This game is so well programmed that a lot of the TAS just looks like normal play.
@mads_in_zero3 жыл бұрын
I think people looking at speedruns and going "there's no glitches, so it's Good Programming" is a bit of a misconception among speedrunners and fans of. Like, everyone knows Pokemon Red and Blue has a lot of exploits. But if you think about it, when's the last time you saw anyone manage to _crash_ those games? Glitch Pokemon are the result of the game reading garbage data, and it keeps truckin' along. In my mind, that's a form of good programming too. Also, if you need a TAS to crash/break a game, it can still be a well programmed game. If you need to do things that are impossible for humans to do to break a game, then the game's still doing its job. It's designed to be played by normal humans, after all.
@thunderaxe31 Жыл бұрын
@@mads_in_zero It's true that exploits can be occasionally found even in well-written games, but just because a game doesn't crash casually, it doesn't mean that it's well-written. Pokemon Red and Blue programming was in fact absolute garbage, to the point that they wouldn't be functioning at all if Satoru Iwata didn't personally join the team at some point, to reorganize and restructure the whole game code. Read this article for more details: collider.com/pokemon-games-satoru-iwata-influence/
@EddieSpaghetti694 ай бұрын
@@thunderaxe31 Agreed, the entirely of Pokemon Red and Blue is held together by what equates to tape and glue. It's something that is a bit out of general gameplay but once you get curious you assume it's like pulling a bandaid *but it ends up unravelling the mummy.* Whomever decided that the whole game should be "Flags, Flags, Flags!!" instead of properly setting background data they manually set it which is why we get MissingNo ultimately. If Iwata said "No, Thanks though." there would be no Pokemon. It'd still come out, probably as something else, but it wouldn't be Pokemon.

I must say, i am still impressed by how few glitches this game actually has, compared to, for example, LA on the Gameboy...

Pitwalking wherever abusable just to take shortcuts. In particular, in this game's Sword and Shield dungeon where pitwalking is required to skip a major section of the dungeon, including the hyper slingshot. Pegasus seed and roc's cape just aren't enough. Something only a TAS is capable of here, unlike in link's awakening.
@TompaA3 жыл бұрын
Actually, that skip can be done without pitwalking with a perfectly executed jump with a bomb boost. It is done in real time runs even.
@Pika2503 жыл бұрын

Nintendo should really make another one of these games for the Switch, the usage of overhead and side-scroller mechanics were pretty unique. Also I would have killed to have that sprint and vaulting ability in the other older games.

That's why it's called TAS; Tool Assisted Speedrun. I'm not firm with these mechanics, but as far as I remember, it digs into the game data, where you can also reduce the enemies' reaction a bit, depending on the frame rate.
@EddieSpaghetti694 ай бұрын
It's easy to explain, the floor has "Tiles" where link has to have his origin or center-of-his-pixels overlapping *one* of those tiles. If link is over more then one he's pulled to whichever has more pixels; which can be taken advantage of if you shift link between them as he then isn't on *just one* and then the "link is falling" animation never gets to play. It can be explained through troll logic; if you walk *between* the pixels that are "between" the holes Link won't fall in. Takes great practice to use though.
@okieyoshimd98173 жыл бұрын
So I have to ask. How does Link walk over pits like that? Is it possible only via Tool Assist?
@Joel97_3 жыл бұрын
While you are in between two tiles, the game tries to 'suck you in' depending on which one you are closer to, you go into one or the other, but with frame perfect inputs, you can just be between both tiles and keep moving. I believe this is not humanly possible in RTA.
