Yea but it's a movie, so . ...
@paulhomsy27518 ай бұрын
If they're walking beside their horses they're far from the location of the battle, generally, they go at a walk, then a trot (a horse can trot fifteen, twenty miles and more). Canter is another pace horses can hold for long distances, before a charge the horses go from trot or canter to small gallop. It's only at the very end that a full on charge takes place. I've been on a horse at small trot for 18 non-stop miles, once arrived at destination (rejoining cattle that had been moved to Summer pastures) we turned around and trotted back. A total of 36 miles in one short day. In this movie, they're moving at a fast trot, the incongruous "cinematic" part is the white horses going at full gallop but in a real context it's unrealistic since they're part of the larger group going at a much smaller pace.

_So... how long can a horse run like that?_ Depends on the horses, but a lot further than you may think. During WW1 two Australian Light Horse regiments charged across 6 km, nearly 4 miles of open ground to take Beersheba in Palestine (now Israel) after having marched 36 miles the night before. Most of the horses had been without water for a couple of days.
@bobmetcalfe96407 ай бұрын
They didn't charge at a gallop the whole way though. Cavalry rarely if ever did that. You start out at a war can only come to the gallop when you're relatively close. You can't gallop many miles to a meeting which is implied in the movie.
