It is not just Company vs. Country. It is about product category (or type). There is also a difference between tariffs and price fixing. For the latter example, we did not place a tariff on sugar that would have impacted Australia, we set the minimum price that companies inside the US could purchase outside sugar to the price that internal sugar manufacturers could make it. For the category example, China has an extreme tariff on US made cars. It has basically banned US made car brands. They will buy German made cars, but not US. Trump should either set the tariff on all Chinese made cars so high that it would be more than a Tesla or just ban them outright. That is finished product. It can move down to things like solar panel components, batteries, and electric motors, etc. that are used in a finished product that is assembled here. China will be smart about this and work with Mexico or Canada to try and circumvent this high tariff.

Luckily for most people, China isn't so cheap anymore anyways. China is getting expensive and the cheap production lines are relocated to other Asian countries, so putting tariffs on China MIGHT not have such a huge impact after all and MIGHT keep the production of high value products in the USA. However, if you are also putting tariffs on Malaysia, Vietnam, Indonesia, etc., than good luck...

It disincentivizes taking jobs and shipping them overseas. It’s not about forcing prices down. That will happen with the free market but it needs to start with protecting Americans. The job of the president is to make life better for American citizens
@datrout744
@datrout744 3 ай бұрын
@@FrankLee-d6y American jobs arent going anywhere, if the goal is to create more factories then tarrifs are the worst thing you can do. There isnt really a company out there that doesnt rely on either imports or exports on some level. Remember the tarrifs trump put on china? That killed our soybean exports, farmers were furious with trump and he wants to do it again. If you want to incentivise American businesses and to get jobs in America then the best plan is to make business cheaper and more available, tarrifs do the exact opposite.
@MarkValascun
@MarkValascun 3 ай бұрын
Decreasing the price is NOT the point. It’s supposed to increase the price of selling parts from specific countries who are undercutting via low price labour and poor quality. So the idea here is that American made was getting beat by Chinese made because of the price. So increasing the tariff on them gets more manufacturing back into America and makes money for the American economy if Chinese gear is sold aswell.
@robertcalef4242

@@FrankLee-d6y Tariffs and free markets. You have to pick one. Tariffs also prompt retaliatory responses from the home country of the manufacturer in question. They also create inflation as the cost of goods goes up, and then you'll unemployment go up. Think this through.

Vivek forgot 1 additional thing... Trump recently told an American car manufacturer... "If you move your American plant to Mexico... I will place a 35% tarrif on your vehicles that you try to sell (from Mexico) to US consumers. THAT is also very appropriate & since it was done BEFORE executives did anything, it was very effective, saved many jobs & greatly minimized any potential financial damage. Smart move. BTW - Other countries do this!

Tariff = laziness and usually from the incumbent country….. levelling the playing field is what is needed not slapping a random tariff and expecting a better outcome to end consumer.

The approach analytically for the rich to get richer. All these are scenarios that will impact tremendous economic growth whether right or wrong. WHO WILL SUFFER THE MOST ARE THE MEDIOCRE OR THE POOR BECOMES POORER. TARIFF IS PART OF A REVENUE GENERATING INCOME OF US TO BOASTS ECONOMY TO HELP INDUSTRIES AND WORKERS AT THE SAME TIME CREATES UNEMPLOYMENT… WHICH IS NOT SOMETHING FOR COMPANY PLAY FIELDS LIKE PLAYING A ROULETTE. THE COMPLICATION OF TARIFF COMPLETELY AFFECTS MANY LIVES… SO IT IS NOT A MONOPOLY GAME FOR A COMPANY PLAY FIELD… WE ARE TALKING ABOUT TAXES IMPOSE FOR THE GOOD OF THE COUNTRY NOT FOR THE PROFIT OF RICH PEOPLE COMPANIES… IT IS NOT ABOUT BEING A BRILLIANT IDEA OR ANALYSTS BUT HOW IMPOSE TAXES BENIFITED THE HUMANITY’S WELFARE. IT IS EASIER FOR THE RICH… WHAT ABOUT TO DOMESTIC BUSINESSES AND WORKERS…

I'm from India and I agree. Our government puts 100 %tarrifs on American made products and I think American companies need a even play field and they should also charge 100 % tarrif on Indian made goods. Everyone deserves even ground so innovations at low cost can be achieved

Yes, this. Applying obstacles to free trade by other means just to not call those actions a "tariff" is a sneaky way many countries have done it. Democrats are particularly good at this kind of back-door taxing and regulating.

Vivek is correct, but STATE SUBSIDIES are perversions of the market which obfuscate the "level playing field" that's desired. We would be correct in criticizing China, for example, for doing this, but it's something we do extensively as well.

