right, the 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico will end up increasing prices more like 30% because you know if you have to change the price you may as well take the opportunity to bump it a little further since you are already taking the pain anyway... By implementing or threatening tariffs, the goal is to create a sense of urgency for other countries to come to the negotiating table. Once the desired agreements are reached, the tariffs can be reduced or removed, making them a temporary measure designed to shift the balance of trade in favor of the United States. This approach aims to secure long-term economic advantages without committing to long-term protectionist policies.

Also the obsession with being a manufacturing based economy with the assumption it's always better is baffling.
@deanoliumСағат бұрын
@@DimaRakesahespecially as cost of living and labour laws means things produced in the US will always be more expensive than places like China and the third world. All tariffs can do is make those external options expensive enough to the American consumer to match US manufactured stuff. But the difference in cost is so vast it will just massively reduce demand anyway. Meanwhile there’s other markets for these countries, so whilst yes there will be harmed, it won’t be anywhere near as much as the US will be harmed. The sad thing is how they never understand or think this through. Thinking external governments pay for access on a tariff basis is just insane and detached from reality. Or that making American manufacturing competitive will mean everyone will keep their quality of life. We’re all used to having incredibly complex things for incredibly low prices, and I don’t think people realise that’s only down to being able to get things for cheap through third world labour.

Crazy how we learn this in 4th grade in the Caribbeans, mainly because how much U.S tariffs and economic policy has screwed our island over the decades. The absurdity does not even end there, the idea is that we are going to manufacture here only and that any food product from overseas will instead be grown here as well. Not only do we have hundreds of factories that we depend on overseas, if we decided to just build the same amount here that would take years and trillions of dollars that we do not have. By then prices will be taller than a skyscraper, and people will be very hungry and angry.

And ultimately, that's what made this person even consider the idea that their beliefs may be wrong. I feel, we as one humankind on earth, need more of such conversations; loving, open, honest, without aggression, simply debating over what we believe is true. This may not have been an exchange where they saw eye to eye, and of course patience in itself is already implying that one person has a higher standard of knowledge than the other. That kid made a point that Trump till this day doesn’t understand. Buying cheap low quality stuff made by workers working for nothing isn’t bad. Same applies to things that are important for the country like energy from Canada or technology, or rare early materials from Greenland. It’s a privilege to have access to these and buy them at low cost. And you know what we have smart people doing research in economics and trade since many years. What do they say?
@visivox2 сағат бұрын
"The consumer bears the cost." Absolutely! Three outcomes of the import under tariff: (1) the importer absorbs the increased cost of the tariff, (2) the importer absorbs part of the increased cost and passes the remainder to the American consumer and (3) the total cost increase cost is passed through to the America consumer. Which is scenario is most likely to occur (1), (2), or (3)? A possible knock on effect of tariffs. The price of an identical product made in the USA will rise to meet the new cost of the imported product subject to the tariff.
@rogerstarkey539025 минут бұрын
My Hypothesis. Donny thinks that China is SO eager to be in the US market that they will send product anyway. THEN He thinks the US consumer will pay the price. THEN his idea is to take the money he "Skimmed" and use it to........ ? MAYBE Bail out the failing US industry? Build factories to compete with China? ....... That MIGHT work until... 1) The US public figure out THEY are being screwed [although on the evidence here.... they might not?] or 2) The Chinese think "Hold on!! OUR reputation is being tarnished! AND he's using OUR product to build competition!!" Then THEY might decide to use "inside sources" to blow the whistle... OR They might just say "We have PLENTY of market Globally, DO NOT send the product to USA" THEY will make exactly the same profit selling their "Overproduction" to The Global South" (AKA "the Global MAJORITY")
