In the early 80's I was helping out at the local gun shop, when I heard about Remington bringing out the Model 7 bolt-action in .35 Remington. I IMMEDIATELY pre-ordered one. And since the distributor was local, I maybe have the first one delivered in my state. I am a handloader and have never fired a factory load in it. I worked up a trial series of loads and went to the range. Using the 180 grain speer bullet, I fired a 5 shot, 1 hole group at 50 yards, that was less than 3/4 of an inch in diameter, all holes touching. One caution when handloading if you full length size the case the shoulder may be moved back enough to case misfires, I use the Redding Competition shellholder to size my cases to the chamber, and all problems solved. With the 1-5X, Leupold Compact Scope, I have mounted on it, it has been my faithful companion for many years.

I have a 1951 Marlin 335C full 20" land groves barrel in .35 Remington, it was my grandfather's favorite all purpose hunting rifle. He gave it to me in 1964, my birthday present Soph years of High School because I wore out my 1917 made Winchester 92 in 22-250 I bought for $20 in 1960. As a central Illinois farm kid hunting was a JOB you could learn to enjoy. I'm now 74 and have had that Marlin 336 on probably a thousand hunting trips and expidition from Alaska, to Texas, Spain to Finland, even 12 times in Africa and two dozen hunts in South America. With that .35 Rem I've bagged Elk, Mountian Bighorn, Black Bear, every species of Deer, Cougar, African Antelope and Pronghorn, a Grisly Bear with 3 shots (1 to make sure), numerous Canadian Bull Elk and two Moose (not a huge fan of Moose meat. In the Monterrey area of the central coast it has 3 900lb + Russian Blue Boar that my usual Boar gun, a Ruger Super Blackhawk in .357Mag Rifle loads failed to stop with one shot. I've taken two dozen with that Ruger over 17 years of Hunting on Hunter Liggett Army Base. I still have that 1951 Marlin 336 and I bought another 1960 model used in 1970 just in case. The 1970 has a scope on it, but the '51 is still "just iron sights" like my grandpa used.

Back in the late 80s, my dad got a really good deal on a .30-06 that he couldn't pass up. He hunted with that for three seasons, gave it to me, and went back to his .35 Remington. He didn't even like the LEVERevolutions, said they were "too hot". When he started hunting, he said he could only get the 150gr and they worked OK but when he got the 200gr, he liked that one way more and that's all he ever used (Remington Green Box 200gr Core-Lokts).

Love my Marlin 336 in 35 Rem…it was my dream gun when I was a kid. I typically load Speer 180gr FNSP using H4198. I have taken a number of deer and have not yet recovered a bullet. Indiana allows rifles for deer on public land as long as they are 35 cal or larger and the case length does not exceed 1.8”. So I trimmed the neck on my cases back to achieve a case length of 1.795” and use a Lee factory crimp die to put a light crimp on the bullet. It works great, is accurate and legal!

Hi, I'm not US citizen nor resident, could you please explain to me what is the sence to limit the length of case?
@philiph5542 жыл бұрын
Hello… The original thought was to limit rifles to handgun cartridges and the 460 S&W had a case length of 1.8”. However the rule did not limit the cartridges to straight wall cases, so using bottle neck cartridges that meet the case length are acceptable. Now to clarify, the minimum caliber (35) and case length only apply to public land. Since the rule was originally introduced the game commission (DNR) has allowed center fire rifles of 6mm (.243) or larger to be used on private land. Most hunting in Indiana occurs on private land, so the rule is not really a hinderance. Since I really enjoy my lever guns, I have set up my 35 Rem to use on both private or public land if I so choose. Hopes that helps your understanding. Phil
@holgerdanske39602 жыл бұрын
@@philiph554 Thank you Philip, your answer has only partially helped me. What I do not understand is why the authorities limit rifle cartridges to the length of handgun cartridges. From a hunting point of view, it is better to shoot with a stronger cartridge (=longer partridge), with which you can kill more safely and better than with weaker cartridges. Have I misunderstood something or thought in the wrong direction? Or is this reduction intended to give the game a better chance? Appreciate any answer..
@philiph554 Жыл бұрын
Hello Holger, I don’t have a clear answer for you. It is difficult to understand the reasoning of government officials, Indiana DNR in this case. Part of it may have to do with human population density within the state. Less powerful pistol rounds, in theory, would not travel as far as higher powered rifle rounds in the event of an errant shot. It may also be that about 20 yrs prior to allowing rifles, the INDNR approved the use of handguns for deer hunting and they simply allowed the use of rifles using the same cartridges. A rifle in 44 mag or 454 Casull is very effective on deer out to 150yds and most shots in Indiana probably fall within that range. Also of note, prior to allowing handguns and subsequently rifles, we were limited to shotguns loaded with deer slugs or muzzleloaders when it came to firearms. We also have an archery season. I hope that helps your understanding. Phil

I’ve taken numerous animals (mostly Georgia hogs and a couple North Carolina whitetails) with my Marlin 35 Remington, my favorite was a mule deer buck (Utah). I always carry a backup rifle in my truck when hunting and almost took out my 35 the night before (my nephew was using my 30-06 for his first elk hunt). I was using my trusty 300 WinMag that morning and it’s around 5 degrees with a foot of fresh snow. I took a break about an hour into my hike and set my rifle against a tree, when taking my pack off I snagged the barrel and my rifle hit the ground. The shock and cold weather shattered the ocular lens. I was mad to say the least, but I trekked down to my truck and grabbed the 35, I was really hesitant because of the limited range. But, I went on anyway. Two hours later I had a nice 3x4 (7 pointer for you east coast hunters) sitting on the ground, with a 110 yard shot.

