The fact Kerchak could've killed Tarzan but he won't, Because he's part of the family. And besides it would also breaks Kala's heart, just like they lost their baby. He was only targeting at Clayton that was about to kill the other gorilla.

That always bothered me though. The movie did a very good job of making sure to portray the animals and Tarzan as what you might actually expect of animals in the wild. How did Kerchak even know that what Clayton was pointing at his family was a weapon? He hadn't seen Clayton use his gun before. It's just a bit jarring especially when you had a scene like Jane cowering in fear of Kerchak but coincidentally made the proper move towards a sliverback Gorilla beating it's chest at you, get down on the ground and show your back. It's a form of submission to apes and is the likeliest action you can take to get them to spare you. Such a small detail and it was masterfully done.

Many were rooting for Tarzan against Kerchak in this scene, but in his defense he had told Tarzan to stay away from the humans, and protect his family. Even if Jane, and her father were innocent. It was Clayton who had a plan to kill the gorillas. At least Tarzan felt remorse for choking Kerchak, and fixed his mistake of leading Clayton to the gorillas. He's a true hero man that was lucky to be raised by apes.

I'm with Tarzan's adopted mum here :'( it is a terrible thing what Tarzan did he had one job protect the pride at all times and Clayton was evil he shouldn't of hurt his adopted father kerchak was doing what he thought was right you don't fuck with the alpha gorilla there is a law amongst the gorillas don't screw with the father of the pride he's there to defend the females and the kids
