I feel like this is the one situation where a humanoid vehicle would at least has a little advantage over tank: having hands to shoot around the corner, or use the shield (which can be thicker/ more protective) on the side where the hit come from. Yet they have to use Gun Tank, which provide almost zero advantage over a traditional tank. It is a shame Gundam don't get to be more realistic.
@matthiuskoenig33783 жыл бұрын
a shield really isn't any different to just haveing a turret (the front of a tank has more armour, and 90% of hits on tanks hit the turret), so its not really an advantage to have a shield. as for shooting around corners, surely if they have the tech for mech arms that can withstand the recoil force they can make a cannon on the end of an arm mounted on a conevntional tank hull. the sole advantage of mech suits would be in very rocky terrain, like in mountains, where the 2-4 limbs allows the vehicle to climb over and around the rock fromations more eaisly than similarly armoured conventional hulls.

The discussions/arguments about the viability of mobile suits and mechs in general here got me thinking- the reason for mass adoption of mobile suits would likely be down to their modular nature and the ability of pilots to offset numerical superiority to a greater degree. For example, it was argued that tanks and fighter "jets" could do a mobile suit's job better. But neither of them would likely be as modular between space, air, land, and naval combat. And if you had a base mobile suit with variants you could likely have fewer issues swapping parts, which could help with logistics as well as theoretically switching out this "gear" for that set when switching from say land to space or such. That's actually an element that I remember one of the series addressing. And then the pilot offsetting things element; an expertly trained hand to hand fighter can take on a number of lesser trained opponents (I'm thinking more combat systems and less martial arts) to the point where their expertise outweighs the numbers. While in warfare generally the trend has been advance technology to enable a greater degree of threat from soldiers who may have just enlisted or so on rather than it's their entire life and profession, if mobile suits could tip that balance in favor of essentially making a real life person able to do fictional feats of battlefield superiority, then that would, longtail, probably make a huge difference in terms of attrition. Of course, you could argue AI robots would be better, but cyber warfare could eventually outmode that so that systems would have to be more self-contained. A lot of the mech stuff, though, I think ultimately comes down to available technology. You'd need at least workable fusion or something to consistently power them, and for them to move with the grace necessary to consistently outmaneuver tanks and such you'd need materials with enough tensile strength and so on. I'm sure there are elements I'm not taking into account, but the necessarily future-focused scenario required for mechs to be viable even just technologically would involve situations like possibly having colonized other planets, which would drastically impact things like available resources and logistics, and so on. So maybe it really is hard to adequately address the viability of them while only thinking from our present state.
@Chocolacchio Жыл бұрын
You're right. In the gundam universe namely UC (universal century), the first mobile suits were produced by the Zeons using miniaturized nuclear fusions, due to their mobility they can fight spaceships and carry out sabotage operations in space colonies. The speed and mobility of these mobile suits do give them an edge in battle, especially with variants made for sea, jungle, desert environments. Unlimited customization, speed and mobility made the mobile suits a practical weapon for both sides.
@Capsuleer79 ай бұрын
The argument I make for mecha is mostly the same as yours. It's a force multiplier. A mech is more adaptable to a wide variety of situations and, due to a humanoid form, more useful in situations where ad hoc thinking is required. A tank or artillery system is limited in terrain. You can't easily place them on mountain tops, for example, and that limitation can be accounted for by ones enemies. But a bipedal mech? It can go a lot of places conventional weapons can't. They also would make for great impromptu engineering machines. Facilitating construction of bases in the field quickly as opposed to requiring non-combat oriented machinery. As for the feasibility or viability of mechs? Well, A LOT of things were considered impractical or outright impossible until material sciences caught up. Much of the way we fight wars today was considered fantasy or extremely costly until it, well, wasn't. The greatest failure of a military mind is to assume one has "solved" war. Then, some lunatic makes a walking tank and blindsides your ass. Throwing all your notions of conventional warfare out the window.
@mateuszbanaszak46713 ай бұрын
Hmh. Good points. In my opinion, mechs will never be practical as "the big stompers", because wheels and tracks are infinitely better at carrying weapons and armor. But as skirmishers or super-heavy infantry? They will require a 40mm grenade launcher to destroy, and most meat-bags will not even have the underbarrel one. In modern enviroment, urban combat will be so common and lasting event that adventagius technologies will develop, by the sheer need of them. Just imagine some borderpine power armor rushing from behind the corner at you, 'holding' a 2cm belt-fed shotgun. And y'all though that 5 buck drones with a frag are scary enough.
@CandleWisp2 ай бұрын

