Hack: when applying liquids (alcohol, vinegar, goo gone, etc) use paper coffee filters instead of paper towels… they are made so they don’t leave behind any lint or small paper fuzz and works great

When applying vinyl to any non porous surface… spritz with a little water (distilled water works best). This allows the vinyl to move around a bit before sticking so you can place it perfectly… then using your fingers or burnishing tool you squeegee the water out from behind your vinyl. This removes the water, prevents air bubbles, and is far more forgiving when placing your design. Set it aside for several hours while the little bit of moisture dries and your design is well stuck. This is called the wet method and is a variation that professionals use when applying designs to glass doors and cars. You can search KZbin for tons of examples. This was a game changer for me!

Mat cleaning hack: I use these silicon scrubby things I found at the dollar tree. They are found in the body care, makeup, and baby care areas… basically silicon with little nubbies on it… they have been called reusable washcloths, brush cleaners, and face cleaners. Any style will work. I then have a spray bottle with water and a teaspoon of dawn dish soap that I shake up. I spray my mat and use the silicon scrubby to gently wash my mat. I rinse with water and let air dry. This returns the stickiness and never leaves any fuzz or residue behind. LOVE my mats again!

Although the ‘hack’ to find the center of the shirt is a great one… the easiest way to find the center of your design is to put a small rectangle/square into your design (not touching any of the design itself) and center it to your design prior to cutting. I would fold and press, then use marking chalk (the kind that is found in the sewing section of fabrics stores) to lightly mark the fold to make it easy to see (this mark will brush/wash away and will have no effect on the HTV adhesion). Now simply line up your design using the small square you centered with your design and press the HTV liner down with your hands… once most of your design is sticking to the correct place on your shirt, use your finger or weeding tool to peel off the small square. This takes less time and is super easy… it actually takes longer to explain than to do it.

One hack I do that I never see mentioned is that I like to weed a whole bunch of things then apply the transfer tape to all, then cut out individual images. So for example with vinyl labels I might cut on a 12x12, weed all the labels on the 12x12, apply a 12x12 sheet of transfer tape, then cut out each label. It is faster to weed and I can also precut the materials rather than having to cut the exact size. Plus since the transfer tape exactly matches the paper backing it doesn't get stuck everywhere.
@jeanetted60742 жыл бұрын
I totally agree… and by creative placing, by angling each smaller cut in between your longer ones reduces vinyl waste and saves you a bunch of time!

I recently discovered the "manage costume materials" function, no one ever told me it existed. Using it was a game changer for me. My blade stopped cutting well on some materials. I thought I should change the knife. I learned, instead, that changing the blade pressure setting on the material I will use solved the problem. I just increase the pressure two at a time; test to see if it's working, and if it doesn't, I adjust it again. Easy!

I’ve always had a special mat aside for weeding . That way my cutting mat stays clean. I also use alcohol wipes to clean my items . I’ve tried the baby wipes with not such good results . I clean with the dish soap. Let it dry . Then i apply a piece of transfer tape to cover mat. Let it on for a few days . Then i remove the transfer tape and it’s like new. Very sticky . I then reuse the large piece of transfer tape . Another hack i do is i keep transfer backing from my htv. I then use it when i weed to put the scraps on . It works great . When it’s full, i fold it up and discard.
@brendahilburn1099 Жыл бұрын
Weeding hack! I cut a lot of small and/or delicate vinyl. If I just start weeding in the corners and pull up the vinyl, I was losing small items (i.e. dots over i's, curly Qs on letters, etc) . So I take my True control knife and cut the vinyl around the small and delicate areas. I'll use my weeder or piercing tool to remove all of the internal vinyl, for example the centers of letters like a d e o, etc. then I pull the background vinyl leaving the delicate areas to weed the places I cut around. Does that make sense. It's kind of hard to describe without pictures. I've also discovered that using the iron-on setting on my maker 3 when cutting smart vinyl gives me sharper images.

Also, the size of what you can cut it much more limited with the Cricut Joy. Hi Lynn. Just make sure that your vinyl says permanent and you can use for glasses and tumblers. You have to hand wash them though with a mild soap for them to last. Don’t throw or give away the vinyl. I would use it to decorate plain bags for gifts and many other things. You can cake incredible cards with the joy also. How did you make your Ruby Claire wording like that where it's like carved into the word? What technique would that even be called?

Hack 11 is soo what I needed. I created an image, but was unable to make. Going to give it a try while listening to the rest of these hacks.

These were all great! Thank you Tanner. I’m so glad I saw this before starting. Putting slits in the vinyl for round objects like an ornament is awesome! I also had no clue in Design Space pngs, svgs, jpeg can’t be exported….taking a screenshot is a great hack!

Wait…. Is the new window only available on computer? Or does it work on phone/ipad apps?
