Norman kite shields had a strap like that ,but they are larger in size and weight more potentially. I think it’s a great addition still, looks great

Good video. I like your attention to detail. I do have one request, if I may. Will you please give a detailed list of the materials you used. Like what was it that you rubbed on the leather, what size nails to attach hand grips/ leather round, what type of wood & metal for the middle emblem, etc? I seriously want to make one. Thanks & may God bless you. 🙏🌎
@Carancerth3 ай бұрын
Thanks a lot for your kind comments There is several sizes of brass nails. But I rememeber I used 2mm nails (about 12mm long) The wood is a 15mm plywood. Leather something beetween 2 & 3mm vegetable tanned cow Leather. What I rubbed was grease after the de, so the leather would not crack. The nails used for the grips are modern nails with flat heads, about 3mm large or 4mm. I shall make an audio commentar in the future with the followinf tutorials, so it would be easer to understand everything. ;) Be blessed too!

I have considered doing this a few times but am worried about wasting the leather as I wanted to use 4mm thick vegetable tanned leather for the face. I am worried about getting it to fold and lay neatly when it comes to the edges. For the back I have deerskin with hair and tanned deerskin I could use and I could easily make handles, maybe even rolling leather into a tube and sewing it for the hand hold.
@Carancerth2 жыл бұрын
For the next targes I'm working on at the moment I use a leather about 3mm thick. I personly choose to ad 5 (on the video) to 7,5 cm to the shape; Making a 60 (on the video) to 65 cm circle for a 50cm plywood circle. So: the new ones will have probably more margin, but the leather is also thicker, and I will probably damp it too I personly prefer straps for the hand grip: so that I could handle a dagger too ;)

In thought the targe was made with planks of wood two layered glued and nailed together?

Where did you source the spherical brass ball portion of the brass center feature?

You can, and actuallly this one I cant say, bit the orc shiel I made, close to this rotella/targe concept but bigger, held quite welll ! So far nothing to signal. ;) well, nothing concerning for the use it had! ;p

Where did you find that brass nail with a huge spherical end to serve as the shield's center boss? What's it called? I want to make a targe of my own, but there's really not much point if you can't get those.

For this one as a decoration it will be fine, but not for fight ;) Just search for big brass nails on the web, perhaps Etsy, can't remember ^^"

Is this Targe only for decoration or function? I ask because the lack of mechanical connection between both pieces of wood.
@Carancerth Жыл бұрын
That question is relevant ! Actually I have 3 shields like this one and I use 2 for sparring. (one to keep clean and tidy) The gluing of plank is used in shield since the antiquity, and plywood works just fine for HEMA/ reenactment ! (without being the right way to go if you want to experiement and push some VERY specific studies ;) )
