TASBot plays SMB3 100% by Lord Tom and Tompa - every level played faster than humanly possible

TASBot takes on Lord Tom and Tompa's 100% run of Super Mario Bros. 3, an hour long feat that pushes TASBot to the limit of how long he can stay synced to finish the game! TASBot makes it through World 4 every time but he sometimes desyncs at the fortress. This take was a successful completion.
You can see this run at TASvideos.org/2...

So, in regards to the question around 17:00, I'm no engineer, so I don't know at all if it would be helpful, but I know that LoadingReadyRun created a device (literally called "the Device") that sat between a live human and a console for their Desert Bus For Hope fundraiser. They used it to add actual, if frustrating, gameplay to Desert Bus in the form of scrambling inputs. They stopped using it because it ended up being one technical headache too many for their fundraiser, but it seems like it might be useful for such a project as a starting point, given that it interface with both a live human's inputs and a console.

After watching this and hearing that folks would like a way to record real input from the NES controller of some sort, that shouldn't be hard. The NES controller is just a simple 4021 8-bit shift registers. A PICT micro controller could probably intercept-and-relay or just sit inline in a bus-like fashion and watch the signals.

yep.. back when I played this game religiously I could beat many of these levels almost as fast (never did know about all the glitches to save time) but could hop through many levels like these did.. just have to memorize where the enemies are and vary your jumps a little. Some of these tricks are insane though like the shell spamming in the autoscroll worlds to fly forever and farm 1ups.. but yeah.. these levels were literally like 20 jumps long each haha

Ok so here’s what it looks like to me on the moving screen levels. Tasbot knows it’s a moving screen but it doesn’t know it’s a moving screen. Tasbot is surrounded by 4 slow moving walls but it is desperately still trying anything to find a way to get out and shorten the run time for that level and going insane. Basically all that show boating by Tasbot is the human equivalent of being in solitary confinement and smearing poop on the walls.... I feel bad for Tasbot.

I thought the movement of the Hamer Bros and if you get a hand or not were random events. How does the TAS account for those?
@TompaA
@TompaA 5 жыл бұрын
There's nothing truly random in games. Exactly how the randomness work in games differ however, but they usually depending on your input presses and global timers. For SMB3, the Random Number Generator starts ticking when you power on the game and will change for each non-lag frame throughout the game and there is no way we can change its outcome. As it runs on a timer, the only way we can manipulate things in our favor is to either save or lose time. After each level, we first check to beat the level as fast as possible, if we get a bad Hammer Bro. pattern, we have to delay a frame to see if we get better RNG, or another frame and so on. An example where this is very noticeable is at 6:34 were we turn around in order to delay several frames. We also usually check how much faster we need to beat a level for an earlier good RNG outcome. If we only need to save a single frame, or lose 20, we struggle harder with the level to come up with alternative strategies to see if we can manage to save another frame. But normally, the only way to manipulate things is to lose frames. I hope that explains it, or I can fill in with more details if wanted =).
@AndrewBater
@AndrewBater 5 жыл бұрын
@@TompaA thanks for the detailed reply, that makes perfect sense now that you describe it. Anything I've worked on uses DateTime for rng, but back in NES days they wouldn't have had that possibility.

1: Who cares if you're professional? It was an entertaining watch regardless. 2: Are all the clipping/glitches something a person could pull off without TAS? I've seen people do a few people, but nothing like this, particularly around 20:20 when mario walks right into a fire on the airship? 3: What exactly is going on here? Is this an AI playing SMB3 or is this a pre-programmed set of inputs you gave your bot and it's just going through them?

2. There are several clips that are in real time runs. The one you mentioned is a pretty hard clip, but runners try to do it at 51:17. Most clips like that, where we clip through downright, are a lot harder than the ones at for example 52:10, which are quite commonly done. 3. This is done by me and Lord Tom by us recording the input presses frame by frame. All these inputs are saved in a seperate file which we can send to eachother, which is how we can cooperate on the same project.

Hello from New Jersey! This is probably one of the best SMB3 tases I've seen, but nothing can beat the one from AGDQ 2016. I'm currently in the STEM course at my high school, and I'm currently a sophomore. I am interested in making TASes, but my laptop's hard drive broke a couple weeks ago, however, I am able to run a copy of unactivated Windows 10 and some linux distros in a VM using a Parallels Desktop trial on my Late 2009 iMac. I also have wine installed, but I always have trouble running the recording emulators under newer versions of wine.

For making TAS's, check out the resources available at TASVideos.org - I TAS in Linux most of the time.

Ok, I'm NOT hip to Twitch at all (I have never watched a single stream), so can someone please explain to me what the whole "redraw" box is for? WHAT is being drawn? By humans? I don't understand! (and please respond directly to me and tag my name if you can so google will give me a notification of a response.) THANK YOU!!

How did I get into TASing? I want to answer that, but first I need to talk about pinball universes.
