TASBot pla.. owns Mario Kart Wii, Explained expertly by Malleo and crew (SGDQ 2019 TAS block)

Malleo, Luke, tasPlasma, SwordOfSeals as Funky, and dwangoAC join our perfectionist mascot TASBot in "owning" Mario Kart Wii individual levels as shown at SGDQ 2019
Malleo, Luke, and tasPlasma along with 17 other authors in the Mario Kart Wii TASing community put together a showcase for SGDQ 2019 of some of the most interesting and entertaining individual level Tool-Assisted Speedruns with additional commentary provided by SwordOfSeals and TASBot's keeper, dwangoAC. This was made possible through recent accuracy improvements in the Dolphin Emulator. In the emulator, authors can create time trial ghosts. As of more recent Dolphin Emulator versions, authors can transfer these ghosts to real unmodified hardware and successfully play back the time trial.
This TAS showcase makes use of a few cosmetic modifications to improve viewing experience, namely a "Live Replay" code which makes the race appear as if it is being performed live. This allows the viewer to hear the course music as well as character audio, as opposed to the vanilla replay system which uses one background song with no in-game audio. In addition, a speedometer code and a few menuing codes were used. These menuing codes simply allowed us to navigate to the next track faster which improved the viewer experience and allowed for more tracks to be added.
The commentary present in this video is outstanding and is the end result of months of work refining and rehearsing. The result is remarkable when compared to the initial video at • Hey GDQ, TASBot plays ... where it was just me (dwangoAC) with little knowledge of what was happening in each level.

@@blazewolf9912 a clock that's represented by having lights either lit or not lit, but rather than displaying a standard number, it's base 2 where our standard numbers are base 10, base 2 is on or off, 0's are off, 1's are on, so rather than 10 (in base 10) meaning 9+1, 10 (in binary) is 1+1, in 8 digits, you can count from 0 to 255, and binary can be measured in anything because it's a matter of "something's there, or something's not there" you dont have to worry about how much is there, and you dont have to worry about WHAT is there, as long as something is occupying the space, you can consider it a 1, an on-state,

As explained, the you lose bit is a side effect of playing back the ghost file, a tie is considered a loss. The estimate wasn't set in stone, we discussed adding an entire track and ultimately added three.

That was the best we could do, it's definitely way way too many things changing to keep up at supported bitrates and even the original source wasn't great so this is a stacked effect. Oh well. :)

Oof, I kinda had a feeling that was the case... 480p source Wii output, upscaled for the stream, then whatever bitrate Twitch VODs are saved as, then more transcoding and compression... it's still kinda jarring to see the couch cam and GDQ UI crystal clear, and then the gameplay looks like someone recorded it with a literal potato 🤔

As described in the video by Malleo, a cheat code was applied in memory to add that functionality as a cosmetic change only. No alterations to the game engine were made and you can find an older video on my channel where we demonstrated playing back on a completely unmodified console and disc. Does that make sense?

Even if carts are "trash" or "garbage" as they stated in the video, why not push their limits anyway? TAS isn't only about speed, it's also maximizing efficiency of ineffective or limited control schemes. What better way to demonstrate TAS skills than to overcome the game's built-in limits? Yeah, all the best speed-runners use bikes cause they're more effective for pure speed and maneuverability but that just seems overly predictable. Anyone out there willing to try something different?
