You make it look so easy. Took me 4 hours, but I got it done. Thanks for the instructions.

Haha, thanks David! I’ve had a lot of practice :) And I still screw it up from time to time. Using 3/4” or 1” Super 88 is definitely easier than the 1.5” size.

Thanks! Very helpful. I had thought that taping was much more complicated than it turns out to be. (Though I suspect that your experience makes it look slightly easier than it than it will be for a beginner...)

Mike Vande Bunt You’re welcome! The biggest suggestion I have for someone starting out with the taping thing is to use narrower (.75” or 1”) Super 88 tape. It’s MUCH easier to work with!

Does this work on non-tunable bodhrans? I just bought a 14" one, there's not much of a collar so would I do the 2nd method you show with 3/4" tape? Its hard to find the 1.5" online unless you buy $50 worth. Very informative video!

Hey there! I would probably go with 3/4” Super 88 rather than the 1.5” tape anyway, both for the reason you mentioned and also because it’s MUCH easier to work with. I would try and overlap the collar even if it’s small if you can, as the tape will have a better chance of staying put. You can always try method 2 and see if that works, and if you like the sound better.

Very good explanation! I'm not super skilled in Bodhran, but I'm in the process of building one. I have used plasti-dip on mesh heads for my drumset setup to give them a bit more life/tone - I'm thinking about using plasti-dip on the Bodhran instead of tape. Have you ever tried it?
@HeyItsMattBell3 жыл бұрын
Hey there @Rhythm House Drums! You could definitely try plasti-dip...it might be tough to get a uniform thickness around the head, but it’s worth a try! If you do end up doing it, please let me know how it goes!

Hello from Turkey:) can I tape my thin shell bodhran too? Or is it just for the deep shell bodhrans? I am beginner and I have 18 inch non-tuneable bodhran and I want to get slightly better tones, will it change the way is sounds?
@HeyItsMattBell4 жыл бұрын
@Sude Mizrak Hi there! Yes, you can tape the thinner shell Bodhrán as well. The big secret is that deeper shells do not get a “bigger” or “deeper” bass sound. It’s actually the opposite. Taping any diameter and depth of Bodhrán will definitely change the sound. You may like it more, or you might not dig what it does. Definitely try it and see!

Matt Bell On Drums I will definitely try it. Thanks a lot for your reply and these infos!

What was used before 3M Tape?
@HeyItsMattBell Жыл бұрын
The process of taping Bodhráns started pretty much with Seamus O’Kane and his drums around 1970. So, relatively speaking, it’s a fairly “new” idea. A cursory google search told me that electrical tape as we know it was patented in 1946…by 3M.

@@HeyItsMattBell So, it seems before that they let the drum sing on it's own.
@HeyItsMattBell Жыл бұрын
@@oldmanfromscenetwentyfour8164 Seamus was one of the pioneers of using much thinner, more flexible goatskins that had been treated to be used on Lambeg drums. The “older style” heads like on Charlie Byrne’s Bodhrans were much thicker, and the higher overtones were not nearly as pronounced, so tape was not as often used (although I’ve seen some with duct tape on the inside). All that to say that the thinner the head, the more high, ringing overtones present, which most contemporary players like to attenuate.

HI -thanks for this! Can you spell out the name of the 3M tape here in the US. Super 80...? Super 88? or?
@HeyItsMattBell5 жыл бұрын
theadi339 Yup! It’s 3M Super 88.

Does this affect the ability to tune my drum?
@HeyItsMattBell4 жыл бұрын
Yes! It should make it easier to hear a distinct pitch without as many high overtones.
