As per vedas in the beginning, before any creation happened there was only one entity called SadaShiv. Sada means eternal and Shiva means auspiciousness or blissfulness, it is a state of beingness. SadaShiv was All That IS, and ALL That IS NOT. There was nothing else other than this. This was the world of absolute where there was no OTHER thing. The whole of creation is an idea of that supreme consciousness where it thought of creating something other that it, a reference point or reflection where it can look up on itself with awe and wonder. This was the creation of duality. Thus a part separated from Sadashiv and is called Adi Shakti. There were called Shiva and AdiShakti or Purush and Prakruthi or Yin and Yang or the divine father and mother(jaganmaatha) of whole of creation. They are at the same time different and ONE. Whatever AdiShakti experience, is ultimately an experience of Shiva himself. Infact, the life experience of every being in this unierse is an experience of Shiva. The whole physical and metaphysical creation is a manifestation of this shakti. Shiva is also called the Saakshi or the observer and Shakti the "Observed". From Shiva emanates Vishnu, the consciousness for preserving the creation and Brahma the creator of material worlds. If you are making bread using dough, you can assume yourself as Brahma who is the intelligence on how to shape and transform the dough where as the dough itself is Shakti or energy which transforms as creation. Now Shakti is infinity that came out of infinity (Shiva) hence both are infinite energies. Each consciousness that separated from the whole is whole in itself and is in the image and likeness of the whole, which means Brahma and Vishnu has the free will of their own. From Brahma emanated Saraswathy the consciousness for knowledge ( Gyanashakti), From Vishnu emanated Lakshmi ( Ichha shakti) and Adi shakti is the kriya shakti ( the will for creation). When Sadashiv ends his dream, none of these will exist and will dissolve in it, in the reverse order of how they were created. Endless such creation cylces happens and in each creation cycle these deities keep getting created and dissolved. What ultimately remains is the sadashiv, also called the brahman. This is the essence of vedanta See the full series of Devom Kadev Mahadev. If you understand the basics of Sanathan Dharma and then explore the Mythological story of Siva, you will get to know the inner meaning of God, soul and its association with whole of creation. If you want to understand the core of Sanathan Dharma then here it is. There is a world of Absolute which holds the creation. In the beginning there was only one entity called sadShiv ( sada means eternal and Shiv means auspiciousness). Sadshiva is also termed as All that Is and All that Is Not and same is referred to as Brahman. In Nataraj posture it shows a demon Apasmara(means absence of consciousness)at the feet of Shiva which symbolically represents the All That Is Not. Sadashiv has no form and is just a consciousness. Sadashiv initiates the process of creation by separating from it Shakti and now what remains is called Shiva and Shakti ( Purush and Prakriti). When infinity is removed from infinity still infinity remains, meaning Shiv and Shakti are infinite consciousness in the image and likeness of each other and that of Sadashiv( the combined form). Both are complete and perfect. Only their function differs. Shiva remains as the observer and Shakti manifests itself as the whole of created world( the physical and metaphysical worlds). Shiv is unmanifested energy and Shakti is its manifestation. From Shiva emerges the trinity, the Vishnu and from Vishnu the Brahma. It is part of a cycle of creation, maintenance and destruction, the beginning and end being the Shiva and there are cycles within cycles and this pattern repeats in every aspects of creation( like birth and death). My analogy is if you are making bread using dough, you use dough to make bread or roti ar anything you like but the input for your creation is the dough. Similarly the brahma is the consciousness who uses the energy( manifestation of Shakti) as dough to make physical world. Every living and non living thing in this universe is made up of energy and energy al all levels has consciousness at varying levels. Even space is not empty but filled with energy. This energy of Shakti manifesting as physical world consists of 5 energy or Prana types ( Earth, Water, Ether(sky), Fire, Air pranas) which are intern made of energies of 3 frequencies called Sattava, Rajas and Tamo Gunas. Do not get confused with the name as they are named so due to some similarity in the properties of those prana and does not literally means we can make something with fire and water. The proportion of these elements in any matter attributes to its overall color and properties of the matter in its energy and physical forms. The Fire that we see has more of Fire prana hence the prana was named as fire to make up understand some of its properties as an example.Shiva is the observer and Shakti ( the creation) is the observed. Ultimately the creation and the creator is one and the same Sadashiva. There are 33 crore deities in Sanathan Dharma each representing that part of the Sadashiv who manages certain aspects of the creation. Dieties are not God but manifestations of God which is used as tools to elevate our consciousness. All of universe and all cities are there at your disposal to provide you guidance up on your request to help you transcend to next level in your spiritual journey. Shiv and Shakti is also considered as the universal divine father and mother. The creation is also called Duality and as part of creation these basic concepts were invented - Time, Space, Matter which gives you the experience of duality of separateness from God. You are one with god and at the same time separate from God. The feeling of separation is an illusion ( Maya). The duality world exists within in the absolute world simultaneously. God is one and many at the same time. We are nothing but God itself but not realizing our true self and limiting ourself due to being in the world of duality. When each soul expand its awareness and self realization then it experiences the god within. We have a conscious mind which receives feedback through senses from the external world through 5 senses which helps experiences the dual world as you go deeper to subconscious, Un conscious, super conscious and supra consciousness levels you experience oneness with whole of universe and other beings living and non living. You can find a reference of the manifestation of creation in the book " The Holy Science" by Yutheswar who is the Guru of Sri Paramahansa Yogananda. You can listen to Swami Sarvapriyananda on Advaita Vedanta . You can also watch “Devom ka dev Mahadev” TV serials ( based on ShivPurana) from very beginning to see this in mythological form. You can see that Shiva is an observer and never comes in to birth and death cycles nor does he get bounded in karmic debts. When you think about a deity that deity is parent in front of you in its energy form. God always hear you and responds to you in many ways. The question is only on who listens. All others in creation including AdiShakti has to under go the soul evolution process from complete forgetfulness to full realization and communion with God. Siva, Vishnu and Brahma are the all knowing including the past, present and future for all beings. They know one's current thoughts and how and what kind of creation that will materialize. You should understand that destiny is nothing but your own creation due to your own accumulated thoughts over a period of time ( across lifetimes). You can see in these stories they life journey to evolution where they under go lower emotions to highest form of bliss. All these deities exist in the macrocosm of the universe and the microcosm of each organism. All the deities exist in ones energy body or aura which surrounds our physical body. Once you have studied vedanta well and then watch it hen you will understand the symbolic and inner meanings, else you will see it a story book of fantasies. Knowledge is passed on in mythologies in Sanathan Dharma. Dharma is righteousness which is the ability of one to make decision on what is appropriate considering the ultimate wellness or blessings that can be provided to all involved. This cannot be defined by a set of right and wrongs and this is subjective to every one and some times personal. Righteousness is seeking of truth beyond prejudice of right or wrong. There is Dharma at personal level, national level and universal level. If you see a conflict in dharma at each of these level then the dharma at higher level supersedes. The story of Mahabharata shows how some people were adamant on personal Dharma where as they did not had the vision or aware ness on how their personal Dharma becomes an Dharma on the national and universal levels and what will be the implications of their acts. Krisha’s role was to show light on this and elevate the souls.
