iri it really depends on what it is cuz that scratching behavior is a first sign of a few different possible diseases. Most commonly it’s associated with ich. If you see little white spots on fine/body that would be ich. To treat ich you gradually raise temp in tank (in small increments every couple hours) up to 86°F or 30°C... then add aquarium salt NOT marine salt at a rate of 1 tablespoon per 2 gallons. Mix the salt in a bucket of tank water till it is dissolved then pour in. Water change frequently making sure to siphon the gravel thoroughly to remove the parasites that aren’t on a host yet. and when you change the water make sure you only add enough salt for the water you took out don’t dose the whole tank again cuz some of the salt is left over (example if tank is 10 gallons and you do 40% water change, only add 2 tablespoon for the 5 gallons you’re replacing). Keep doing the salt + heat combo for atleast a week after the last spots disappear. If the spots are not going away or getting worse, the medication Ich-X is the one I use that I find most effective (make sure to remove carbon in filter). But the salt/heat/clean water combo does the trick most often. If you don’t see white spots it is not ich it is probably another parasite like gill or skin flukes. In this case the salt is still helpful but the medicine I use is called “General Cure” and is very effective against a wide range of problems. Some scaleless fish like knifefish, loaches, and some catfish like corys can be very sensitive to aquarium salt. So if you have them monitor closely and if you’re really concerned then just do a half dose of the salt. The heat/cleanwater/medicine combo should be more than enough. Lastly, when medicating, add extra oxygen in the tank in the form of an extra bubbler or by lowering water level so filter outtake splashes more. Medicine in tank uses up some of available oxygen, so it’s always good to supplement the tank. I will try to make a video on my page on this later! Hope this works.

@@wolfmania10 wow thanks for the quick resonse. i noticed this happening on my dat a couple of days ago and started adding salt yesterday. originally, i did think it was ich but there hasn't been any signs of white spots throughout its body. then i was thinking gill fluke but gills aren't red/irritated either. so i'm not sure what it is. there is another dat in the tank and he seems perfectly fine. i will continue with salt, raise up the temperature, and see what happens. if i need to use medication i will use general cure. thanks for the help and again quick response

iri yes the combination of clean water and the salt is very very effective for many diseases as they are both very beneficial for the immune system of the fish along with salts extra ability to kill many parasites. Your datnoids should be very tolerant of the salt as many are rumored to venture into brackish waters in the wild. If you don’t see any other signs beside the scratching then you probably just caught something very early and this method should be enough and should not require extra medications. As always just keep a close eye on them, feed them well with good foods, and keep that water clean and they should have no problems. Tonight I will try to post a video about 20 minutes long with a full breakdown of treatment for ich and it will have a lot of good useful information in it to have if this is indeed ich or for future reference.

@@wolfmania10 the thing is i genuinely have no idea how the parasites got introduced. they haven't eaten since i gotten them from a friend (both 6-7 inches) a couple of weeks back and perform 50% water changes every 3-4 days. i do have a bare bottom tank and do see these extremely small debri laying at the bottom. but like i said ill continue with salt/waterchanges and turned up the temperature to 86 and purchsed general cure if the problem persists. thank you!
