About Simple Little Life:
This channel has sort of turned (inadvertently) into a knife making channel. But the original idea behind what we wanted it to be is this description below:
Videos on our journey to homesteading. With a recent purchase of a little piece of the Alberta prairie, we're looking to sell our nice suburban home in search of a more meaningful life beyond chasing the "American dream" working for some big company and making someone else rich. It's not about the money, it's about getting the most value from the work I do to improving the life of my family.
Some preparedness, DIY, building quality things with your hands, guns, gear, and outdoor exploration.

Skip to 5 mins..! Only works if you’ve got access from other end if it’s OPEN to allow to these tools to be inserted, but if you’re cutting threads it won’t work as you’ll need to go into reverse if there’s allowed length...

Don't be so defensive J. All knowledge is useful. Quality tools are expensive but cheap tools can cost you more in the long run. I recently inherited some seriously old school tools from a 94 year old uncle and TTT has helped solve a few mysteries. Great to see your smiling face back online dude. Thanks for sharing.

Haha, we use to have a tool guy that would drive site to site. They were more than happy to give you "credit" because the money would come right out of your check... All of the sudden your eyes get bigger than your pockets... You don't realize you're on the hook for a long time.. I'm still guilty of buying a lot of tools that i don't necessarily need, but then again, when you need them, they pay for themselves... Great video, take it easy...(I agree about the 1 tool, you helped my decision to buy the carbide file guide & I love it!!!)

I've made a DIY version with the same basic principal by using small pins that fit down between the flutes of the broken tap and then wrapping a small wire around those and a new tap (like a splint). Sometimes it works like a charm, sometimes it's a Clown Donkey rodeo. Mostly though, my EDM machine gets the stubborn broken taps as long as I can fit the piece in the tank. :-)

Hi Jeramy, I have a tip you will just love to get a broken bolt or anything lodged in a threaded hole. I use this method all the time or I use to. Get yourself a few LEFT TWISTING DRILLS OR BACKWARDS RUNNING IN THE NORMAL SENSE. Hit the center bolt or whatever with center drill then put left hand drill in a hand held drill with a 2 way mode be ready to back up the drill as the drill catches and pulls broken part out. Takes all of 5 seconds or less. Hope Kim is watching this. Drills range from a few bucks to sets found all over eBay, Amazon other more valuable tool companies. Used this method with excellent results no broken bits yet.. have a good one Sir..
@woss321
@woss321 6 жыл бұрын
That's fine with bolts but taps are normally much harder than the drill bit, making them near impossible to drill... spark eroding is a good way but very specialist and expensive.

Good point I did not consider since I rarely if ever broke a tap. But yes your right. That would be a horse of a different color. Take it easy on the taps but it happens ..

Yeah I am actually planning the next TTT on those reverse drill bits. I have some that came with a bolt extractor set. Use a reverse drill to drill the right sized hole for the bolt extractor, and 80% you don't even need the extractor👍

@@woss321 if your trying to get a broken tap out of aluminum there's a very easy way assuming it's a small part and your able to submerge the part in a heated solution of battery acid and McCormick Alum (potassium aluminum sulfate). basically mix the Alum with the battery acid, submerge part in solution after heating it up (forget temperature recommended) and basically wait for the battery acid/Alum solution to dissolve the broken tap. it won't harm the aluminum at all but it may discolor it a bit. method works great. used this method a few time breaking off 1.5mm and 2mm taps inside of aluminum parts on my R/C vehicles. took about a hr for a 2mm tap to dissolve in solution so times may very depending on size of tap. not sure if this method is safe for any other type of materials other than aluminum but know if you try it on steel you'll end up dissolving the whole piece plus the tap.

Push the fingers as far as you can into the broken tap. Then slide the collar down, put a wrench on it, and twist the fingers into a pretzel shape. If you can put the part on your mill table, use a straight flute, spade drill bit made of carbide. Use a little tap magic, and peck drill the center out. No chance of breaking the drill bit like end mills want to do. If you cannot mount the part on your mill table, tig weld a tab onto the broken tap, and back it out with a wrench. Most broken taps just laugh at those little finger tools.

