I love jumping spiders, I’ve always thought of them as the curious puppies of the spider world. Found a lethargic one in my house a few days ago, it’s too cold to let it go outside and dry in the house, so gave it a little enclosure with some bugs and it’s happy and hydrated again. Would love to get a fancier one someday.

I currently have 106 jumping spiders. A gravid female P. Audax wandered into my house and laid a sac as soon as she placed into her comfortable enclosure. The slings are 6 days old and every single one is alive and well. 88% of them have already taken their first meal, and that number keeps rising every hour. Meanwhile, the mom has already laid her second sac. 😳

I’ve recently started to notice that my jumping spider won’t eat at all. I can hold a meal worm right up to his face for like 30min and he won’t do anything with it. I leave his mealworms in a small cup in is enclosure just so he can eat whenever he’s hungry but they’ve been in there for a long time and haven’t been touched. I’ve also started to notice that he’s falling off the side of his enclosure more often, which i’ve herd is a sign that he’s old. I’ve had him since June or July. When i got him he was already a full grown jumping spider so i can only guess that his time is sadly starting to come. I really hope he’s able to make it until Christmas.

Mature males are a lot tougher because unlike females, once they do mature they typically will refuse food as mating is all they care about at that point. You can try mushing up a feeder and offering it that way, or even putting the mushed bits into a bit of water and feeding by a-tip. Sometimes that entices them. Also, once they start falling off the sides of the enclosure, you can put them into a smaller one with fine mesh on the sides to give them something to grip onto and make sure there’s plenty of soft substrate to break a fall. Sending you all the best thoughts to you and your small boy. It’s definitely tough seeing them through this stage. ❤️

I caught a baby jumping spider in my kitchen! I was already orientating for one. So having a baby in my kitchen felt like a gift from the universe. I'm so in love with it. I hope it'll survive. I named it Elodin. He/she is currently 4/5 ish mm large. I live in the Netherlands and they definitely are a bit smaller. They are so f cute though. I was able to make a video of its ini mini tiny face and white fluf. I instantly bought fruitflies. But I have to.. disable them a bit since Elodin in still so tiny and doesn't catch them, yet. And I'm catching ini mini flies for it. It seemed a bit afraid of the small once I ordered. I hope it will grow nice and "big". I was absolutely terrified of spiders but your channel made me fall head over heels in love with the jumping spider. In the spring I had a jumping spider living in my kitchen and I always helped it to safety when I was making dinner. It was so interested in watching me. It intrigued me. Elodin just now showed itself again. Urg it's so adorable. Thank you so much Kat. The information, your energy, your spiders. Your enthusiasm. It has helped me tremendously. More people should try keeping other species of jumping spider. I live in Australia where we have laws preventing us from importing non-native invertebrates, we have to make do with what's native here. So as a result I keep a variety of jumping spider species such as; Maratus griseus, Maratus vespertilio, Opisthoncus nigrofemuratus, Ocrisiona leucomis, Clynotis severus, Servae vestitia, and I'm trying to accuire a couple Portia fimbriata once they're available. I also keep a couple wolf spiders, two Venatrix psuedospecialis, a Artoriopsis sp. and another one that I haven't ID'ed. I've also got a Philoponella congregabilis, venomless spiders that I want to keep around for feeders. One of them had their babies just come out of the eggsack so there's now 54 of them.

@@vanessasmith5227 None of them are particularly large. And they fancy colourful Maratus genus tend to be tiny, hard to find, and very short-lived. But jumping spiders are so cool, they don't scare me at all if I keep some distance to watch them. You sound like you have an impressive collection, were you always OK with spiders? Or did you have to work up to tarantulas? I am trying to figure out a way to get over it. And, this is no lie, my wife just called me over because of a big spider while I was writing this. I had to give her the shoe, because I couldn't even stand to look at it. Their movements and shape are just so unnatural, it really unnerved me. I sadly learned one difference very quickly: A local, small jumping spider visited my home and I put it into an impromptu enclosure. I only cared for web spiders before, fell into the "do what you always do" trap and put in a teeny tiny water bowl, a good deal smaller than a bottle cap. But it still was to big and all the "spiders hardly ever drown" talk on the net didn't matter, it drowned in no time. I suspect it couldn't escape the surface tension. Got a P. Regius nymph shortly after and won't repeat that mistake! No water reservoir, more misting instead.

