As much as I enjoyed the Ride of the Rohirrim in theatre first time I saw it, nothing beats the old 'cast of thousands' movies we had long before CGI. Zaporoški!

Somewhat of a forgotten fact concerning this film. It was filmed almost entirely in Argentina. The cossacks where actually local gauchos. Kudos to old Hollywood.

Yep, I was about 10 when I saw this some time in mid 60's on TV. Yul Brenner was terrific. Tony Curtis was pretty good, better in the Black Shield of Falworth. Both movies are favorites for different reasons. Great fan of Turin Thatcher. He played in one of the Sin Bad Movies as well as the Black Shield.

I remember this movie well! I was 12 and got to watch this movie at my local neighborhood theater. The Cossacks fought for the Pols to fight the Turks after winning the Pols betrayed the Cossacks by attacking them at a fake ceremony honoring their victory. The cossacks disperse and waited 20 yr to enact revenge on the Pols - this became on of my all time favorite movie along with Errol Flynn's 1930s Charge of the Light Brigade, The Adventures of Robin Hood and Yul Brynner's Kings of the Sun all hold a place of honor in my CD library of 700+ movies.

If they're walking beside their horses they're far from the location of the battle, generally, they go at a walk, then a trot (a horse can trot fifteen, twenty miles and more). Canter is another pace horses can hold for long distances, before a charge the horses go from trot or canter to small gallop. It's only at the very end that a full on charge takes place. I've been on a horse at small trot for 18 non-stop miles, once arrived at destination (rejoining cattle that had been moved to Summer pastures) we turned around and trotted back. A total of 36 miles in one short day. In this movie, they're moving at a fast trot, the incongruous "cinematic" part is the white horses going at full gallop but in a real context it's unrealistic since they're part of the larger group going at a much smaller pace.

He returns next year with alk his hordes and burns the city to the ground killing every man, woman and child except for thr man and his family that protected him and helped his escape.

_So... how long can a horse run like that?_ Depends on the horses, but a lot further than you may think. During WW1 two Australian Light Horse regiments charged across 6 km, nearly 4 miles of open ground to take Beersheba in Palestine (now Israel) after having marched 36 miles the night before. Most of the horses had been without water for a couple of days.

They didn't charge at a gallop the whole way though. Cavalry rarely if ever did that. You start out at a war can only come to the gallop when you're relatively close. You can't gallop many miles to a meeting which is implied in the movie.
