My issue with the BF wagon is it runs too cool, especially in winter. Assuming the thermostat might be a lower temp version and opens too early. It's important for the coolant and engine oil to reach recommended operating temperature. So I've ordered a new normal temp one and will be doing the coolant flush at the same time. Thanks for the video.
@tangles015 жыл бұрын
I've seen this to be a common problem, and one mine suffers from too, the thermostats I think are just cheap junk from factory as as they "fail open" to avoid overheating and blowing a head gasket, the do operate under temp. Towing 2.5t with 500kg of kit in summer with mine only just gets it up to half way on the temp gauge.

Hi Tangles, great video as always. Very detailed. A couple of hacks for this job can be to drain coolant and refill with your water, then add your flush. It will have greater cleaning power with majority of coolant removed. Pretty much all but Nulon follow this procedure. Also if you don't want to deal with the hot water issue at the drain cock, remove the thermo fan assembly and drain from the top. It's a 5 minute job if same as BF falcon, 2x 10mm bolts and disconnect plug, and it lifts straight out. Easy access to drain cock, and no laying under car. keep up the great work mate.

great video, i didnt know there was a drain plug on the radiator. Was wondering if you could use just tap water for the flush cycle.
@tangles016 жыл бұрын
Glad I could help. You shouldn't use tap water really, but for say one flush you probably will and will never see a negative result for it. Also depends on just how many chlorides are in your tap water. Brisbane tap water is perfectly healthy and drinkable but being a largish city has a high ish level of chlorides. Being a job done every few years though, the extra few bucks is worth it in my opinion. If you had to do it every 6 months, it might be a different story.
@TheOneWhoMightBe5 жыл бұрын
@@tangles01 I didn't know the plug was there either. I did a flush on a couple of our Falcons recently. My strategy was simply to disconnect the bottom hose and also remove the thermostat cover, stick the hose in, and flush the system with tap water (both directions). Then flush like you did with demineralised water (replace both hoses, fill, remove both hoses again to drain), replace the thermostat with a new one (I put a new 'stat in every coolant change. It's probably not necessary but it is peace of mind and they don't cost much), and fill the system with a coolant/water mix. In our case we're not towing much so I simply dumped the whole bottle of coolant in and topped up what was needed with water rather than trying to hit a certain mix.

Hey mate good vid. The upper rad hose connection on the original radiator cracked and broke off on my phantom purple ba. Upon the mechanic replacing the radiator he never put coolant in only put water in. My temp will jump above half very easily. Should I consider changing my thermostat before flushing the system fully to avoid the engine over heating when I leave it running for these 10-15 minute periods of time or is it only getting so warm because I have no coolant in the system?
@tangles01 Жыл бұрын
Water os actually a better pure coolant than the coolant, coolant has anti corrosion additives. Iron block, ally head, you want coolant of some sort. It coming up to temp quick then stabilising means there thermostat is working as designed. I'd just drop the water if it's clear fill with coolant. If it's discoloured flush until clear. Then coolant.

The 2 hard lines running into the radiator are transmission fluid lines, the transmission cooler is inside the radiator. so they will have oil in them yes. On the BA falcon there is a trans fluid cooler inside the radiator. if it has split and they are leaking into each other you'll have coolant in your transmission.