I've been trying to get wild jumpers forever for my son and I to keep as pets and breed and release since I'm in Florida and I'm in an area with zero large breed jumpers. So I ask everyone with no luck so far but I'm looking for someone to catch and ship me one or more, I will pay I just cannot afford thirty dollars for a jumper that may not even be the breed stated in the add. And I want the possibility of getting a pregnant female so wild caught is what I'm after for my right year old son and I. If that is something you would want to do let me know. I can catch lots of amazing isopods and spiders etc etc etc to trade also. Figure it can't hurt to ask. Sorry your spider drowned😩
@vanessasmith52273 жыл бұрын
Jumping Spiders only need a light misting on the side of their enclosures every 3-4 days (everyday if they are in premoult or you live in a very dry area) if they are a Phidippus sp.
@Gargboss3 жыл бұрын
@@rebelicious4076 Sorry, different continent, so I can't help you with that. Maybe try looking for expos instead of breeders, when you're concerned about shipping time? Otherwise, local interest groups on social media? With P. Regius being a local species, I assume there must be some people who keep/breed them, even though they aren't professional breeders. It may sound hypocritical to say to avoid wild catching, but take me as a bad example here. I planned to release it again in the spring (most spiders in my area spend the winter in buildings anyway), but one mistake on my part spelled doom for this lil' guy.
@rebelicious40763 жыл бұрын
@@Gargboss I keep lots of true spiders and tarantula's, I've bred my T's I have been successful with every small species jumpers I've caught. I have a newborn so my weight year old and I can't just goto expos I sure wish I could go. And the biggest reason for wanting wild caught by non pro breeders is the price, and the chance of females being pregnant and having multiple egg sacs. They are native where I live and I would love to see them around my home all the time, I want to re stock this area or at least try. And in that process teach my son a few things. He has paired T's with me before and he has had his own isopod colonies that he's caught himself we love to catch things so he can learn about them while we care for them. As of right now we don't have anything we've caught and multiplied because we always end up releasing everything. Tiny tree dwelling jumpers have the same huge personalities as the regal and bold jumpers but all the expressions and mannerisms are so hard to really see. My son and I both have terrible vision. They are harder to keep track of too of course. I didn't think about social media groups because I've been locked out of my Facebook for SO LONG now and I JUST got back in cuz I got a different phone... So I'm going to check that out. I had accepted the fact I lost all my accounts losing Google.

I do wonder about socializing (for lack of a better word, of course) tarantulas. We often underestimate "lower" animals quite a lot. I had read for example that people have had more luck raising communal tarantulas who were raised together, OR introducing both sets into a new tank together, which one would THINK suggests they can at least be familiar with individuals. It makes you think: what if it's (for example, again) scent-based instead of sight? If we change the soap with which we washed our hands, are we a total stranger to them?

Thank you so much for the vid! It's honestly so charming, learning all these details about jumping spider keeping in particular. I lucked into discovering a lovely little P. audax female this past weekend, hiding out from cold in our firewood-and I'd be super interested if you have any tips in getting jumping spiders used to handling! Because this one's first impression of me has been me "destroying her home" (and girl I am so glad I did? I would have burned you with the firewood if the bark hadn't pulled away??), we've definitely gotten off on the wrong foot: she only has come out to nab a cricket, and otherwise hides out in her "hammock," which itself is built deep inside the elevated hide I provided. Any suggestions? Will she get braver over time? Or perhaps I just have a natural introvert (and hey, relatable).

We get jumping spiders in our house all the time. Our kids always get excited to see them. We let them live their lives doing jumping spiders things. Besides, I don't think we have room for another enclosure. 😆

Hi Kat, I really need your advice. My jumping spider had a bad molt, and his legs got stuck in uncomfortable positions to where he cannot even walk. He’s still alive. Do you have any advice on what I could do? :( Thank you for your help

Can you have a glade plugin/wax warmer in the same room as a jumper if the room is really big and the above items are across the room from the spider?

Hi Kat! Could you do a video on ways to know if your phiddipus regius spiders are willing to mate and when the female is saying no? Or any tips/precautions to take? I want to attempt to mate my spiders but I'm so nervous my female will eat my male. I've tried to find information on the topic and all I can find is how/ when to breed them and videos of them being paired.

Did you use any type of embalming/mummification process for your deceased jumping spiders in those little preservation jars?

For people wondering about jumping spider intelligence; Just do a deep dive on all of the crazy studies ongoing involving the Portia Jumping spider.......... The studies continue for a multitude of reasons. It's not just "intelligence", memory and problem solving type stuff. All packed into a spider that is smaller than a dime. It's fascinating stuff. Also they are THE jumping spider that other spiders....including other jumping spiders fear. They aren't pretty.........but holy crap...just look into it, it's phenomenal.

I recently caught a small female regal and I just moved her into a bigger house today after she came out from her second molt in my care. I picked up the box and was looking for her and something moved across my vision. I focused on it and there was a tiny brown jumper. Maybe half the size of a grain of rice. From the brown color I'm thinking it's another female regal. She's in a cup, full of fruit flies.

Kat I would love to know how you feel about velvet spiders in comparison to the jumpers. I know you love Wednesday but I can't seem to choose between a jumpers and a velvet.
