This is not pazhamkanji, which is the left over rice in water from the previous day. This is made from Kanjivellam. A konkini friend of mine made it one day when she was visiting me, adding ground watercress to it. After she made it it tasted like pure thairsadom or morumvellom. She told me after the coo the rice they make this drink to give to the workers in their cardamom plantation, back in the days. Don’t think such things happen anywhere anymore. Its Torani in Odia and is traditionally served at all Odia temples and roadways for aeons. Tankaw means coin, while Tanka means money in Odia language, travelers could get it in a single penny in the olden days and only in some places now, hence its called Tankaw Torani in Odia. Edit- this is not Pant Bhat as Bengalis say, that is just rice soaked in water and we Odias call it Pakhaļaw. This is just ricewater, without the rice. In the olden days, they used to give it fermented.
