Tank Sounding pt 2 - Calculation of Volume (Daily Job on ships)

Second part to my sounding 2.0 video, this engine newbie will review what exactly is done when sounding with his proper procedure, why is it important, mistakes, uses, and an example of using the sounding and ullage tables at the end.
It is my daily routine every day for a year to think I didn't learn it so well at the academy..
This small job has a big importance on board!

Wow dude, that's what I hope to do.. Feed the curiosity of newbies like me, haha! Also I have some clips about on board lube oil tests: TBN, water in oil, and viscosity.. learned a lot from your videos, but the thing is, I belong on the deck department. A selfish request, can you make videos regarding deck works?duties? Where you are just going to film deck crew and narrate what they're doing instead of doing the actual thing. I am speaking on behalf of all your deck subscribers hehe

Hahaha that's quite a task! Unfortunately I'm not sure how I can film much of the deck side of operations work other than deck machinery.. As a junior engineer you don't have many jobs or free time to be on deck. Mostly 2nd engineer and chief engineers are more responsible in that area.. In any case this is a long term project and I'm sure eventually I'll cover those aspects of the vessel dude. In the mean time success and nothing else on your studies!

I've been on other ships now and have seen different styles of sounding tables, what you ask is pretty difficult for all types of tables.. I showed here an example from the vessel in which I was cadet. You should study each time you go to a new vessel and use this video maybe as reference. I'll try to make a new video but that only specifies ullage.

Hi sir, nicely explained. Have one doubt. If the vessel is trim by aft, we have to take the trim in negative or positive?

Thank you amigo and for sure it's a reasonable doubt! normally the computers will automatically show it to you in modern vessels however in older vessels one must know trim is taken negative when the ship is more submerged aft side (this is more safe because it helps the propeller stay submerged) If there is an irregularty or vessel is incorrectly loaded/discharged then you may have forward trim (bow is more submerged than aft) and it is represented with a postive in sounding tables.

@@ShrimptoShark Ehla Malakas. For vessel build in Japan / Korea the volume in the tank calibration tables are in Gross Kilolitres or GOV in blank English it's just gross volume. For vessels build in China in tank tables they indicate as VNET so do u know what is VNET. So my question is is this gross volume or is this corrected/volume?

@@jereksee9951 to be honest I had no idea what that was until you mentioned it and I investigated a little about it, quite frankly I don't think this concerns operational engineers of the vessel in terms of bunker or sounding. You have sounding tables on board which show the volume according to set levels. VNET seems to be a small reduction in the gross volume to take account of various things that can be inside the tank (2% reduction of the full GROSS volume of the tank) now 2% usually isn't a big deal in most small volume tanks (drain, bilge, SBO, overflow, LO, etc) however in bunker tanks it can be noticible on big Vessels. Anyway it depends on the chief weather or not he/she wants to calculate this reduction on the FULL gross volume. In any case tell me what you think, I read a little about it now that you mentioned it but to be honest neither me nor the other engineers where I was have ever heard of VNET before.

Hello Christian! Those valves come from the sounding tables of the ship (a book from the shipyard that has specific measurements and volumes calculated in the shipyard.)

Maybe the trim 3 is mutiplied by 10^-1 that we would subtract to the nearest lower at 0 trim which means that the volume of the tank at lowest is 13 cubic meter, same thing goes to the nearest higher. The reason maybe the volume is 12.7 and 14.7 is that the tank is in irregular shape since the area i found in the lower is at 14.11 meter squared and the higher has 14.7 meter squared.

Hello! List is not included in the sounding / ullage tables only trim, durning bunker you should have calculated everything before hand and on site you should only be waiting to reach the final ullage of the tank while it's filling. I'll try to make a video in the future but cameras are usually not allowed in bunker operations unfortunately for safety reasons. 😕
