If the prevailing notion is that Vermeer's patron took almost 1/2 of his works could it be that the paintings were taken to settle some sort of debt, an offer that (said) patron was going to perhaps sell the paintings in exchange for (something). If we were to surmise that the paintings were taken by the patron b/c the painter, perhaps routinely loaned him money or helped to prop him up in his time(s) of need. Could this have been another reason why the patron might have taken many of Vermeer's paintings. It's worth contemplating. It's food for thought.

@Trojanette83 - Or perhaps the patron was mad for Vermeer's lush and gorgeous paintings.

Speculative nonsense told in a British accent is 83% more believable.

It's speculative but not necessarily nonsense. The Dutch accent in pronouncing the place names is faulty however.

Perhaps Vermeer was already converting or a convert to the Catholic faith before meeting his wife --- maybe that is how he met his wife? "The rich Catholics who turn out to be the dysfunctional neighbors from hell" as opposed to the rich Protestant neighbors who were all angels? Domestic abuse comes from all walks and faiths of life. Love history but it is hard to find a historian who doesn't inject snide personal remarks in telling a story that is based on politically and culturally bias.

@JadeZee 0 Or vice versa. They are both great artists, but with Vermeer's genius for composition, color, light, and glazing, given a choice, I would take a Vermeer.
