Makes me homesick. Made that approach scores of times. Loved it. One of my favorites in the world during a 50+ year career!

I first flew (as a boy) into this airstrip in 1978 in a Douglas Airways 'Britten Norman Islander' and countless times thereafter to stay at the Tapini Lodge. Nothing looks to have changed since then, and if anything, the weather has gotten better as most of the time we couldn't see the airstrip until we were on final.

I was born in Tapini back in the early 70s when my Papa was working there with the Works Department. Him and mama always tell us about the challenges in approaching and taking off from that air strip.

I drove to Tapini with my brothers in 2010. It was the hairiest 4WD trip I've ever done! Especially driving across landslips and fallen trees, while looking at the clouds far below. Absolutely beautiful though. The locals were rather surprised we made it.

I operated a CARIBOU AIRCRAFT, with the RAAF as Captain, in & out of TAPINI AIRSTRIP, when based in TPNG. I think that the aircraft displayed is a PILATUS PORTER. Excellent demo of the approach, landing & take off. Talk about "SCARY" you have to be in the aircraft to see the impossible. Great demo.

use a goat track on your right side to just your angle of descent then turn 90 degrees onto final approach.

Nice video. Which plane is this? And which airline, or organization are you flying for?
