During WWII German U-boats used to get water, fruits, fish at Tarrafal Monte Trigo bay, at the time Portuguese Santo Antão island, and also refreshment in the sea swimming around the U-boat. Tarrafal was next to São Vicente island under English military control with the Portuguese. Many allied ships were torpedoed in the area of Cabo Verde islands waters and the survivors were welcomed at S. Vicente island.
