The lags only happen when there's too many sprites on the screen at the same time since these games were designed for arcade machines which rely on a very limited ROM space. Also! It's a 2.5D game so that's also a big reason for more ROM consumption. You can say such games were the Call of Duty and Battlefield franchise of their time. 😅