My favorite Marlin is the half magazine model (24" barrel as I recall) owned that in a .35 Remington, traded it a long time ago. I felt that rifle with the half magazine was reminiscent of one of my favorites, the Winchester 71 .348. The .35 Remington is a great cartridge Roosevelt's son Kermit used a Model 8 Remington in .35 on the 1909 African Safari. From a kneeling position he put 5 rounds into the chest of a charging lioness, it was dead when she crashed into him. The .35 Remington is superior on big game as compared to the .30-30 and is a better performer on larger game animals. Yep I use and like my Pre 64 Model 94 in .30-30 but that does not mean it's better on larger game, the .35 is better.

I don't know why the 35 Rem hasn't made a come back. When I was a kid in the 70's-80's it was very popular in northern WI. Inside 150 yds (with proper projectiles) it's a real deer killer. For reloaders you get a pretty efficient cartridge when you consider performance obtained by the small powder charges it takes.

I agree. Even though I like its bigger younger brother the 358. But grow up in fl and south ga. You would see 50 30-30 and about 10 32 spc For 1 of the 35 you saw. And on our little deer it really didn't matter but on the big wild hogs and bear it did. Oh there was one really old nice man that used a winchester 33 he also had a 348 win. But he said the older 33 worked better. He was a government cattle ranger back when they did so much of the horn worm / screw worm work. If they could not get to cow out and get it dipped the state told them to kill them. And he did bear and panther work. That was old fl. Pre ww2

The 35 rem is a great cartridge I own 1 myself. My got to deer gun is my 45-70 with a 405 hard cast at about 1400 fps. I took a mature buck this year with it. He was around 225 lbs and a very wide 8 point. He learned the hard way you have to leave them girls alone they will get you killed.

Love that rifle length 336 you have and .35 Remington is still popular around here but factory ammo is almost impossible to find.

My vintage 80’s marlin 336 in 30-30 shoots well under an inch at 100 yards with 150 Barnes tsx and 36 grains of leverevolution. Didn’t think the old girl was capable of such groups until I found this combo

Preaching to the choir on this one, George. For my money that combo is the finest whitetail rifle and cartridge ever produced. 200 grains of 35 caliber round nose soft point perfection. It’d be the last rifle I’d ever part with.

I wish I had more field experience with this round. But aside from the Decades of dreaming about a 35 Remington I've only been building first-hand experience for about 3 years. But it's good to have Channel friends like you, Bud!

Because it is a great cartridge and now that Marlin/Ruger is bringing back the original 336 in 30-30 and the fine .35 Rem I will be picking one up this spring when they hit the shelves.

Great presentation on of the power of the 35 Remington. I was in Alphena Michigan a few years ago and bought a Marlin 336 chambered for the 35 Remington. I hunted with it one time in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Unfortunately I had no opportunity during that hunt. I did return later in the month and harvested a nice 5x5 whitetail.with my 280 Remington.

I had the same reaction as you after the pumpkin. My Marlin and I will be in the woods in about a week or so. It is a stainless MXLR in .308 ME with a Williams FP sight. You have a very nice older 336 there, beautiful.

Top Quality video, George! 35 Remington, good taste! Thank You! If mine will shoot lead free bullets, I'll be hunting with my 35 Remington, this year. California is regulating lead free bullet use ONLY, for hunting any game animal. Problem is....accuracy is terrible, in most calibers, with the lead free bullets.
@PappyfromtheKeys Жыл бұрын
Somewhere between 15 and 20 years ago I did the same thing. I primarily hunt Alabama where the shots are not long range. I have both the 30-30 and the .35 available and both are set up differently for different areas I hunt. Not going back to conventional bolt action probably every again for these woods.

1st deer I ever got was with a Marlin 336 in .35 REM back in 1974. Using a 200 grain power point Winchester. Hunting the Smith farm on the Big Cobbler mountain in Marshall VA. Good memories.

Superb rifle/cartridge setup for hunting under 200yds. Enough frontal area, diameter, and mass to make cast bullets and jacketed equal in viability for hunting. The modern 375win and 38-55 are in the same category. These are an step up over the well known 30-30.

Wonderful combination, and a classic. My dad had a Remington model 141 in 35 Remington, until he got his Remington model 760 in 30-06. I did get a chance to shoot it, and always thought the 35Rem, was an under appreciated cartridge. Glad to see someone still thinks it's worth hanging onto to. I've sold most of my stuff, including all the family heirlooms. However, my next deer rifle, will probably be that combo. I've been thinking about it for quite a while.

