I play this song on keyboards and it is unbelievably difficult. Keith Emerson plays it effortlessly. I struggle through the whole thing. Emerson was more of a contemporary classical avant-garde composer than Rock. I rate him as one of the great composers ever, which may sound silly, I was classically trained from page 5 on piano. He is just a genius of incomparable Talent. this Symphony rendition is a huge tribute to ELP and is dynamic and fantastic!

I am a drummer with little ability on the keys and was lucky enough to know a guy in my home town with a Hammond B 3 and a Minimoog who had the Tarkus sheets and could play it, at least some parts of it. I carried my vintage Ludwig kit to his rehearshing room, and we practiced it without a bass player. After finishing he showed me the parts he played, and I wrote down the keys for both hands because I cannot read music. Being at home I practiced it on my Yamaha DX 7. This was 25 years ago, and recently I found back my notes. It is very rewarding playing this great music, and I owe all this to my friend who unfortunately passed away several years ago. Every time I hear this piece I remember him, he was a great keyboarder. Luckily I have some tape recordings...

More proof that Keith Emerson was composing serious music in a rock context that will live forever. I would definitely see an orchestral concert of Emerson's work. No disrespect to Lake and Palmer.
@albertoolmos21
@albertoolmos21 8 жыл бұрын
With all due respect, that concert could be Nice, but probably a boring piano/synth concert, not an assembly, orchestral classic rock concert like this one. it is worth to mention that practically all melody and counter-melody lines are by Lake, and percussion by Palmer is awesome by itself while perfectly matched to Emerson/Lake compositions. Looking at the Pictures at an Exhibition's composers/arrangers will depict this.

Mr Roy. I'm the youngest of 5 brothers. But I can remember crawling around on the floor and being terrified if this album cover. Saying that ELP has been in my blood for close to 54 years. It is just as alive as it was then. I had a great friend play Trilogy on a full concert grand at my brother's passing early this year. It was very emotional but also very justified. After listening to recording from the funeral and talking with my friend. He told me he knew of the song and heard it many time but never sat down and try to play it. When I asked if he would he said he would be honored but really didn't know It, and kinda short notice. But I've known this guy since grade school and I knew he would do a very good job at it. And I'm here to say he nailed it Spot on. I couldn't of asked for a better friend to come through for me like that. And I'm sure my brother was honored by it.

This orchestral version was used in a historical drama of the Japanese Middle Ages("Taira no Kiyomori"). This may sound strange, but it was great! EL&P was very popular band in Japan, even my father had an LP of them. Many Japanese composers were influenced by them, such as Nobuo Matsuo, known for his music in Final Fantasy series. so, It makes sense some of the people says It's sounds like boss battle music.

This is so good, just shows how much ELP was virtuoso at their music. I love this version because it gives room to so many instruments of the orchestra. This reminds me of Holt's "Planet" in some way. But indeed a lot of solid rock music can and is played with a classical orchestra with much "grandeur" !!! Bravo !

It's a great shame he is not here to witness this. All three were talented beyond all normal standards and the composition skills and playing ability of Keith was just outstanding. His ability in bringing all the sounds created here by a full orchestra to live audiences by just the three individuals was magic. I know because I saw them...more than once. Phenominal on stage and just as intricate as the studio version only better because of the additional improvisation they treated a live audiences to. They can be copied and emulated today but I don't see the shear creative genious of ELP anywhere nowadays. A once in a lifetime gift that will last for generations.

Magníficos arreglos y orquestación. Me ha emocionado profundamente. No lo conocía, aunque soy fanático de ELP y he tenido la increíble suerte de poder verlos en vivo en 1997. Jamás he podido olvidar ese concierto.
