Oh... I love that Janus... it's like an "instant Throbbing Gristle" machine.... and joysticks.... effects need more joysticks! These videos where you talk about your techniques are also brilliant gear reviews... because you're showing equipment being used as part of your creative process... a lot of "real" gear reviews leave me thinking "OK, it's got X, Y, Z features... but how can you REALLY use it"......................

Now I understand tape loops. Thanks. Beautiful sound. Subd. I think I have seen the C45 channel but will check it out.

You couldn't be more inspirational if you tried! It's incredible how much effort and creativity you put into something that could have been just another mixtape. Always the one to take the high road I see! This came at a good time too, I was planning on doing a cassette on my first album I did a year ago and it might be something you could work with. What's the preferred way to get in touch on that subject? Also, I have a question about tapes. Sorry if it's a little on the obvious side, but I have been getting into tapes as of the last couple of years and I'm a complete beginner on using them in a creative way. If I were to use a microcassette (or any other cassette), how many times can I rewrite the tape? From what I've gathered it has some variables to it and it's preferred if you don't, but a ballpark estimation (or any information) could be very useful information! Thank you once again, you have my favorite channel on KZbin.
@Hainbach7 жыл бұрын
+Ellotus13 thanks a lot! Hainbach101(at) gmail.com is the easiest way. You can rewrite the tape as long as it sounds good. You will hear degradation creeping in slowly, less highs less bass more noise. Depending on what you want that might be a good thing. I am hesitant to shoot for a ballpark number, as it varies from tape to tape, but at about seven rewrites it might get a little bit funky. Some of the loop tapes I have are so worn it's super nice.

HAINBACH Thanks for the answers! I'll probably be in touch about the tape next month.

Hi Hainbach, nice video. I reckomend that you make a MANUAL WALKMAN to go with this. Good for short sounds or soundscapes. The idea is to pull of the "tape mover", glue it to a small crank and play it by hand. Good fun.

Thank you very much for sharing your technique, herr Hainbach! Can I ask, will tone controls on Field Kit FX work for this? Also, I noticed that you like to use delay pedal as your end of chain, like Timeline or Thyme. Do you just use delay or add reverb later? Thank you and have a nice day! You are a never ending source of inspiration for many of us.
@Hainbach11 ай бұрын
Thank you! For these I mostly use delay, as reverb can wash out things to much with all the tape noise. The tone control on the FX works too

@Hainbach Echoing several of these comments in theirs and my appreciation for the inspiring content you always create. Do you have tips for eliminating the blank space in a looped recording? At first I thought it was due to where the tape has been joined together to create the loop... but I tested o. My 4 track... and seems like the blank space is more where I begin and end the recording no due to where the looped cassettes I purchased have been seamed together. I’ve tried a few things like using pause instead of hitting stop during recording... and have tied on a variety of cassette recorders. Any tips, or should I just accept it and work around it?

Unplug the power.

HAINBACH I put tape over the eraser head on my cassette recorder... now no more blank spot in my loops. I think it was erasing the tape a milliseconds before the recording head... and so when I stopped recording apparently I was hearing the blank space between the eraser head and the recording one.
@V3xxe4 жыл бұрын
@@justFUNdimples That's precisely the issue. One way I've got around it lately is recording what I want to loop on the tape beforehand, THEN cutting the loop. If it's just a drone signal this works well.

I'm a big fan of Boards of Canada and always appreciated not just the music, but the way they can find the great atmosphere in the most unexpected sound. Sound the most producers would not even consider - like that bit on the Sanyo. I have the same feeling with your music every video. The beginning of the C45 is just mesmerising.

This was great and super helpful in terms of pushing me to integrate tape with my euroack system. How wide is the pitch control on the Marantz? There is a pmd222 locally I'm looking at picking up, which I assume is very like your 221.
@Hainbach7 жыл бұрын
+Rich oh, it's very wide! But not as far as the Walkman, that can go to complete sludge.
@IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIX7 жыл бұрын
Cool, thanks. I'm picking up the pmd222 tomorrow, should be fun to see how it pairs and compares with my beloved Phonogene and Morphagene. Do you have any recommendations of which cassettes to use for creating short loops and where to get them?

You need to hack the DC motor for external input. Google "pitch mod walkman".