I have some experience with using these tools; sometimes they work great and like Jeremy says save you untold hours of pain and stress, other times you break the little fingers and make the mess worse.These tap extractors are available individually, I bought mine for No 6 taps from Brownell's. If you buy one for small taps, do yourself a favor and get extra fingers, they are a bit delicate.

Just because you learn about a tool doesn't mean you have to go buy it right? Then could be something that you just follow away and a later on and go. Hey, I remember this tool that does this job really well and then you can go buy it. But if you're like some people you'll go through and watch this. And oh that's a cool tool and then 5 years later when you actually need the tool you forget that it exists and you go dang it. I wish they made a tool for this

Mine broke at an angle and I noticed you mentioned one should push the middle part all the way down before moving the bottom part. Should I try to file the sticking tip before or there's some kind of grip on the middle part so as long there's contact it should be ok? My concern is if I use a file to level the tip of the broken of tap I would possibly further lock the tap by pushing it back and forth.

A lot of times you can melt a tap with a torch, the tap melts at a lower temp than most steel and usually won’t damage the thread . If it’s a engine block or something where warpage can occur this is a great tool . I have one 3/4 inch tap extractor, it costed 50 bucks . I wouldnt buy a whole set unless you make 200K a year because they cost a lot and you won’t use it much .

Sometimes a broken tap isn't user error. can also be the use of the wrong type of tap. I guess in away using wrong tool in first place can count as human error. Lol. taps your showing is the style I have and sometimes those style taps are not practical in some situations. say that because taps your showing (and what most of us have) cause the chips to stay onside hole therefore getting trapped inside the flutes causing tap to bind up in hole your trying to cut. if you was to use something like a spiral flute tap you'll see the chips your cutting end up being forced out the bottom of hole rather than clogging up inside the tap itself. obviously spiral flute taps will only benefit you if your able to tap straight through the material but spiral flute taps can be used with a drill/drillpress whereas you try to use a drill with tap your showing your gonn snap it off pretty much immediately. trying to make a file jig as we speak and tapping holes with a 1/4-20 in 3/4" thick bar stock that's hardened to 35hrc and needless to say I got 3 out of 15 holes tapped (with style your showing) and broke tap off half way through the 4th hole. tap was a brand new snap on tap from the 76 piece tap die set (model # TDTDM500A) and in all honesty I hate this set I have. they work great for aluminum and softer metals but suck for anything thicker than 1/4 steel. I ended up spending $28 for 1 German made Guhring spiral flute tap and was able to tap out the other 11 holes faster than I did the first 3. did 2 holes by hand then tried using on a drill and surprisingly it cut right through like butter. now I need to get the broken tap out of the 4th hole but can't see investing $100 to $150 on a tap extractor set that'll ill use maybe once a year if that. had a machinist tell me you can reshape a masonry drill bit and use it to drill out broken tap and not screw up hole (said it works best with a bit guide) so gonna try that first and see what happens. if that don't work it looks like I'll be in for a bit of a fight. Lmao.

I've only broken two taps, and I ended up just throwing the entire piece away and completely starting over each time. My question is, how exactly do you get the tool in the flutes if there's not an open end on the opposite side of the tap entry point? I feel like that would only work if it's a hole that goes completely through the piece. Or am I just way off on the operating procedure here?
@Simplelittlelife
@Simplelittlelife 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, if you broke the shank of the tap off you've be hooped but usually, I find the taps break off somewhere in the flute area. I've always found I have the flutes exposed to help grip them to twist them back out. 👍

Wow, tell me you broke a spiral flute tap? I just bought 1 1/4-20 spiral flute tap for $28 ( German made Guhring tap) and it worked like a charm. busted off a standard tap (like one shown in this video) after only getting 3 holes (out of 15 holes) done through 3/4" thick bar stock and the spiral flute tap went right through that 3/4" steel like it was butter. after doing 2 by hand I decided to use a hand drill and it ripped right through the material with the drill. was told by a machinist that you can reshape end of masonry bit and use it to drill out broken taps. actually found a video on KZbin using that method and seemed to work extremely well. know your comment is 3yrs old now but hopefully that helps for future endeavors.
