And also let's not forget Varian building a stronger friendship and trust with Eugene through the 2nd half of The Season [A.K.A "Team Awesome!"] Ever since "Cassandra's Revenge" Eugene & Varian came closer almost like a big brother, little brother dynamic like trusting and consulting him with "Project Obsidian" and where Eugene tried to warn Varian about his Father might be turning on them since with him being a member of "The Brotherhood" which Eugene was right about but he backs down in telling Varian because he doesn't want Varian to get all upset or worried about it and with Varian trusting Eugene's judgement in the end despite not agreeing with it at first going in denial and almost snapping on Eugene as they were climbing up the mountain was honestly a nice growth moment for Varian making that stun mechanism on his Dad's old helmet. And let's not forget Varian had a lot of great other Character interaction moments in this Season with Red, Angry, Xavier, Cassandra, Rapunzel & Lance. So saying "Disney did your boy Varian dirty this Season" is kind of an asinine statement. Seeing how he did serve just as much as a purpose as he did in Season 1 only not as the Villain this time. I felt like Varian didn't get enough credit from some fans this Season even though he did help forward several plot points.

Im glad he became a main character this season, i just wish in the finale he helped defeat zhan tiri with cassandra the way Rapunzel did it with her, and then Rapunzel healed everyone. And for the hug in the end i saw someone say how it would be nice if they gradually brought everyone into it, which seems like a nice idea to me, or i would just add Varian, Lance, Kiera and Catalina

Which developed characters and provided context for their friendship - it was very unclear why would Rapunzel even want to be a friend with Cassandra, considering that their personality were so different - , episode which showed early, post tower Rapunzel and how she slowly adapted to live in society and trying to forge friendships for the first time in her life and how people reacted to her...not to mention how hilarious was this episode! Probably cause they chose to show this origin episode so late in the show. And also probably that it really wasn’t needed? In my opinion, if they wanted to show the origin of Cass and Raps friendship they could have done it earlier. Or just not done it because we already knew they were close friends. Everyone has their own opinions. Example, I for one actually wanted Cass to stay the villain because I thought she made a better one the creepy ghost girl.

This is inaccurate. Season 3 finale aired the month before worldwide quarantine. I think Disney would have planned this series (if it has new seasons planned) to take advantage in debuting it in Disney+ for fresh content.
