Prior to the war, the German Army was heavily engaged in expanding its new Panzer Divisions. For this purpose, great attention was given to the development of new types of tanks (Panzers). Due to German industry’s lack of production capacity at that time and despite great effort, the more desirable and stronger Panzer III and IV could not be produced in sufficient numbers. The Germans were instead forced to use a large number of the weakly armed Panzer I and Panzer IIs.
Luckily for the Germans, during the takeover of Czechoslovakia in early 1939, they came into possession of the Škoda and ČKD factories. With them, they obtained over 200 LT vz. 35 and, more importantly, some 150 (not all were finished by that time) LT vz. 38. While both would be put into service, the Germans were far more interested in the more advanced LT vz. 38, which was far superior to the German Panzer I and II and was a close match for the larger Panzer IIIs.
The LT vz. 38 would provide a great asset for the German Panzer Divisions during the first few years of the war. In later years, its chassis would be reused for a number of different modifications up to the war’s end.

This tank is the one that Otto Carius was assigned as a loader in his debut during Operation Barbarossa. He was injured by enemy fire, and was reassigned to the Tiger I as a commander in 1943. He was injured again severely while doing a motorcycle recon, recovered and finished the war in the behemoth that was the Jagdtiger. During this 3.5 year career, his tank gun went from 37mm to 128mm and tank weight from 9 to 72 tons. Quite the progression for a guy who initially was turned down for being underweight!

Thanks for the history video! I think the Germans were using this tank to account for over 20 percent of their forces against France 1940. BTW @16:04, that looks like Albert Speer so maybe its not 1939, Maybe he was looking at it to see what other variants the Germans could do with it.

When moving large objects and when interested in acceleration, torque is much more relevant than horsepower. Wondering why tank guides always focus on horsepower - something much more relevant for aircraft and sports cars. At this point, it's most likely inertia.
@kurt5490
@kurt5490 2 жыл бұрын
I dont get it either. Torque is what provides acceleration. Torque is what is actually doing the work. I don't know for sure but I suspect the word horsepower wad created to sell steam and then internal combustion engines to people of a horse powered economy.
@Salamandra40k
@Salamandra40k 2 жыл бұрын
...its a tank. Torque is handled by the transmission which, unlike in a car, can be as big as you need it to be. The gear ratios are way different, thats why horsepower matters. You can start a tank off as slow as you want, but whats important is being able to get up to a good running speed. Having a steam engine at 1hp but with 9000ft/lbs of torque wont get you going 24mph. However, a 200hp engine with the right transmission will. Edit: on top of that, 24mph isnt 2nd gear like in a car. Thats like, 8th gear TOP SPEED going downhill on roads for a tank at that time. Torque doesnt matter when 1st gear is only supposed to get you going like, 2mph max. Again, gear ratios and stuff on transmissions as big as you are, not little wimpy car transmissions.
@mikecanaday1631

Torque governs acceleration, horsepower governs top speed, hill climbing ability, and in the case of tracked vehicles, turning speed.
@neiloflongbeck5705
@neiloflongbeck5705 Жыл бұрын
But isn't torque defined as being proportional to horsepower divided by rpm?
@amerigo88
@amerigo88 Жыл бұрын
The formula is: torque = horsepower x 5,252 divided by the revolutions per minute. Torque and horsepower are therefore two sides of the same coin. As someone commented, it's really about the tank's transmission. However, if it were my WW2 tank, I would prefer fast acceleration from a standstill (escaping a surprise attack, an incoming bombardment, etc ) over a high top speed that a 1940s suspension will likely make a miserable experience for the fleshy creatures operating the tank. It all goes back to the true output of the tank engine and choices in tradeoff between torque and hp. Reporting every tank in terms of its horsepower output without reference to either rpm or torque doesn't tell us the whole story. A focus on hp alone is just a convention that has been widely accepted among historians.

Good point. The Germans did reuse most French tanks they captured, including the S35 and Char B1 Bis. However they did not like the 1-man turret tanks, and so many of those were converted to SPGs or TDs. Probably one of the main reasons the Germans did not keep S35s and B1s in production was their high price, but idk for sure

I put it down to issues revolving around cost. Of production and single man turrets on top of The overall poor quality of Tanks Like The H35. While the Char B1 wasn't much better and the S35 being equivalent to later models of Panzer III. Basically meaning thay captured vehicles were. Mostly converted used for internal policing with occupational garrisons or Given to. Minor axis allies as they did not fit German tank Doctrine. Though they did keep French factories active but they were used mostly to produce utility vehicles and engines and other components for other German Vehicles.

I still say that it was the weakness of Chamberlain's policies in appeasement that actually allowed the invasion of Poland and subsequently The Low Countries and France. Letting Germany take Austria was one thing but just letting them walk into Czechoslovakia was another. That Czech arms industry actually added real capability to the Nazi war dreams. They couldn't have done anything without all that loot and resources. I do blame the Czechs too they treated their Slovak partners like shit and after spending massive amounts on building a military just gave up without a protest. Had they fought back immediately the French would have come and then the Brits as well the war would have either never happened at all and Hitler disgraced and deposed soon enough or the War would have started in 38' way way too early for Germany to really be successful and they would have had to sue for a way out after being unable to take over Czechoslovakia.

Hello narrator. Please don't use Britain and England interchangeably. Unless you are referring to a specific place, you say Britain or the U.K. '(A Vz.38) was actually shipped to Britain' *_or_* '(A Vz.38) was actually shipped to Bovington, England.' If in doubt however, you can always default to Britain. London for example, _is_ in Britain _and_ England, whereas Edenborough is in Britain but _not_ England.