Howdy Folks... I'm your host, The Mighty Jingles. And today on World of Tanks. We have a short match with a Tier 17 Japanese mechanized tank destroyer, the the bizarrely named 'Guntank', in a tier 19 battle on the Concrete Jungle map with our lucky pilot, Renegade_J03. And, as one would expect in World of Tanks right off the starting bell, absolutely no one is bothering to use concealment. I guess when you're this auspicious, concealment is the last thing on your mind. And auspicious is the name of the game. The first thing you may notice about the Guntank, aside from its name, is that it barely classifies as a tank, what being a mech upper torso bolted to some treads so that it meets the technical requirements. The Japanese sure do love their giant robots. And with a pair of 500 millimeter cannons on its shoulders, 'giant' is certainly an apt description. One might say the Guntank is less a tank, and more a battleship turret that got stuck on land. Or it would if it had even remotely the armor a battleship turret has. It has a cool visor mod on it, though. Looks like a pair of futuristic sunglasses. Sunglasses the size of a windshield. Which isn't doing anything to improve the armor... And as you can see here, one shot from the twins, look at that recoil, and- Pffhahahahahaha! An ENEMY Guntank goes down. And right through the glacis... Or torso glacis. Or would that be chest armor on a half-mech? I don't know, but those shells cut through that armor like a hot knife through butter. What I do know is that the enemy team has a magnificent opportunity while the Guntank reloads for to return fire, and nobody takes a shot despite Renegade_J03 literally sitting there. Instead, despite the enemy just sitting in the middle of the street, the remaining three Guntanks immediately try to rock back and forth evasively while Renegade_J03 takes aim again. Which is not how you use a tank destroyer's mobility... And there's kill number two. At this point, I should point out that the Guntank is a two shot autoloader. Just two shots from each gun, and then you have to wait a FULL MINUTE to reload. 500 milimeter shells, remember? And Renegade_J03 isn't packing a Yamato's worth of men to speed the process up. It packs a punch, but you pay for it in the DPM department. Speaking of paying for it, it seems Renegade_J03 is taking his success out on credit. As instead of ducking away down a cross street, he decides that life is too short to cede ground and YOLOs his way towards the cap circle. Now, while the enemy team finally wakes up and takes a shot, the Guntank shows off why its a tank destroyer with its absolutely TERRIFYING top speed. Renegade_J03 manages to avoid two shots while traveling directly forwards at the enemy team, blasting away with his 120 mm secondary machine gun arm. Which is a lot less effective than you'd think, mainly because its accuracy is best defined as, not 'spray and pray', but rather 'crusade for a century and roll the dice as insurance prices go up'. He hits, nothing, despite the enemy team being in front of him. Unfortunately, Renegade_J03 forgot that there are enemy PLAYERS where the enemy team is... And between five, tier 19, Type-44C heavy tanks, and the two remaining enemy Guntanks... Yeah. The enemy team finally gets their act together, and Renegade_J03 realizes just a little too late that a cool visor helmet mod does not make a tank destroyer any more robust against heavy tanks, let alone five of them with twin cannons on par with his own. He takes 14 shots across his entire front face, totaling 4600 points of damage, and crumples like an empty soda can, earning himself the rare 'Public Enemy' award for being hit by no less than 6 enemies in a match. I guess he DID provide SOME utility, seeing as he took out two enemy tank destroyers and made them waste way more ammo than was needed to kill him. And I'd give him points for a stylish death. But that's all, and until next time folks...

Any angled slope will tip this thing over, cost of R&D is absolutely ridiculous, same as maintenance and its full of weak joints and increased number of sophisticated new systems and parts will start cause problems in any practical battlefield, where witch this thing needs specialized equipment for any maintenance and it can easily be spotted even from the thickest forest, camo nets or no. @Hellsong89 in-universe the guntank early type was basically just a unit for maintaining order, using its sheer size as a psychological weapon, inside the colonies (the fight scene takes place inside one) and not much else. I don't think the designers had any foresight in developing it aside from replacing the type 61 as the federation's MBT, granted it wouldn't really be doing much anyway during periods of peace. Iirc these suits were slowly phased out once the federation started development on the guncannon first type which was basically the guntank in concept but with legs.

This vid convinced me that tanks are superior to mechs. Unless there is shielding tech that can deflect shells, those mechs are just really big targets.

Being more hard sci-fi than most mecha series, the Universal Century timeline of Gundam actually kept tanks pretty viable for a long time in the setting. Mobile suits could often go where tanks could not, creating more tactical flexibility, but like tanks they couldn't hold ground, so infantry were still important, and tanks could still beat an MS in a 5:1 fight.... of course the Federation had the money, resources and production capacity to bring 10 to 1 ratios. MS were additionally vulnerable to a range of infantry anti-tank arms, like the wire-guided Regina ATGM launcher. So, useful in their own ways, but far from invulnerable. In particular the Battle of Odessa was primarily fought with traditional armoured and infantry units against the mix of mobile suit, armoured and infantry and despite the advantages of mobile suits, the Federation won through better offensive planning (leading to fairly early air superiority in the battle), logistics and bringing sheer quantity of both air and land forces to get the job done. The Feds used a few MS units equipped with field test ready prototypes in the battle, but it really wasn't until the battle was over that they began mass deployment of their own mobile suits and these units didn't have any particularly huge impact on the flow of the battle, except of course for the events of the original series. (summarized as the White Base carrier and it's small complement of suits keeping some of Zeon's top aces tied up and off the front lines where they could have done some serious damage, and then shooting down a poor loser's nuclear missile at the very end of the battle. Over all though, very little impact on the battle itself. Many other Zeon aces were there, and still couldn't turn the tide. It just wasn't going to happen.) As for post war, turretless, energy weapon equipped SPGs are still portrayed as being used upwards of 20 years later, but we don't really get to see them in action. Just background pieces taking hits and melting down unfortunately.

Later stages of the conflict or in space tanks became fazed out by beam weaponry or the mobility of mechs. But some do develop ERA packages as well.

@@narlord8613 I have no issues with Mobile Suits, they work well enough within their environment. But absolutely despise Guntank, partially due to how absolutely dumb it and all it's fight scenes are. Except for RX-440 Assault Guntank - that one is good. Really good, even through it and Hildolfr kinda break physics with their mobility.
@narlord86136 ай бұрын
@@kindlingking Uhm, the Guntank design has literally been around in Gundam for 40 years. It couldn't be changed, unless it was built with a cooler look.
@kindlingking6 ай бұрын
@@narlord8613 doesn't mean it's good. You also absolutely can change and tweak it's design tho, like Thunderbolt did. The issue however is that original Guntank at it's core is just too stupid, so you'll have to essentially design a completely new machine with function beyond being shitty artillery with a range less than of mortar. I'm not saying anyone is wrong for liking Guntank. I just really hate the thing.
