🇳🇴After the Second World War, as part of the United States-led Military Aid Program (MAP), Norway received around 130 M24 Chaffee light tanks to help rebuild its military. In the early years of the Cold War, the Norwegian Military (Forsvaret, Eng: “The Defence”) was happy with the M24 Chaffee, as it fitted its needs. Its small size made it perfect for operations in the harsh Scandinavian terrain.
By the 1960s, however, it was apparent that the 75 mm gun-armed Chaffee was in need of an upgrade if it was to combat the threat represented by the USSR. The 75 mm gun would be no match for the thick armor of Soviet tanks such as the T-54/55 or T-62. It was decided that the vehicle needed a new, more powerful gun, as well as many other new internal and external components.

That reminds me that these crazy Jugoslavs put a Soviet-made 122 mm gun on a Sherman. That was post-2nd WW, but man! Imagine it: Soviets getting Lend-Lease Shermans, they see the British made the Firefly, and they get the same idea themselves. That would have been even worse of a surprise for the Axis tankers. "You think the Firefly is a problem for us. You haven't seen what the Soviets can do yet."

People underestimate small lightly armored tanks. They are only small and lightly armored for a tank. Are you laughing at my Chaffee? We have a word for people who laugh at my Chaffee, we call them pedestrians.

I really love seeing older vehicles modernized with advanced technologies. I hope this tank will be added in the Swedish tree in WT sometime.

These were built primarily as the M24 had significantly better tundra and mountain mobility, allowing a lot more armored support for mountain fighting, which if you’re going to invade Norway would be a significantly part of the campaign.

The low pressure gun makes sense, an upgraded punch with limited range, but with Norwegian terrain it can easily be put to good use despite its limited range, it is nothing like the open steppes of eastern Europe for example. At best you would have a few long range engagements in eastern Norway where some of the only flat land in Norway is, and despite how much we like teasing our neighbor Sweden I don't think they are likely to take is so badly they would have invaded.

It's not the size that counts, it's how you use it. A good example of getting maximum use out of an aging asset. I'm sure they would have done good service if called on to do so.

The NM-116 is such a beautiful design that, coupled with the recovery variant, really highlighted what could've been done with the venerable Chaffee...instead, we tended to just see them get sold away or replaced with larger and more expensive vehicles. That low-velocity, 90mm proved itself, at least decently, against Soviet tanks in Africa, and while the NM116 may have been more of a tank destroyer, a combination of a vehicle like that and something like M113s could've made for a light mechanized unit on a budget. Shame... (take my like for 1k 👍)

Excellent video you covered a lot considering the length but I especially appreciated the feedback of the Norwegian commander who gave good insight and importance of tactics to overcome and compete with more powerful tanks.

Good vid, Tony did good and pronounced the Norwegian words well. The tank you see in vaman's vid and Rogalands Krigshistoriske Museum's tank is the samme vehicle. It is also on loan from the Defence museum (Forsvars museet). This vehicle currently in storage and for the time being not available to the public.

Well, if only these improved tanks could've been available in Korea at the start of Norsk attack, the tiny M24s haven't any chance against T34s, but I'm afraid that against the T62s these improved tanks would've been hopeless, at least against the front/turrets' armour.

Can anyone explain to me the small curved metal plate on the right / starbord side of the turret, that is used as a hand rest in some of the clips? Is it a bullet deflector? A protection against branches wiping off the crews` personal kit stowed behind? It is even featured on the Cobi-model with a special brick, so it seems to be of some importance.

@@TanksEncyclopediaYT With pleasure! The little elephant`s ear can be seen in the very first clip, best at around 0:26 located to the left of the white star, the spike in the 10 o`clock position is somewhat pointing at it, diagonally upwards to the right from the rectangular hatch on the turret side. I spent some time with research, and it seems to me that this metal plate is in fact a protecting shield. Behind it there are the necessary straps and a pintle mount to the left of the above mentioned hatch to fasten a M2 Browning machine gun (either the MG or an additional spare MG) with its back / handle grip facing forward and the barrel to the rear.

think about this, the at the time Soviet Union could leverage tens of thousands of tanks + other types of midrange missile salvos meanwhile NATO states had, has & are attempting to compensate for merely being capable of leveraging kinda a few hundred (due to the expectation[s] that the US would actually handle it) 🤔
