First broadcast: Sep 2014.
Documentary which unlocks the BBC archives to tell the story of abstract art in Britain through the words of some of its leading lights.
From Barbara Hepworth's abstract geometric forms and Bridget Riley's op art imagery to Anthony Caro's bold new ideas about sculpture, the film reveals the remarkable and varied ways in which British artists explored the idea of abstraction in the 20th century.

It's a crazy line to walk between failure/walking away and having the self belief to know that you can turn any failure into success. Compromise is inevitable. Control is death. Magic is necessity.

I love that process of being present in an open space og giving and receiving - it is a way of entering an open, limitless space og Cosmic dialoques - and something happens

It's not about abstract or not. If you're confused it won't work.

Hodgkin’s work would best be described as abstract expressionism. I think that it’s ridiculous to look at his paintings and call them “figurative” art.

John had absolutely great qualities. I think, however, that he lost it towards the end and that destroyed his reputation.

John Hoyland's last paintings are brilliant. His final series of paintings was the best work he'd ever done. Some of the best paintings I've ever seen. Check out Hoyland 'The last Paintings'.

Yes, In Their Own Words because otherwise for the most part people would not understand what horrendous art most of their Art is. The Emperor Has No Close or at least is wearing something Ridiculous! Stand-up Patrons and Collectors of ART its bin way too long That the ART establishment tells ART Patrons and Collectors of ART what is great ART and pins their Values on them and The few Chosen to be Revered. We desperately need more commentary from both The likes and the dislikes of ART.

He doesn't have to explain it. His works are brilliant. He's explaining it because they're making a documentary.

Good point. No one wants an instruction manual to tell them how to think or feel. Words are just sympathy for the work sometimes. Unfortunately words are the only thing we have to help describe the process of creation. For me that process as important as the end result.
