I live at sea level as well.. Had a friend come to visit that lived in Colorado elev 8000.. we passed a cove and he asked what our elevation was. 1 foot. Our Washington State evergreens made him claustrophobic.

We have had breakfast at Michaels we weren't impressed. But we will stop in to try the cinnamon roll. We have been told it is out of this world good.

We love Taos! Have flown out there a couple times and took kids skiing one year. Altitude is pretty serious, takes a couple (few) days to acclimate. You missed the Earth Ships, probably my favorite, unique thing about Taos... especially for us with “off the grid” mind sets. You don’t get to tour every house there, but you can tour a full house, and see all the systems they use to collect, purify and pump water, grey water, black, etc, like your RV! You could definitely spend a lot of time around that area.

In hindsight, I'm kicking myself for missing the Earth Ships. We met another AS couple in our campground that had done the tour the day before and said you didn't get to see much, which was matching up with the reviews we read online. We know another couple that rented one to stay in, maybe that would be a cool way to explore them. Regardless, it just gives us a reason to go back to Taos 😊

We're also Floridians and did that same hike. Very breath taking, literally. I should have planned better because I tried climbing to Mt Wheeler, which is over 13,000 ft., but in the same trail, and I couldn't make it. Got too late of a start but I was sooooo out of breath before I had to turn around. Love Taos though in winter and summer. I need to go back and conquer Wheeler one day. In fact your videos were almost on the same track as ours this year.
@EmbracingDetours

Oh yes, I saw the cutoff for Mt Wheeler as I dragged myself down the trail huffing and puffing! I'm seriously impressed you felt well enough at that point to even attempt it. 13k feet is no joke!! At one point I thought it would be cool to hike the tallest peaks in each state... Then reality set in!! 😂 But I'm with you, I want to learn from these experiences, get in better shape, better acclimate myself to the altitude, and come back and conquer these things that beat me. Taos was great, I had the most amazing Italian dish at a little hole in the wall restaurant that I'm still dreaming about. If nothing else, I must go back for that. And to see the Earthships, which I'm bummed we missed. Ok, there appears to be a lot of reasons to go back to Taos! Thanks for watching!! 😁

Oh man, you guys. I sure hope you won't take this the wrong way, but I worried about you doing that high altitude wilderness hike. I couldn't tell from your appearance how well equipped you were, so if you did your homework, don't pay attention to this. It's just that I know from experience that hypothermia and dehydration are real dangers in places like that. It can snow heavily at any time, even in August, and if you do not have the right clothing, and you're wet from sweating, you can get very dangerously cold before you know it during a snow storm, and if you get find you're thirsty, you are probably already dehydrated, which can also be deadly quickly. So if you guys read up on preparation first, and had everything you needed, just ignore this comment, but if by chance you didn't, please please please learn about wilderness hiking before you do it again, and know how to get ready. I love your enthusiasm and your videos. I just want you to be safe. The Rockies are not like Florida!

No offense taken at all. We are definitely not in FL anymore and that hike was a valuable learning experience. We always keep water, a hydration pack and jackets in the van, but when we got out of the van the weather was nice and warm and everything we read about the hike said it was easy, so I just brought my water bottle and no jackets. Lesson learned. Thank you so much for the concern, we will definitely prepare better for future hikes!

I'm glad you were okay with my comment. Jackets still wouldn't have been enough in heavy snow, and blue jeans are also horrible. As I used to tell people when I volunteered at White Sands Nat'l Mon, drink at least twice as much water as you think you need. A lot! I hope you will research wilderness hike prep if you decide to do it again. Your beautiful dog also looked thirsty :-)! Safe and happy travels to you.

Please, when you switch to music from speech the music increases to a point that is way too loud. I turn it down and then when you start talking I have to turn it back up. Very uncomfortable and irritating.

We apologize for that, we know it’s been an issue in the past and have (hopefully) resolved it in our newer videos. Unfortunately, we aren’t able to go back and fix the old ones, KZbin won’t let us re-upload without loosing all our previous views.