No. Trump threatened Chinese car manufacturer with tariffs as they were planning on building a massive manufacturing plant in Mexico that would have bankrupt US car manufacturers. If they add the cost of the tariff to the car that would make them more expensive then American made cars. Then no one would buy Chinese made, they would just buy American made. China does not want to miss out on the biggest market in the world. So their only option is to avoid the tariff and start manufacturing in the US making US jobs and more taxes for the government. China stopped all plans to build in Mexico. Japan owned Toyota have 11 manufacturing plants in the US soon to be twelve. It’s not impossible to build in the US and still turn a profit.

He didn’t answer the question. A tariff imposed upon a specific company or sector is either because of dumping or subsidy practices. A tariff imposed upon a country is a totally different matter.
@mfox6450
@mfox6450 Ай бұрын
Ultimately the tariff that is imposed becomes government revenue. Very rarely does it go directly into the industry that is causing the consumer demand in a foreign country, that placed the tariff in the first place. In some instances, there are grants and subsidies that are created for specific product lines, these would be seen as solar panels for rooftops, pink bats for ceiling insulation, healthcare products, and services, water buyback schemes, and like most governments, wherever a within arms length relationship is really exploitative unconscionable contract terms and the long-term secured with your mates embezzlement of the public’s money. Because after all the consumer had to put time in, at a value per hour, to be able to pay for the luxury of driving production, justifying innovation, and with demand like we see with Smartphones and consumer goods, food products, - where we expect economies of scale to put downward pressure on retail pricing. Just like the reserve banks elevated interest rates, plus default rate interest on the likely 65% of mortgages they hold, while they branches put tariffs on transactions as transaction fees, and then on top of the credit card and home loan, which is all subject to bad public policy and practice, putting direct tariffs on people and on their own property interests, charge an interest rate, and then charging default rate interest, because of public policies inflationary practices. We’re getting ripped off left right and centre because of tariffs privately in publicly. Price inflation because of public policy is an unnecessary expense. Just get rid of the swamp, and we won’t have to inflate consumer pricing to sustain the wasted payroll and direct expenses of the government, and cutting off the corruption and leakage which is in the trillions . It’ll be great for the agriculture, energy, transportation, fabrication, packaging, housing, industries in the immediate term. These bureaucrats being the smart asses as they are, will be better suited in these other industries. Where the consumer basket varies greatly in Cost from country to country,. Where Colgate toothpaste, and a toothbrush, can see a price drop ~50% or more in poor countries. Ultimately public policy and crime and corruption by the government is literally what’s driving the cost of absolutely everything to continue to rise, only to sustain their reckless and indifferent criminal behaviour Coupled with their misinformation and disinformation, and propaganda in furtherance of crimes. Now is the time for “Parity”. This and all “their” liabilities come with the great reset. However, we the people are necessary to keep share prices alive. In a great reset, we the people most certainly don’t want to lose our moral rights , inherent value or our equity. Of which greed and corruption, which is what also drives tariffs, and to deliver those brown paper bag payments, to burden the population, the people of the world with the liabilities those involved in financial fraud, and exploitation, Price gouging, specifying product, or services, or standards, monopolistic type, market restrictive behaviour, insider Trading and anti-trust violations. All of this is public policy, yet not many of us voted for it or agreed to it. There is no long term play when there’s no productivity, and consolidated Wealth, ultimately is just going to be new financial schemes and scams, where the government doesn’t even collect tax revenue, but they do go seize the odd unscrupulous account here and there, sadly with so many hundreds of thousands of transactions that are nefarious government behaviours with public funds. Not one of them getting caught. Going for the petty crime, when the real crimes are prophetic and monumental. This will stifle innovation, inhibit the prospect of economic prosperity. Ultimately, as you see, tariffs are used as a wedge in ”free trade and commerce” stifles competition, drives up unemployment, poverty, homelessness, starvation, crime and social deterioration, deleting life prospects of billions of people. Most certainly government needs to have an income to be able to provide the services required by the population, but while the population is paying for bombs to kill other people, or even unnecessary expenses like exploitive accommodation fees for non-contributing humans, who are a burden on the state, introducing tariffs for political reasons, will only produce an enemy - especially if one is a stubborn counterparty. Yet, the people continue to pay. The Great Audit… Global Digital Bank Association - We are the only trustee of you and your interests. A World Kindness Project.

Maybe instead of tariffs we solve for the triffin dilemma by adopting a neutral reserve currency (Bitcoin) so that American manufacturing can compete? I know there’s a lot of second and third order consequences to a situation like that, but, I think we should consider those consequences in advance, since it might happen whether we want it to or not

This is the man I voted to make America great again. To bring jobs back to America. I know we have labor shortages. Bring cheap labor from third world countries legally on temporary visas pay them $700/$1000/month. Stop sending IT jobs to India. Train American people. Let the imported workers do all the hard odd jobs and American people do all the good jobs. This is how Arab countries run. Why cannot we do that same? Stop give bureaucracy.
