Here's what I think - if she did opera only, she would be certainly very good at it. Now that she splits up in between two different musical regions, no one should expect a professional operatic performance. Things don't work this way. But she really is nearly there. It's just tiny details that she would have to improve. But sincerely, this is just stupid even pointing out. She is indeed VERY good, at least among those, who make excourses to opera while singing something else.

@Supernature06 Opera singers don't need microphones in opera houses, meaning they don't use it when they perform in propper sized places which are also designed to have excellent acoustic resonance. Even the most experienced opera singer wouldn't be able to sing in a venue like this without using a microphone. Also Tarja is specialized in chamber music, not opera.

I saw a video in KZbin were she was being interviewed and someone asked her about Opera. She said she has been asked by the Finnish National Opera before to perform with them. And she did acknowledge that if she were to do Opera, she would have to work on her technique. But for now she wants to do what she's doing with her solo career. :-) Personally I love it when she sings operatically.
@PoetessOfTragedies15 жыл бұрын
Tarja is a soprano now, a dramatic soprano (the deeper kind) with a range of 3 octaves, but she WAS a mezzo until Century Child. She said herself she can reach very low notes because she used to sing Mezzo's notes in the past.

Thanks for answer, I personally think that a huge vocal range doesn't mean a great opera singer or a great singer in general, but of course it helps a lot. I personally add the technical use of the voice, the natural timbre, the kind of roles the artist have done, the inovation her/his interpretations brought to music scene, and in case of opera is also important the stage presence, etc. And for me, when talking about sopranos, Joan Sutherland and Maria Callas were at their prime the Best ever!
@soundslikeblue15 жыл бұрын
Diana Damrau, is my favourit from the "today" sopranos, she is really amazing! A problem with Callas is the fact that most of her recordings are from her later career, and her voice in the 40's and first half of the 50's didn't have some "fragilities" she would have later (including the high pitches). Anyways, all of these names are from top sopranos who had great knowledge of how to work with their amazing instruments (her voices) Thanks for answer, I liked to share these ideas with you.

It was "evil empire of communist soviet Russia" (which was then 6 weeks old) that granted Finland independence. It was for the very reason of the fall of the tsarist power that Finnish independence was possible, notwithstanding the efforts of Finns to achieve independent statehood (mind that we are talking about 1917 not 1940). Tarja has a great voice, she is stunningly beautiful, has a great temper one feels when she's singing, but she is definitely not the best soprano on this planet mate.

If a microphone is used or not depends of the size of the venue. When a venue is as big as this none opera singer is capable to assert his/her voice to cover the entire place, but if you have any doubts of her abilities because of this, you can search for Noche Escandinava II , you'll find videos of Tarja singing opera (with no microphone).

Dont get me wrong I'm a HUGE Nightwish & Tarja fan, but her voice has never really WOWED me so much, maybe once or twice, it IS impressive but I HAVE heard better. Also Tarja & Sarah Brightman (of whom I'm also a fan) Although both sopranos are two COMPLETLEY different Sopranos...Sarah has a much more bright & breathy voice but can tear Tarja down when it comes to her Lyric voice also.

Don't care about people say, there's only two kind of people in this video, who loves Tarja in all the different faces she has or those who came to criticize her work because the fell about their opera "stars" are not famous enough to make them feel proud, God, we know she's not an opera singer completely, but we Tarja fans know this: Any singer can be imitated but not Tarja, she can sings and sound like a soprano, but sopranos can not sing like all she can.

But on the other hand I can't find her singing any "tradicional", or eupropean repertoire (like bellini verdi, etc), so its dificult to compare her to my favourits (Sutherland, Callas, Damrau). But I will pay more atention to Sumac, I really got curious, thanks.

@sjmaco Yes, I am a male classical singer and have 3 octaves as well. It's how you use your range. She lost something with time. And I bet she can't handle REAL pieces without a microphone- which is true opera for me. She's good, but those who say she has the best voice in the world clearly know nothing about opera. This is my opinion, with respect.
@shawnjesseman6645 жыл бұрын
A couple things : Tarja is a classically-trained lyric soprano. She studied at Conservatory in both Finland and Germany. She was a classical singer before the whole Nightwish thing happened. When Nightwish happened she decided to not pursue a career in Opera. For one thing, there is a lot more money in rock than there is in opera and it appeals to a larger audience. When she first started in Nightwish it was a challenge for her because she had never sung that type of music before and her classical voice got in the way. As for microphones, it depends on the size and type of venue and what that particular venue is designed for. Pavarotti always had microphones in front of him when he performed. Unless he was performing at the Met which is an actual opera house and is designed for projection. If you watch her Ave Maria concert from 2015 she does not use a microphone. I'm a lyric tenor as well as a rock singer. I perform a lot with a symphony here in Florida and if we are doing an event, especially in an outdoor Amphitheater, yes we use microphones. Whether we are performing opera or musical theater.
@Aurinkohirvi5 жыл бұрын
Shawn, right, except she never pursued to become an opera singer, she specialized into chamber and church music. But of course she trained to sing operas too. Yep, just do an image search of Pavarotti, and plenty of microphones there. Using microphones depends on the case. Tarja started to specialize classical already before Sibelius Academy, while she was in Savonlinnan taidelukio, she took also private teaching to classical singing already back then, according an interview by her.

Hey she's better then Anette, no offense. She's also a lot better then Sharon (I do like her though) from Within Temptation. Finnish Swedish differs a lot from the mainstream rikssvenska or hogsvenska. Finnish guys would have to correct me here probably, but I think that using mainstream Swedish during official state ceremony would be at least frowned upon. In addition, they teach them only the Finnish Swedish dialect in schools in Finland. However, in my opinion, as one sings Vart Land it's 100% ok, but probably the matter should be reconsidered while singing Sibelius songs.

I have never specialised myself in Opera. I studied specifically chamber music singing. I have a lot of respect for real Opera singers." Her chamber music singing isn't as good as that of strictly classical musicians maybe because all this pop singing hurt her voice.
