Nice work on the run, we had pretty similar times. That section to buried village in the sun was brutal. Great to see some more footage from the early sections, I didnt remember half those trails 😅

Yeah the last bit out to buried village is where it went a bit sideways for me, once the water ran out it was a struggle to get it back on track. Lost a decent amount of time from that but was really just looking to complete so all good.

heavy sweater here, and fellow competitor last month. 1.5 Litres seems dangerously low. I use the solamon 12L vest and comfortably carried 2.5 Litres for the Isthmus to buried village section. Try playing around with your kit to find what works, for future races 1.5 will simply not be enough. You can fit another soft flask in each front zip pocket and multiple in the main rear pocket.

yeah it was ok on most the sections as they came in at 1:30-2:00 hours ish, but that buried village section was longer than expected at 3:13 (although to be fair that's including dropping to a walk due to the water issue). Later on once night came i actually picked up a 4th softflask as a hand bottle and rammed it under my vest shoulder strap which worked ok and let me use the poles while doing the return from okatina, too little too late though really. The weight can be an issue as i'm pretty close to the point my knees aren't happy to begin with, i might see if i can lose 5kg of body weight, add a little muscle, and take 1kg more in water. The last time i was 5kg less i was a lot faster too, which might make the water needs a bit easier. Do you do anything to stop the bite valves getting squashed and leaking water out ? I saw they make twist locking tops for them but they're sold out everywhere, sadly.

@@puddlepounce I clocked in at Buried village over 91kms on my watch, so i put some of the blame on the race organizes for that. I'm sure leg strength work in the gym would help. I was weighing in at 88kg on the day and legs felt better than ever which I put down to my non running training. The soft flasks I put in my back are from Decathlon, and they have a twist lock. Not sure if they're available in NZ as i live in Melbourne.

Thanks for the update and congrats, massive achievement, when you have a chance, I would be interested in the dehydration issues you go through and the impact on the body. Thanks for sharing, great video

I've done a lot of sweat rate tests, testing body weight before and after runs at various temperatures, and i know i can sweat at a decent amount, and seemingly more than i can take in or realistically even carry over distances, too. That's not a huge problem per se, but the issue on the longer runs it just adds up over time. Overall in isolation not a massive issue, but the problem really comes when it seems to then induce EIH, (exercise induced hematuria) - blood in the urine. I believe it's just the bladder being so empty, plus jostling around for a while, equals inflammation and then finally, bleeding. It hurts quite a bit to pee and because the bladder is filling from both outside with water and inside with blood you end up needing to pee quite a lot. I've had it a few times now, it's why i DNF'ed the 100k back in 2022 also :(. I'm not really sure how to combat it beyond just dropping down to a walk for the duration of the race from that point onwards (to help stop the jostling about and lower the sweat rate to get some water in), which is pretty frustrating. Still a work in progress on that front at the moment, sadly.

Nice work battling through. I was doing the 100k. Pretty sure I crossed paths with you somewhere between Millar and Tikitapu just before dark. Looked like a lot of sore bodies in the miler!

Thanks. Yeah, the course this year was pretty tough for both races i think. Last year the 100k started at the bottom of the Okataina climb which got it out the way really early on and was much easier i'd say, esp mentally.
