Tar River DRL-072 Planter Review after 8 acres & Overview

For those of you who have followed our channel for the last 8 years or so you'd know that I have struggled for many years, and tried out several different kinds of planters (Ford, Allis Chalmers, John Deere, IH) trying to plant successful food plots on our various different farms over the years. Needless to say all of these older model planters did not work all that well, but granted they were MUCH cheaper... Until now that is. If you are like me and you've looked at drills such as Genesis or RTP you'll know the price take can easily go well past $7,000 and even on up past $10,000. TOO much in my book for a reliable planter. But recently we discovered Tar River implements, who is now carried by our Friend Victor Jennings at Back Forty Tractor and Equipment, so it caught our interest. (Back Forty [phone]). So My buddy ended up doing some homework and really looking over this unit before buying it. He used to be a race car driver, and knows his way around machines quite well. This well made in the USA planter sells for about half of the big brand names, and is made in North Carolina! So today we planted 6.3 acres of soybeans on our farm with it in just about 2.5 hours! Phil's first use was planting some corn over at his farm, roughly 2 acres worth. We have used this Planter for 2 years. We are very happy with the results. Very little seed waste once it is set. I set the boxes off the first field to be sure it is calibrated correctly. It is exactly an acre. After that, just fill and go. We mostly plant wheat and oats mixed with Clover in the same box. Our property has a lot of roads we plant that are 12-18 feet wide. Now, we don't have to worry about wasting seed when broadcasting. The plates on back smooth and cover the bed more than the cultipacker does, but we are in the Louisiana Delta and use it in clay hard soil. This years stand was a lot better. Last year we disked the soil too deep and it was too cloddy. The seed bed was too deep. This year, we used a Tractor Supply chain harrow pulled by a UTV and went over the fields to even the soil and break the larger clods and then drilled the seed. It worked out great for a good even spread. We plant 10 acres of plots.

Just ordered a DRL072 yesterday. Supposed to have it in about 2 weeks. I think it's going to be great for my 5 and 3 acre fields..

Looks to be a nice piece of planting equipment and planting conventional in well prepared soil is even better. Hopefully 8 acres of beans are enough to beat back the browsing pressure. Would be nice to get some to maturity this year. Fingers crossed!!!

You can find them used all over the place. Allis Chalmers no til planter. They work pretty good if you can get one rebuilt or in decent shape.

Yes I believe you can, you just have to change some things around.

Yes this planter needs the ground to be worked up.

Would you spend the money on this drill over a fully restored Allis 2 row no till?

That's a tough call because this one you need tillage but the AC is a no-till

@@kapperoutdoors I plan to till the ground regardless of the implement I decide on. I have found a fully restored allis 2 row planter locally and simply need on to plant 5 acre of sunflowers. Or double my money and order the tar river seeder. I’d like to know what you would choose based on those conditions

@@05tacoSPORT here are the things I would consider. First of all the Alice Chalmers is going to be slower and you don't have as much control on your spacing as with the tar river. So if time is of the essence the tar River is going to plant much faster overall. When I plant my beans or corn I have to double row them basically going over them twice sometimes even three times with my AC drill. so you're looking at a little longer time and more fuel basically. That's what I would use in my decision if you're not going to use it that much I would go with the AC planter. Plus if it's a no-till those hold their value pretty well. Best of luck man

seemed very shallow when you searched for the seed, i thought you usually aimed for about 2 inches of seed depth, I'm sure every area and seed is different tho

Yes soybeans need to be very shallow maybe 1/2 inch Max. Corn needs to be about an inch and a half thanks

Yep. Every seed has its preferred depth. Most all will grow with say 1/4” of depth but some won’t come up if planted too deep. I’ve seen corn come up broadcast on tilled ground but it’s not it’s best depth.

I just bought the 5 ft model ,brand new for 4,000 bucks ,going to be planting this week , ,im gonna experiment with no til corn in an acre spot i brush hogged and sprayed and also about 3 acres of worked ground and compare