I love my Marlin 35 Rem(1954, Model 336). This is the first year i Used a differant rifle and caliber(308) because i could NOT find 35 rem. Ammo(or they wanted $5.00 a round)!! I normally use Hornady, 200 grain Leverevolution rounds. I have NEVER in over 30 years of hunting with the 35 rem. had to EVER shoot a Deer more then Once! Never had one travel more then 30 yards! Many times I shoot them in or near the neck (usually from a Tree stand). They had a Tracking distance of about 3 feet(straight down)!

I have a 336 in 35 remington and love it. Sadly ammunition and reloading supplies for it have become almost impossible to find. I was able to buy 1 box of hornady 200 gr ftx bullets and the gun loves them. Have not found any more in stock though.

I bought a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington in the early to mid 80s and killed the only trophy buck ever shot on the farm where I had grown up over 20 years earlier. That gun got stolen in the late 80s and until about a year ago, I had written it off as gone forever. Then one day I saw a note posted on my back door that I hadn't seen before from 2 months earlier (since I don't use my back door much) that the local Sheriff's Department had my GUN!! I went to pick it up and some idiot had added a see-thru scope mount and put on a piece of junk 3-9 scope crooked in that mount! It also had a really nice gun case now so it came home with me that day. I put it in the vault and tried to find ammo...a useless endeavor. Fast forward a couple of months and a friend posted in our gun club newsletter that he had 150 pieces of brass, powder, 100 primers and a box of 100/200gr bullets for that caliber for sale along with the dies for reloading it at a more than reasonable price. I called him immediately and paid him $100.00 more than he was asking since he didn't know what he had and I did! Now to remove that junk off the top of the action and get down to loading some ammo after over 30 years without doing that caliber. It will be fun to relearn that caliber and play with different loads again as I did back when. I even tried some 125gr .357 pistol bullets in it back in the day just for plinking loads and they worked great for short range target shooting.

My .35 is a Marlin from 1953. It was my Dad's and I have loved that gun since as long as I can remember! When he got me my 30-30 Marlin (1977), I was BEGGING for a .35 Rem LOL I shoot the Hornady Lever Ammo in the .35 and when I do my part, it's sub MOA too. I have shot deer with it from 5 yards to 150 and it always delivers. Great video!
@garyK.45ACP2 жыл бұрын
Well, why not? It's a great cartridge within it's range limitations...which is enough for almost all deer hunting situations. My personal favorite deer rifle is a .300 Savage, for the same reasons. But it is hard to say there is really anything better for deer/black bear/hogs within 150 yards than a .35 Remington. I like a good sectional density and would probably lean toward 200-225 gr. bullets, but would defer to someone with more hunting experience with that cartridge. What weight bullets have given you the best results? BTW, that Marlin has my favorite configuration for a lever gun...Flat "Shotgun" butt, pistol grip, half magazine, no barrel bands and 22-24" barrel. Winchester made the same set up in the Models 64 and 71. Thanks, George. Looks like you're ready.

Hi George, bringing back memories for me. That was my first deer rifle dad gave me to hunt with him. Mine had the full magazine tube. That 35 took a lot of deer two black bears and many hogs. Would be great to have that rifle back. It was with iron sights never had a rifle with a scope. I've shot my son in laws 270 with a scope it's nice with these tired old eyes to see far away. LoL that pumpkin sure did disappear in a hurry!! 🤠

Took a few deer with my old .35. The last buck I shot was at around 60 yards and the Hornady Lever Evolution penetrated both shoulders crushing the scapula on both shoulders. Deer dropped almost instantly. My favorite deer rifle. I also have an old Redfield 4x wide field of view scope that works perfectly in heavy cover on that rifle.

I used to have 45-70 and I sold it, it was very good, but perhaps too much of recoil for me. If it was 35 Remington,I would have had it probably till today. Great video, great rifle, very good shooting and perfect shooting range. Regards from Czech Republic.

Years back Meijers had the Marlins, on sale, for 80 some bucks. 30-30 or .35. I got 4 .35s. Gave the Old man one and my buddies got the other 3. A couple of years later, my sister bought her husband one. She paid 3 times as much. So we had 5 .35s in our group. All shot 180 grain Speer flat points. I like to see you test some of those. Those were, by far, the best bullets we found.

I reload the Speer 180's. I get great accuracy and very good muzzle energy with almost 2400 fps. Check out Hodgdon reloading data using the Leverevolution powder. I would love to have a Remington model 760 or 7600 in .35 Rem. Remington did make a few of them in the 80's.
@briansearles4473 Жыл бұрын
@@Mark-uq9km The only bullets I've reloaded my 35 Rem with have been both the 180 and 220 grain Speer flat points. I have read claims that the 180 has the same penetration as the 220? From my own experience I find the 180 grain is the best all around bullet for the 35.

I’ve wanted a Marlin lever action in .35 Remington for a long, long time. Never got around to getting one, then the ammunition pandemic hit and trying to find many rifle calibers was next to impossible. I settled on a Henry .44 Magnum because it is a caliber I already reload, so I have plenty of ammunition on hand.
