I’m so grateful that this video popped up on my feed. This is so important. I worked for a number of years as a mental health clinician before I lost my father, which is when I left the field because I needed to focus on my own mental health and heal myself from a lot around that. I wish the world would understand everything you are saying-especially about clinical terms being loosely thrown around. You spoke so beautifully and I appreciate you so much. So much love to you and a big warm hug. Stay well sister ❤.

I've been feeling a sense of 'overwhelming tarot consumerism' for quite a long time now but it has intensified this year. I have been buying decks for 18 years but especially over the past 4 years. This year was the end. I have bought three decks this year but no more. I read professionally with the RWS and for myself with three decks, of which one is the RWS. This despite the fact I have over 100 decks. The avalanche of deck releases and unboxing videos is just too much. Way too much. For a spiritual practice, tarot has become a humongous consumer driven monster. Nope. My professional reading gives me focus - that and my magick practice. And I just focus on that. No more decks, focus on particular practices.

Thank you for sharing your experiences and reflections on this topic! I too find myself reaching most frequently for my RWS. There's definitely something in this for me and something to really consider whenever there is that craving to buy another new deck. Perhaps having a strategy might help some, whereby before someone buys a deck, they look at how they would use the deck and why they really want it/ need it and really question that desire for the deck before they hit the buy button. I think those questions would probably need to be different for each person, but perhaps there is an idea for a blueprint approach to making those decisions with more discernment.

I'm watching your video and my brain is spinning with all the little comments I want to add and when its actually time to sit down my mind is blank :-) Anyway I very much resonate with you on all the topics you have mentioned. Responsibility, transparency and healthy balance - in everything. I see youtube channels like an online universe with infinite vortexes, people are attracted to different channels for different reasons. But there is always ALWAYS the option to go offline to real world. Grounding in nature is necessary. Thank you for sharing!

Wow I feel the exact same sometimes! There’s not enough time to practice all the things I want to practice or read and study all the topics I want to. When you’re trying to keep up with a KZbin schedule sometimes you feel your own practice suffers a bit. I resonated deeply with this 💕

Really insightful video Emily. So much YES to what you said about people armchair diagnosing others through the internet... it's so damaging for the person being labelled, and damaging to people who actually have those clinical diagnoses. Please stop, lol 😅 I enjoyed hearing your thoughts. Have a beautiful day 🥰

Thanks for your honesty. Everyone seems to assume that ‘hoarder’ means serious mental health problem/ clinical issue but I think the disorder was named after the everyday use - eg when I was young we used to describe a squirrel as hoarding nuts - rather than the other way round as far as etymology goes. ….I guess maybe the common usage has shifted but I think we need words for ‘gathering a large quantity’ without triggering all these mental illness references. I have experience of mental illness myself and believe most things are a spectrum from diagnosable illness to personal quirk to cultural norm, I feel for me it’s disappointing that when mental illness is mentioned some people seem to get very worried about categorisations to the point where things can’t be discussed freely. (For me this is worse for everyones mental health, especially when so many people don’t get diagnosed (correctly) for years). With collecting & reactions to collecting I also find there are cultural norms that are evident but rarely spoken about; about what volume of shopping is normal, desirable, ‘spiritual’, or would make you worry about someone. (meanwhile social media has been a catalyst for lots of consumerism for everyone)

I really appreciated hearing your thoughts on these topics. Nicely said! I think it’s important to evaluate our own practices to make sure they serve us well, so definitely a valid discussion. But it can be a little too easy to project our stuff on to others, so being wary and mindful of that is important. Thank you! 💖

Thank you Emily that was beautifully said and regarding deck buying and responsibilty of consummers and creators i agree with you fully. This is something i have been thinking a lot about and your points really resonate with me & you articulated yourself much better than i ever could so thank you ❤ also i am so there with you about needing to come back to nature i can't cope for too long if i don't take ti me for grounding or just going outsidefor some fresh air for a bit it is the best medicine 🌹

Hi there! I just discovered your channel and I enjoyed listening to your perspective in this video. I especially appreciate that you touched on the topic of clinical terms being used in a harmful or mindless way. I think education around this topic is so important. As someone with my own experience of intrusive thoughts and anxiety disorders, it really hurts to hear people throw around terms like OCD or hoarder so carelessly. I hope that people will be more mindful with their language and realize that clinical mental health issues are a very real struggle for some people. It is not okay to label someone with a diagnosis if you aren't specifically a health professional being sought out for your service.

I really enjoyed your video and how honest and sensitive you were in sharing, and I especially appreciated your thoughts around the use of clinical language and the need for us as viewers to be conscious of what we're watching and why. As someone who has just opened an indie tarot store I have had moments of guilt about being “an enabler” for deck collectors. However you have reminded me that shopping (whatever it is) is a personal responsibility and no one should sit in judgment of others’ decisions. I hope that I advertise responsibly and will never have 100s of decks in the inventory to avoid the kind of overwhelm you speak about. 💚

Oh Emily, this is such a satisfying video to watch. I could not agree with you more. You expressed yourself so well and I believe that this is the most well put together video on these subjects that I have seen on tarot tube. 👨‍🎓👍🤸‍♀️🖤Thumbs up girlfriend!!! you nailed it. And in no way did you look like a hoarder in that video. 💞

I hear you. It is the same for me as well. To have all these ideas and plans but then paralysis when it comes to bringing it to fruition. I think it is the KZbin component that adds a layer of stress to it. I have kept the tarot to myself - I sometimes want to share. But other times I want it to be mine. A thing I can allow space for it to grow - without having to have it all figured out. Without having to create a video about it. I do feel social media burnout in my channel. I understand what you are saying about consumption. As I do unboxings and now I am thinking about minimizing. Canceling some subscriptions to boxes. I think it happens in every domain. Clothing, jewelry. Etc. even snack boxes. I have a lot of decks. I have not shown. But I do go to youtube for flip throughs. I feel for you that you have to justify what you have and its origin - to commenters.

Thanks for taking part on the conversations in such a lovely way. This was a video where I should have been commenting all along while watching cause I had so many thoughts but by now my mind is blank. But what I did just after this was that I subscribed to you on Tiktok. That's a first for me 😅 My daughter made me put it in my phone and I have zero idea on what to do with all that confusing mess. But atleast I managed to follow you! So learning something new. Part of my babysteps approach to the lost seeker in me. Thanks Emily. I really enjoyed this.

I really like the way you expressed your thoughts here. :) Very honest, yet gentle. Thank you for sharing. I think so many of us can relate to occasionally feeling overwhelmed by all the decks trending and not being able to stop ourselves from that "buy now" button... ;) I'm happy I found tarot back in 2004 because I couldn't splurge the way many people can that start learning tarot right now. I think that for many it actually hinders a good learning curve when constantly having a new deck to look at. But I also think so many of us have those moments you speak of, that we feel we need a break both from tarot tube and from shopping. It's healthy to take those breaks...

I know that my buying habits concern me and no one else. I buy decks or whatever I buy because I can. What I do with my money is up to me. Boundaries people! Respect other people's boundaries. If I decide to have two homes, a boat and travel around the globe twice a year it is up to me. It is nobody's business!
