Another informative video. I have boots on all 16 of my tanks. One additional tip: some boots are hard to get on the tank, but if you soak the boot in hot water for a few minutes it will slip right on and then grip the tank when it cools. Thanks for sharing your tips... I love them!

Hey Alec. As I'm just on the look-out for a good summer holiday read 📚 I thought it would be awesome if you could present a few books scuba related books that you would suggest to read. I would greatly appreciate it.

There are a lot of scuba related books from technical to stories but to do it right, I would have to read the book (not skim it). Sorry but I don't have time with all my At The Ranch projects to do it properly. Try the various scuba magazines as most have book reviews. Hope this helps get you something nice to enjoy.

Blue Steel/Faber still sells steel tanks with the form fitting softer plastic tank boots, those trap water terribly. You can get after market steel tank boots that are the hard plastic design that drain better, but even those should be removed periodically to ensure that you are able to rinse everywhere.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter3 жыл бұрын
Good point Peg. Tank boots must be removed for hydro testing and should be removed for a complete VIS inspection (some stores skip that). Thanks for watching.

I was hoping this might offer tips on getting the tank boot onto the tank without breaking it. It always seems a challenge for me.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter2 жыл бұрын
Here is an easy way, position the tank 6-8" over the boot, let the tank down so the boot is positioned correctly and then up/down the tank to drive the boot fully onto the tank. Some like rubber mallets or hammers but that puts force on one spot, not all around the boot. Give it a try. A
@LeonardBaak2 жыл бұрын
@@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter I found a way online that worked great. I soaked the boot in a sink of hot water (just hot water from the tap) for a few minutes and wiped the bottom of the tank with a soapy paper towel (liquid hand soap). Then I just lowered the tank into the water warmed boot. It went on much easier.
@michaelclarke89723 жыл бұрын
Another "help" to drain off water is tp ensure that there are drainage holes in the base of the boot. If there are none, just drill a few so that the water can drain out of the boot.
@alainbourgault19373 жыл бұрын
Considering all that I've witness in my not so long life, I feel obligated to put a disclaimer on that comment; DO NOT DRILL HOLES IN YOU BOOT WHILE IT"S ON THE TANK!!!!!!

a very important fact Alec specified is that that a tank should be free of surface damage, that is so important that on highly fatigue cycled parts that a surface shoot peening is mandatory, this is even more important on high performance materials that are used on a fatigue situation. it is the main reason why a periodic hydrotest is mandatory, this test at 5/3 of the service pressure have a dual mission, the first one is is obviously to proof the tank, the second one , less evident, is to cause the blunting of the micro cracks that arose in the normal filling service. personally, I find a bit abusive that test on tanks that sees only a few filling per year but is is totally justified on a tank that is commercially used and sees many fillings every day. as a failure can cause important damages or death the procedure have its reason to exist.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter3 жыл бұрын
I see your point regarding commercially used tanks versus personal tanks but, there has to be a standard so 5 years was chosen. It's not unreasonable. It may be a bit too long for commercial tanks and a bit too soon for personal use tanks but it's a good compromise. Alec

Thanks for informative video.Technical question: is it possible to put on the first stage on a tank under water without destroying it? What will happen if water gets thru the regulator? Are there differences between piston and di. regulator in above situation?
@Teampegleg3 жыл бұрын
It can be done, it is considered a possible emergency procedure in tech diving. But there is a chance that it won't work, and it will require a complete tear down and rebuild following. So it is done only in an absolute emergency, ie it is the only way to get enough breathing gas to make it to the surface safely.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter3 жыл бұрын
Possible, yes, advised: only in an emergency. ANY water that enters the 1st stage, salt or fresh will require a full service before diving again. Both types are affected equally as water will have entered the HP and LP ports. Note allow that the water entering the 1st stage will be pushed into the HP and LP hoses so your air integrated dive computer hose and possibly computer may be affected. The 2nd stage will need a service to remove the water from the hose and reg. Water in the LPI hose will affect the schrader valve before entering the power inflate valve. Overall NOT advised as everything from the 1st stage outward will need checking, cleaning and service to ensure nothing fails. Take care.

Should I be removing my tank boot to clean the tank? I mostly just dive lakes but occasionally travel to the ocean.
@nathanjohnson92313 жыл бұрын
I've had the same question. I'm not sure how easy it is to get them off though.
@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter3 жыл бұрын
Fresh water diving gets mostly mud and sand, its salt water that really corrodes a tank. After a days diving, if you have a solid lead weight, us it to tap around the boot, assuming its hard plastic, to work the boot off. Soft boots and be pulled by sitting down, hold the tank between your legs and use both feet on the sides to pull it off. Rinse and hold the tank over the boot and drop it down to push the boot back on. With practice takes only a minute off and on.

And yet we still see all the GUE tech divers ripping off all their boots from aluminum and steel cylinders alike. Steel 100 HP doubles leaned up against wall.

Must be a GUE thing for doubles. My vintage friends have old doubles and some triples, all with boots to stand up. A
@SeattleRingHunter9 ай бұрын
@@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter Absolutely is a GUE thing. A lot of great GUE divers but they follow a very specific gear configuration and believe to only take what you need in a dive. I suspect at some early point they noticed tank damage, some may have felt it was slightly more drag or slightly less streamlined for what ever reason, or maybe some diver caught the edge of a rigid tank boot against a cave rock or hard edge while penetrating a sunken ship. No real safety concern from what I can come up with they refuse to use a boot on both aluminum and steel cylinders. I tend to be more about practicability and not wanting my steel tanks to tip over in my garage. The Seems quite “lame” to me but some how some where they got it stuck in their police station not to use tank boots. Doesn’t make them right as they like to think Doing It Right, it’s no longer about right or wrong. It’s about what works and having the correct gear for the application at hand.
