Isn't music wonderful! I have been in music all of my life as both a concert artist and teacher and the more you think you know, the more you realise that you don't know. A friend of mine played this wonderful composition on pipe organ roughly 50 years ago and I still remember the emotional effect it had on me back then. Every time I hear this wonderful piece I feel so thrilled with it every time that it almost brings me to tears of joy.

In his autobiography Wagner explains that he wrote this piece initially as a welcome event for the king of Saxony returning from summer vacations, when he was royal conductor in Dresden. He made use of this contacts in Dresden and managed to have about 300 to 400 singers (Wagner himself being one of them) and many other local musicians. He mentions that many singers and elements of the orchestra were so bad that to disguise them he had the idea of having the choir march so that the king would not hear the weakest ones except from a distance. The overture, which has the same leitmotiv as this pilgrim's chorus, was written last. And the voices in this part were also added later, after the release of the opera was received coldly by the public.
