This song will always be fresh and captivating, it talks to imagination, gives one's mind an instant vacation. Same quality had Leonard Cohen. I heard it first in a hectic store in Warsaw around 1988. Subconsciously registered a bliss, before realizing it's a calming song breaking through everyday noise. Thanks to the miracle of Internet in 2020 I'm able to learn its story :-) THANK YOU TANITA :-))

I heard this song when I was 17 or 18 and going through a very rough time as someone from the third world having come to Europe and forced to live a life of poverty and emotional distress. The song had a mysterious gravitas and swag that and so did the video. All the persons who styled and produced this video, the song and especially the songwriter Tanita, have somehow crafted something together that influenced me. When I heard this song I remember very well that although it made me sad, it also made me feel as id there are people in this world like me. Who will understand me. Or that there is something amidst the darkness in humanity, that resonates with me. So that I may have a chance. So that humanity may have a chance.

This song is really a world apart. You can be proud of it! And my hat off to the producers who, instead of butchering it, made it sound stellar. Now I want to go back to my own songs and give them the life they deserve...

I first heard this song being played while I was on the Bobsled ride at a Carnival in Zuffenhausen, Germany in 1988 and could not get it out of my head. Years later and back in the USA, thanks to the internet, I was able to identify and download "Twist in my sobriety" and add to one of my regular playlists. To date, I am often asked questions about the artist, the origin to which I can now refer to the very comprehensive video. Reactions to the song are mixed and I cannot explain its effect on me. I am glad I came across this documentary as I have also always wanted to visit Norway which many of my associates find strange as well.

Twist in my sobriety and Boys for pele album of Tori Amos and quite a few more songs are the highest level of pop music....There is nothing like that any more to captivate the heart of a broad population...
@nikolaacimovic88546 жыл бұрын
There is nothing of these kind of expression any more in the pop music...I was kid when I did hear this song for the first time and something in me was spoken by this song very directly...Some kind of very very deep sadness blow my heart...I keep to listen this song for more than 30 years...I play so called classical music and I am not much sure that I understand a great number of pop music songs,neither from the point of view of its idea nor from "theoretic-estetic" point,whatever it means...But in Twist in my sobriety everything is present:musical idea ( both in personal and universal meaning ),simplicity, rhythm in the background like the pulse of planet Earth,Oboe song like a seccond theme to add aditional color on what had to be said in the main course of lyrics ( beginning on subdominant minor repeated tone it brings such peaceful drama to these lyrics so that musical energy fluctuates to the point of immense sadness )...

I love to see how she has this roundup personality, all falling so neatly into place, and yet so not boring. I am sure it is not like that in 'real life' but she gives off this vibe that inspires one to try and go have a beautiful life, become a beautiful persona. I find her definition of what matters nowadays - that is, collaborating - again very revealing of how she is ahead of her time and able to capture what a given era is all about. Just as she did with the initial lines of twist in my sobriety. Very unique really. Beauty:)

@@theflyingfox8204 "Also" is an important word here. I think that the strangeness and the 'mysteriousness' alone would not suffice for most of people. It would certainly not suffice for me. Many people who like this song do not even know English well, so in their case the lyrics is irrelevant.

Almost, and I mean this in the nicest way possible, has a Grace Jones flavour, a deepness of voice not expected. Very good rhythm, catchy, easy to follow and enjoy. Good depiction of (I thought at the time) perhaps a Spanish or Mexican connection to the singer, maybe I am wrong. Interesting, to me, that out of all the songs Tanita did, Good Tradition was my least favourite.
