Aha! 😍 Absolutely fascinating, Hainbach! 👍 I was inspired by some of your magnetic tape explorations myself when I produced "Traum Schimmern" in a way similar to what you're doing here - I produced all of the simulated magnetic tape effects digitally in the DAW. I doubt if you have time to listen to it, but if you did I'd like to know what you think. P.S. I enjoyed the way you degraded the video here to match the audio, quite clever, and I wouldn't mind you explaining more about the video process you used. Thank you!! 👽

I can't stress enough how much I appreciate this. I don't have any kind of reel-to-reel tape machine, the funds to get one, or the space to keep it, so thanks so much for giving a possible entry point for digital disintegration. Makes me wonder what other ways one can digitally whittle an audio file down to nothing--bad mp3 compression, perhaps?

The idea of digital loop destruction is really interesting and well executed, too! When read the title I thought of the sort of effects you get from mp3-style data compression like pre-echo and an "underwater" sound. I wonder if there's a way to implement those effects…

I've tried this in Reaktor, where I had one loop of "zeros" slowly being added to until it was all "ones", and then using this loop to adjust the volume of a different, audio sample loop. Unlike destruction, which has a clear sense of progress and a clear sense of ending, with "restruction" (or maybe "construction") it is harder for the ear to know when it's complete. I suspect this is because the ear fills in gaps based on the earliest bits of sound, and so when they get filled in, it's not that different, I think? But this may be a limitation as well of the audio loops I was using, which are urban field recordings, not clean musical phrases. I should pick up this idea again... In case anyone's interested, for a Survey of Music Technology class I did a very different take on this idea of digital destructive loops, where whole notes are dropped, short audio dropouts are added, and tiny bits of hiss are added. You can hear it at: soundcloud.com/stochastic-telegraph/disintegrationforloops-1-1
@kavokei13373 жыл бұрын
@@MahlenMorris you really *should* pick up that idea again!

Entropic decay can only be reversed by the application of additional structuring energy, which will inherently create new structure rather than retrieving any entropically lost structure. You're asking Hainbach to be Maxwell's Demon! But it's always interesting to contemplate if and how processes might be reversed, so I see where you're coming from.

I love your appreciation of the outcome of your experiments! Straight to the heart.......Once I tried some digital looping and it ended up giving very strange sounds. In logic pro you can use the "tape delay" plug in to make a loop and instead of getting feedback it will(over time) completely morph into some hi pitched digital madness.This video makes me somehow appreciate this.

A most beautiful experiment, would be to repeat something similar to this, and re-record the resulting, slowly decomposing output, then apply a similar palette of extremely slow and convoluted reverbs and delays of your choice/preference, either in the box, virtual, or hardware effects. Just keep recycling and layering and re-destroying until the end point of each full cycle sounds totally different from the beginning. The possibilities are endless and exciting.

Beautiful! It has a Minecraft kinda vibe to it. Vast, nostalgic, low res. The concept also reminds me to the work of The Caretaker. What if you reapplied the oxide dust to the tape and them played it back? Would it even be recognizable at the end?
@tezeta37253 жыл бұрын
It would just bury everything under the noise floor most likely
@handwriting88043 жыл бұрын
@@tezeta3725 probably, never know until someone tries it.
@tezeta37253 жыл бұрын
Well thats true, but you can make a pretty good guess if you know how magnetic tape works. In this case I'm fairly certain that reaplying the dust would just add more noise because you would be putting the dust back in a totally random order. The magnetic information you're adding back to the tape would be totally jumbled and it would be read as noise. It would essentially be like putting the tape back into its original state before anything was recorded on it. There might be a bit of a signal still from whatever was left on the tape after the destruction loop, but it most likely would be extremely quiet compared to all the random information you just added back.
@associativemicrosemantics39303 жыл бұрын
I have created a simple but nice-sounding tapeloop algorithm. It already has a destruction function that is applied during rendering but currently it does not change the loop itself. I guess I'll add new destruction algorithms that gradually destroy the loop itself. Maybe some physical modelling stuff.
@joelkulesha82843 жыл бұрын
I'd love to see this idea but with video tape! Maybe trying to shoot a music video with a camcorder and run that through some kinda destruction loop if you can with a VCR
@xibalbaNOW3 жыл бұрын
Tough with a VCR as the tape loads at the heads at the top of the tape transport rather than at the bottom as with cassettes. But you can Deffo destroy the tape a little before it goes in. An easier way of getting video effects is to play with circuit bend video processing gear. Check out Tachyons+ and BMPC

I've done it by removing the front of the VCR and cutting off the top of the VHS, Very finicky though, and difficult to destruct artistically.

What is missing from this is the gradual decay of analog; that could be maybe done better with another bit depth and samplerate. What sounds best in my opinion is the "random" numbers in samplerate - it kind of breaks the logic of the conversion algorithm. For example SP1200 had 26.04 kHz and 12 bit. That is weird man and quite wonderful. What irks me about 8bit 11khz is the "gate" effect of it - so what will remain is the dithering noise at some point, but since it is 8bit it will gate that effect instead of letting it bloom (like it did on tape). I did multiple projects where we pushed samples from an MPC into an SP1200 and back into MPC just for what it did to the sound . I also had a workflow once of doing loop destruction in cooledit... Multiple passes of different sample conversion and styles to get it where I wanted. 16bit -> 12bit random KHZ setting -> 10bit random KHZ setting-> back to 16bit 22,5 khz. If there was to be a gradual fade per conversion pass (dry to wet) I think you might get a similar, albeit digital (smoother) result that you did earlier. There is quite a wonderful world of digital conversion that is uglier but smoother than the 8bit. I love these videos, really made me think about this stuff. Still wondering why there is not a plugin for the ADDA of different samplers.

Hello Hainbach, I am a huge fan. Another great video. I have a question and am wondering if you can help. I am trying to slow down drum sounds and get a sound to them similar to the way you can switch a 45rpm record to 33rpms on a turntable. The slower drums really provide a fatter and “heavier” flavor that I love. Naturally, I have tried using DAW’s to slow down the samples but you obviously can’t achieve the same character. Apart from creating your own vinyl, do you have a method you might recommend where I have the control over analog pitch? Perhaps dictaphone, multi-track tape recorder, finding pitch control on a secondhand tape deck??? Your thoughts are appreciated. Thank you so much for your time.
