Mostly due to New Super Mario Bros. U coming out the same year which is arguably the better game. Also this game baited us in the trailers with the "something happens when you get 1 million coins" point only for that "something" being a statue on the title screen. Imo the significance of this game will always be nothing more than being the first retail Nintendo game that you can purchase digitally on the 3DS and also the first Mario game with DLC

The flagpole animation ends faster if you avoid grabbing near the top of it.

2000 was probably just an arbitrary choice by the runner, like a random consistency that doesn't effect the run. Similar to goofing off in autoscrollers, your inputs don't matter as much until right near the end so often TAS runners will just input frame-perfect tricks for the hell of it.

Ah yes, the coin-driven, BAAA-intensified version of NSMBWii that came out the same day as the 3DS XL and the same year as NSMBU. Not surprising that this is the second 3DS game to be given the TAS treatment. (The first being Ocarina of Time 3D.) Also won't be surprising if NSMBU gets the TAS treatment soon after...

is there any particular reason you often landed on the middle of the flag pole rather than the bottom? I know that for NSMB DS, the higher you were on the flag pole, the longer it took for the level to finish since you had to slide down, and that seems to be the case here, so unless they finally made it so that at any height it takes the same amount of time in this game, seems like that would be easily preventable time loss.

In this game, are the unlocked level packs in coin rush the same between the 3 saves? or each save have their own? Is the tas allowed to start a new save in a non empty cartridge, in wich the level packs are already unlocked, so that the popup like the one at 16:57 doesn't appear, saving time?