Guys, elevation sickness is very real and kills people every year that push themselves past their safe limit. You went from 0 elevation above sea level to over 11000 feet, without acclimating your body to the lower oxygen levels, above 8000 can be fatal if you don't descend immediately. Not trying to judge or troll, this is only my 3 time watching you guys, and was really enjoying your vlogs until this one so clearly pointed out your complete disregard for your wife when she began showing signs of a potentially fatal illness. Talking about how it's so beautiful it was worth doing it. When she wanted to lay down, that is THE WRONG thing to do and a sign that she is very ill.THE second she showed symptoms, you should have immediately began descending and not worry about content for your vlog. Anyway, that selfish, uncaring action was my determining factor to not sub to your site. I only tell you all this in hopes you will maybe make her more important that views and likes. Safe travels

Yikes, we honestly had no idea altitude sickness could be fatal. We had slowly been working ourselves up from sea level over the past 6 weeks on our way north through NM, we had been around 7,000' in Santa Fe for 2 weeks before moving to Taos. Do you know how long it normally takes to acclimate? It was an honest mistake and we appreciate you informing us of the dangers. We'll definitely take it more seriously if it happens again. Please know that TJ is a very caring partner and would never intentionally put me in harms way. You may notice by the end of the video he was carrying literally everything, both dogs and had given me his sweater. As you can see, we are a super young channel and a couple of inexperienced Floridians just figuring things out as we make our way across the country. We respect everyone's decision to follow or not follow our channel. That said, I'm truly saddened to hear this rookie mistake has been the deciding factor in your not subscribing. We literally do a happy dance for each new subscriber. I wish you the best and, again, thank you for your concerns. Bri

@@EmbracingDetours So, the above response is totally unnecessary and all emotion. Now, with that said let's address some things. I have over thirty years of experience in the backcountry, hiking, backpacking on multiple extended trips and countless day hikes all in Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana. Am I an expert? Not by any means. Do I have experience above 8000 feet? Lots. The very first thing I noticed was that you had a head cold. This can severely impact your ability to perform at altitude. The second thing I observed was that you were mouth breathing. That tells me right away you are fighting for oxygen because your nose is plugged. The pressure in your sinuses can also cause dizziness and make you feel tired more than normal. Your body is fighting infection. Nose breathing is always better. My thinking is that you were experiencing the combination of both altitude and a head cold. Your first question was how long does it normally take to acclimate? Normally 3-5 days at one elevation to adjust for that elevation. Your altitude headache should subside by that time and you should feel reasonably normal doing normal things. Going higher could possibly require more time, but it is not always a concrete rule. Climbers of Mount Everest take a very long time. One thing that increases at altitude is dehydration. You should be consuming approximately 64 ounces of water doing absolutely nothing (I use orange powered Gatorade in my water, it tastes so much better and it replenishes my electrolytes) or more depending on your activity. My family carries their own water when hiking in their own backpack and their own foul weather gear with some food. According to the Wilderness Medical Society, your body loses water through respiration at high altitude twice as fast as it does at sea level. I measure my hydration level two to three days prior to any high altitude high exertion planned activity. Mouth breathing increases your rate of transfer of moisture out of your body compared to nose breathing. Now let's add some sweating to the equation. You should also increase your carb intake. Third, cotton kills in the mountains. It loses all insulating properties when wet including sweat. No blue jeans, cotton t-shirts, underwear or socks. You need to be wearing all synthetic clothing including socks. It has insulating properties when wet but also wicks moisture away from your skin reducing convection. Synthetic under shirt, outer shirt, synthetic jacket for warmth, synthetic pants and lastly a rain/wind jacket. Fourth, you should shorten your stride going uphill by doing a rest step or kick step. I do it and slow down my pace as well. It conserves my output and reduces the lactic acid buildup in my leg muscles. Now, do I think you were in trouble on this trip? Not immediately. What typically occurs is that you become tired, can't think straight, start walking with a more lazy gait, my head is pounding, you trip over the dog, make a misstep, twist an ankle or knee and now you are in a pickle. You can't walk and someone has to leave you to go get help because you don't have cell service. The weather turns for the worst and the temperature drops. What started out as a sunny day from the trailhead turns into freezing rain or snow and you are stuck on the side of the trail waiting for help. You said "he was carrying literally everything...and had given me his sweater". See where this goes quickly? Please take all of this in stride...see what I did there? I crack me up.

This is what I love about 'tour of ___' videos. Dopey humans mispronouncing everything, insulting the local cuisine and completely misunderstanding the culture. Glad you got altitude sickness. Don't come back.
