I don't know about you but i don't think movies need to be considered 'offensive' to be entertaining, or need to have things that could be considered to be offensive in them to be entertaining (although 'offensive movies' can and are mostly entertaining). But hey, if you do only find entertainment from 'offensive' movies you can definetly find those movies (even nowadays), u just gotta go outside the mainstream. Depending upon what people define 'offensive' as nowadays u can find lots of amazing movies that are 'offensive'. I mean shit, best movie of the year so far 'the green knight' i'm sure people can call offensive by reading a misogynistic interpretation into it. Just go watch any Lars von Trier movie and u find an offensive masterpiece. Cinema hasn't been killed by cancle culture at all. Maybe mainstream cinema, but even some of the mainstream stuff has some amazing films in them that, yes, aren't offensive, but nonetheless amazing movies.

Everything isn't offensive though. Also you can be offensive you just have to be sure that you know what you are talking about. If you have empathy, talent, and skill you can do anything but its like any caustic material if you just whip it around don't be surprised at the reaction. It seems to me Tarantino's argument is the precursor to "Never apologize if you didn't do anything wrong." Normal people understand that a movie is a work of fiction and what happens in a movie isn't real and can be enjoyed and separated from reality. So if somebody thinks your movie is going to be problematic, why give a shit what they think? It's your work, make it how you want and see who else is willing to enjoy it.

I think what Tarantino brought was a realism to the violence that didn't really exist before. To say that the 1980s didn't have violent movies is to ignore franchises like Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween... Tarantino wasn't afraid to use the gore factor that was so popularized in the 80s, but he used it in far more realistic situations and not just sensationalized gore.

The change that happened in the 90s filmmaking was ignited by the massive success of Scorsese's Goodfellas which came out in 1990. QT managed to get Reservoir Dogs funded thanks to it. Scorsese changed the 1990s just as much as he changed the 1970s. QT was of course extremely influential on 1990s culture, but he did not start the change.

Thank god for Quentin Tarantino. We had a litany of really good movies in the 90’s first directed by him but then done by many writers and directors who you can tell followed the level of what is considered as allowed that had been set by him and his movies. The issue here is what he said at 0:56. He said there is more of a "blacklist" and that in the 80's they were "doing it to themselves" meaning that they were censoring their own films and art because of their own personal ideals. Which is fine, that is still art. I can get behind top 10. For sure. Some of his recent work seems overly self aware but otherwise he's been gold. Seeing the uncut 70mm version of Hateful 8 in the theater was amazing. There was an intermission right after Samuels big snake speech. The audience sat there in shock for a good 30 silent seconds.

Man, I really hope Tarantino gets to go ahead with that Star Trek movie we've been hearing about on and off over the past decade. The current iteration of Star Trek is a series that really could do with a bit of "I do what I want for my artistic vision" right now rather than it's current focus on political preaching. I know Star Trek has never been a stranger to political subtext, but historically it was always a "what if that? This might happen" or "how would you respond " type of scenario, as opposed to a "THIS is how you should respond" and "there is no grey, only black and white" message that current iterations of the show preach instead .

The example you gave isn't preaching at all. It's exactly what I said it used to do. There'll never be another time for great movies like the 90's. Films were creative, well made, had beautiful sreenplays, haunting, Wagnerian soundtracks etc., etc... if there ever was an award show for honoring pop culture, the 90's would win in the movie category, whereas the 80's would win in the music category. The film that comes closest to a 90's blockbuster btw. is Top Gun Maverick.

They even managed to screw up with Star Wars man. Fans have writen some very good contente by themselves, all for free, other companies have done the same as well with games and animations, meterial enough to write thousands of movies from it. All Disney had to do was picking the right story from the infinite colection that Star Wars cannon used to be, and adapt it. What they did? "Luke Skywalker journey again, but he was replaced by a worthless Mary Sue, and became a jerk". Not only that but they literaly threw all that rich material straight into the trash. I would kill to have a Old Republic movie with Revan as our main character. But no, the "public" wants"strong" woman.
