I watched a movie just last night about how a TAS proved the Diablo speedrun on SDA was fake and today, this drops. Neat timing.

from what I understood, they found out the speedrun was fake BECAUSE of the making of this TAS! Somewhere in the process they noticed the weird map layouts from the speedrun and following that all the inconsistencies everywhere

Wow I read the write up on the run. That's just crazy the work and research that went into making that run. I've never seen a Diablo speed run before let alone a TAS of it but that was super cool to see and really impressive. All the glitches and exploits were cool to see as well. I knew about the duplication one and i'm pretty sure I actually remember the mana shield one happening by accident while I just playing the game normally when I was a kid but that Lazurus quest skip was super cool.

The Lazurus quest skip is pretty recent as well, we build a tool that can tell the location of the skip as part of preparing this run. Prior to that people only knew roughly where to look for the tile and it was rare that people would be able to trigger it. It's not enough to walk across it, you actually have to stop on the tile.

I never understood one thing about the Diablo lore: Why did the protagonist rip the big shiny soulstone out of Diablo's forehead, see their body revert to a human, then think "yes I want some of that" and unhesitatingly jam it into his own forehead?

The game developers had the same feeling. It was something the person animating the video did and since they didn't have time to make a new one they had to go with it.

If I recall correctly, the lore is that the protagonist was slowly going insane as they descended further and further, and by the time they got to the bottom floor, they were convinced that smashing it into their forehead would seal Diablo. I guess the justification was since Prince Leoric was too young and wasn't a warrior, he couldn't take the same pressure that a hero could?

@@milkytoast3140 The lore I recall was; canonically the warrior made it to the bottom and realized when he killed Diablo that he had possessed the body of young Prince Albrecht who foolishly thought he could contain Diablo within his body and mind. The warrior, being considerably more powerful, attempted the same and it worked.... for a time.

Man, in the original Diablo when we figured out the dupe trick we broke the game in half. Hundreds of items and money piles all over town. Couldn't walk anywhere without accidentally picking something up.

What emulator is used for win95 games TAS?

The workflow here was to use PCem to create a virtual WIndows 95 machine to run Diablo, but since PCem itself doesn't have rerecording tools yet, a Linux framework called libTAS was used to run PCem to provide that functionality.

I don't think so, as all loading times are included in the game time until the final boss is dead. Someone may make such a cut soon, why not, but I don't think there's one right now.

TAS is just an input file for an emulator to replay. It's not actually people playing the game in the traditional sense. (machine translation to Russian) TAS - это просто входной файл для эмулятора для воспроизведения. На самом деле это не люди, играющие в игру в традиционном смысле.

Me and staphen did the first movie together, he shopped then passed the save state to me, I played the portion from town to Lazurus and then sent it back and he did the boss fights. The whole point of TAS is that it can be played back in the game engine, you can then edit the input at any point to improve the run.

...I won't to comment this but level of embarrassment is UBER. Make a normal speedrun... I have no Idea about showing a WIN attempt, using all of possible tricks and modifications, just to not DESTROY the body of game look like. People are weak, the have to CHEAT to show the power, thats why some of stupid people, they inject themselves with artificial body parts. Make the AI video with 1 minute speedrun then ^^
