"Kevin, call your mother..." is all Kev heard as he slid downward against the kitchen wall, hands trembling, his eyes scanning the darkened corners of the room. Wiping the sweat from his brow and taking a deep breath, Kev realized that there was a ColecoVison in the den where he retired for the evening to play Lady Bug and all was well.

Target existed in California during the early 1980s? No way! Lol I was born in the 1970s, and we didn't see a Target store on the East Coast until late 2000, early 2001!

I did not even know a Target was open back then. They just began opening in Boston in the 2000s.

Damn...$169 bucks!!! In 1982 that was a hell of a lot of coin. I guess the Wii at $199 isn't such a bad price. PS3 and X-Box at $400, there's your inflation baby. I had a ColecoVision in 1983 for Christmas. I thought I was the coolest kid on the block. Beat the hell out of the 2600 Atari. I wish I still had it.

I had one of those early Record-a-call units back in the 80s and it had this little remote that produced a unique tone that the unit would recognize when you phoned home to check your messages. There were only so many different tones, so your messages could be hacked by people using war dialers and tone generators.

I'm more surprised they had Targets back then! Targets didn't start openining up in my area until the Playstation one hit stores. That surprised me more than anything. The answering machine was funny too. That must have been cutting edge then!

@southport97 - Not originally - Richway was originally owned by Rich's Department Stores. They were later bought by Federeated Department Stores and changed most of the stores into Gold Circle in 1986, then they were bought by Target's parent company in 1988, and all the remaining Gold Circles became Targets. Rich's Department Stores went out of business in 2005.

I never knew how much Coleco cost until now. Of course for the time, $170 and these graphics were pretty groundbreaking but looking back 25+ years $170 is laughable. Ah the 80's, how I miss you so!

I never even seen or heard of a Target store until around 1998 when the first one opened in south eastern PA. I guess they were a west coast thing back then? My parents bought me a 2600 at clover in around 82 for around 189 or so. Realize that 189 dollars in 82 was a lot more than it is now. It was originally $199 in 77, which is probably close to 500 in todays dollars. The original 77 version had MUCH better joysticks, but you wouldn't know it by looking at it (the insides were better made)

Back in those days-the early 80s i was around 16 and had my first job. I was making "good money" back then. Well, compared to 1983 salary for teenagers i was. I was making like around 6 bucks a hour while most other teenagers were lucky to make 3 a hour. I believe 3 a hour was minimum wage back then if im right. Anyways, all that money i was making went in on video games-colecovision, atari, and of course weekend trips to the local video game arcades! Wonder how much i blew on that crap?

Coleco kinda suffered from lack of games. Same thing that hurt Intellivision, & pretty much every single retro game system, until the original NES/Famicom. At least Coleco could play Atari 2600 games. That kind saved it. So many people had Atari. Graphics don't mean much if there are no games to play.

Video games are getting more expensive nowadays. For a new Xbox 360 game, correct me if I'm wrong, it's a whopping $59.99 Who has that kind of money? $50 was alot of money then, and it's still alot of money now. For about $20 or so, I got this cheap-o-matic game system that has old school NES games on it. It's one of those plug-and-play thingamajiggies. I want a Nintendo Wii and I wonder how much the games are.

@wgamador $169.99 in 1983 is close to 4 bills today. I had Olympians for play shoes, but I begged enough and my Mom got me Nike (pronounced NYK with no "e" back then) Burt Bruins (they were like $32.99, a cool $75.00 in todays' money) for school. Then I wore those to play baseball in and ripped the fuckers. I knew for sure at that point an ass whooping was headed my way, and I deserved it. My kid knows not to ask for $75.00 shoes, he is smarter than I was apparently.
