The Hawley Smoot Tarrifs act was enacted in a period where the US was an export economy. Every other country was literally destroyed. The roles have reversed. Now, America is the destroyed economy, with no production capability. Tariffs would force businesses to either invest in America's domestic infrastructure and production capacity, or lock themselves out of the largest consumer economy on the planet. It's that easy. This strategy won't work in 20 years when China is projected to surpass the US as the largest consumer economy. It's either do tariffs now, and build a manufacturing base in America, or America is a dead country - it'll be run by Mexican businessmen that actually make things rather than American businessmen who are currently just running a financial shell-game. That is the long and short of it. Economics and demographics take generations to manifest. Elections happen every 2-4 years in the US. Just think about what that means for broad-ranging economic decisions in this computerized age. 20 years ago, no one would've had a job getting on youtube making videos. 10 years ago, you could guarantee the person making the youtube videos was American. Now, there are about 4 billion people that have the capability. Elections can't keep pace with these new developments, and there are no current economic plans that even ask relevant questions about the developments.
