Thanks for doing this, I've had a pair of Stratfords in my studio for about 40 years, been very happy with them and they still do the job - can't say that about most tech from that period. I can understand the need to keep the screws tight but could you explain the benfit of rotating the bass drivers?

The plaster isn't silly. Mixing engineers did kind of the same with the Yamaha NS-10M studio monitors, using tissue paper over the tweeters to get a better balanced treble. If it works it works.
@socksumi3 жыл бұрын
The problem with the NS-10 wasn't the tweeter; it was the woofer which had a two large resonant peaks in the midrange.

Kelvin you should do a video of all the hi fi tweaks you have used since your childhood. If hanging turntables from the ceiling and putting yours socks over the tweeters is anything to go by I'm sure it would be very entertaining. Love your passion 👍😉😂

I love the way you describe audio and this review is a really good example. I feel like I completely understand what animal this is now. This sounds like a great choice to throw a party. They may not satisfy your average snobbish audiophile but they sure get more people on the dance floor than your average high end speaker. (The same goes for Akai amps by the way, at least the AM2400 I know). By the way, I also think this is a great candidate / starting point for modding. Add braces to the cabinet, replace the cheesy 80's filter components with good capacitors and air coils and all the harshness could well be gone without any loss of the dynamics.

Tannoy loudspeakers are what audiophiles living outside of the UK consider a prime example of the so-called British Sound that places prime importance on pace, rhythm and timing. BTW, using a 10 watt resistor between 1 to 4 ohms connected in series with the tweeter is a better sounding method - to my ears - of taming down excessive treble than band aids and socks over the tweeters.

I am beginning to believe manufacturers went to vented speaker designs because they could save on cabinet construction and filling costs that way. I like the idea of tweaking old speakers to get some better sound out of them.

The lack of "wadding" was probably from Tannoy. Since the 80s it's been commonplace for manufacturers to fill with lesser amounts insulation to increase the overall efficiency. The speaker will likely sound smoother and less coloured with more insulation but at the expense of a couple of a DB or two of efficiency.

In general vented speakers the port box size and woofer are tuned have no or little insulation,has to breathe. Sealed boxes are filled with insulation material to simulate a larger box volume for the bass.
@johnsweda29993 жыл бұрын
Yes I've got those speakers and they don't have much fill, natural wool is a good idea some surgical tape on the woofer because they're plastic that might help, cut it around the dust cap 2-inch surgical tape. £105 I got mine from the dump for £10 I think it would make good mtm would be perfect with the horn in the middle to the side, I did make some changes to the horn and you can bring up the top end roloff

I think Tannoy replaced the Stratford with the Mercury M20....and what do you know, they ditched the horn tweeter for a soft dome tweeter...the rest of the design was along the same principles. To be fair, most horn loaded tweeters can be edgy.....try changing the listening height...also I find horns are usually better with the grills left on to tame them, think of the grill as a giant plaster.....

Hi Kelvin, great review as usual! I've a very similar Tannoy T115 and I use it with a NAD 3130 (same age more or less). If you compare it with modern speakers, it seems to have the "loudness" always on... good bass, a bit sharp highs and mids a little behind... but that's the magic! A very enjoyble sound. Cheers form Firenze Italy 😉

Horns usually require space to perform at their very best. It's the way that they spread sound exponentially within the room. Same way that a bull horn helps your voice cover a longer distance outdoors.

Hello Folks. All the good replies to questions I feel like a puppy I'm so excited a bit wet the floor Kevin you keep on saying rotate the drivers also rotate left and right speaker box because usually the recording not the same level as the left or right. And let's not forget hollow hair wool. I'm wondering what kind of crossover to use what order if there's even anything on the woofer also if they forgot to add a resistor, as an capacitor is on at, Tweeter. Flat face plate no resistor plus nice win. The coat! Peerless popular and copy their plate, flip. Ride Easy

The Yamaha NS-10 began as a home speaker but became a classic recording studio monitor. It's not unusual to see the NS-10 tweeter, modified with a piece of paper towel to tame the high end as well.

I needed to lower the output of my tweeter so I made an L-Pad, just 2 resistors (one in series, one in parallel). It doesn't mess with the speaker's overall impedance and there's charts online to help you choose the correct values for the dB drop you're after...but a plaster is easier 😂
