I had a pirated cartridge of this game when I was a kid. It was called Double Dragon 4 and I honestly wondered why it was only a single player game

@Dima_Guitar, thanks for pointing this out. This is exactly how I remember the game. I am from Namibia and we got this exact version of "Double Dragon 4" as a rental from the local VHS rental store. I had to type a description of the gameplay into Copilot to find Renegade which still is not the correct game and had to sift through all the youtube videos to find Target: Renegade, but we also only knew it as Double Dragon 4 here. The game was definitely better through the lens of a 7 year old. Did not age well but good to know my brothers and I were not crazy. So in actual fact we were playing Target: Renegade back then.

Besides the music this only resembles the computer game is very broad strokes. The settings are the same, there's some of the same enemy types, but the fighting mechanics are completely stupid. In the computer game you still had a Renegade-like move set, complete with grabs, knocking enemies to the ground, various weapon types etc This NES version simplifies it to such an extent that all you do is spam the same move over and over again

I didn't know this existed and it's incredible! The music, the graphics, It's right there with the Double Dragon games in terms of quality (Double Dragon 3 not standing of course, that one was terrible) and with incredible music as well

The sprites aren’t even the shadow of the DD trilogy. Let alone the animations and moves. The music is totally amazing though.

I had this game when I was a kid, but I never made it to the end. I think the farthest I ever got was the part where those skateboard guys are coming at you. Watching this brought back memories. Though now, I have to wonder what Mr. Big wanted with that guy's brother.

Exactly my thought. Always bothered me the Double Dragon NES games had only 2 enemies on screen. At least DD3 can have 2 different enemies at once, but still.

The difference is the color of the sprites. DD, TMNT and mighty final fight all have bigger and more complex sprites (with shades of color in their clothes etc) with much more animations which are also more fluids than on this game. And a much more complex gameplay and movesets. Also this one is 1 player only (yeah I know MFF and DD1 are one player too).

What’s wrong with DD3? Too hard for you? That game has the best beatemup gameplay mechanics of any 8bit game: cooperative moves (even enemies have it), different grabs, wall jump which is a feature not even many modern beat’em ups have. Stage are boring, it feels like arenas where you just wait for enemies to come instead of you moving to get them. Stage design and music wise DD2 is better, but DD3 aside of the one life only issue, it’s a good game.
